It pulls off when the TV is turned to service it and was apparently the only unit available off the truck. I was not told that I needed a longer cord and that I could purchase it at the store or on line

I understand how this can be frustrating. However, it is important to consider that such sound displays rely entirely on the settings and functions of the source and output devices. Most of TVs can only handle one audio output at a time.
