I was unable to determine if there really was a virus (or malware) or if it was okay. Not wanting to deal with that problem, I did the data transfer to my new PC another way. I didn't return the cable because I didn't want to get into a huge discussion over whether the cable was infected with a virus when I bought it, or my PC infected the cable, or maybe it wasn't infected at all.

Unfortunately the speeds are much lower than advertised. I was getting about 80 MB/s max, which is much slower then the 625 MB/s (5Gbps) advertised speed. Task manager shows the USB device pegged at 100%, indicating that it is fully saturated and is the bottleneck. I can transfer files to an external HDD at speeds of 150 MB/s. I have to do it twice, so the total time is about the same as using this USB cable, but what's the point of the cable if it is about the same speed? It does work however. You can drag and drop files between the two machines, but there is significant mouse lag on the recipient machine, so don't plan on using this to bridge your mouse between two machines unless you can tolerance a very laggy mouse.
