Connected hdmi to arc/hdmi on the tv but still no surround sound speakers. Receiver works fine in stereo mode. Any suggestions?

It's acceptable if the scenes are brightly lit, but when scenes are dark, it's a sea of black. It's impossible to make out most of the picture, if any at all.
