Can’t get it to connect

The worst part is we bought it as a Christmas gift and tossed the box away so not sure if I can even exchange it. The problem is we can hear other players when he plays, but they cant hear him. Watched several videos and still cant get it to work properly. Not sure if it was a refurbished item but its very frustrating.
