It can be a few feet away and still pick up your voice just fine, but it will also pick up background noise decently like your keyboard or a TV behind you. I bought a different stand with a shock mount for mine as the stand it comes with transfers taps on the desk (including typing on your keyboard ) to the mic as pops and booms. You could also put the mic on a separate desk or stand to mitigate this issue.
