It didn't matter what mode you were in. It is also hard to see the pictures on the controls. They are just indents and of course the same color. This box can "boom loud" when you need it and has a very mellow sound when you need that. It is lightweight and very easy to carry. It's a little too easy to push down the cd door opener and this stop the playing, though the cd may continue to spin. Reaching for the buttons and bracing your hand on the top is natural, but has that bad effect of opening the cd door.
