    Better than Google Home!

Why this is better than Google Home: 1. It has a battery backup in case of power outage 2. That battery backup also means that it is portable 3. Because it is portable, there is an easy to grip handle on the back 4. It sounds better than Google Home 5. It has bluetooth, Google Home does not 6. It has an LED display that shows you the time, outside temperature, and volume level 7. It is cheaper than Google home, and far superior, which is why I bought two of them!

Great Speaker and Great Price ($25)

This speaker blows away any other speaker I have (echo, tap) and I imagine at least the Google mini. For half the price of a mini and being portable, it is hard to beat. The Google Assistant is far better than Alexa (although it needs a name). It does more then Alexa especially when it comes to routines. It understands me much better and is more responsive. Couldn't be happier with this purchase.

I removed this product from the packaging and immediately noticed that BB has upped the quality of both the unboxing experience for something with an Insignia brand on it, and the quality of the product itself. Setup: This device gets treated like a regular google home, with the app handling all the setup. You get it connected to your wifi network and it's off and running. I have an existing google home, with some other devices connected, so it was easy to add this one and name it with the room it's in. Build: If you set this next to the Google-branded home you'll immediately notice that it's almost exactly the same proportions, only squarcled instead of round. It goes give it slightly less of a "burial urn" vibe, thank goodness. It's surprisingly heavy and I assume this is from the magnets on the speakers. The speaker cover is a sturdy gray fabric and the plastic surfaces are solid and feel well made. The power plug is recessed into the bottom and there is an extra USB port that I need to research. The display immediately turns on and gets internet time, using my address without any setup. The second part of the display doesn't come into play until later when you ask it other things. I wish the LED segments looked a little more modern and less like an old clock. Operation: As a google home device, this thing is powered by the google assistant and for all intents and purposes appeared to work the same. I did notice that it wouldn't make calls like my other google home can, but the sound that came from it when playing music was comparable and edged the google home slightly in quality. When you ask the device certain questions such as what's the weather like, it will light up the second display and show the temp. I haven't looked into it yet but I suspect you have some kind of control over what that second display shows, but it's not immediately accessible. When giving it commands I only noticed a slight delay in controlling some of my lights, otherwise all interactions were as quick as the standard Google home. Overall: I enjoy having the google home, and I find this to be a feature added inexpensive alternative. Somethings like the rotary volume that is sort of kitschy on the Google home have been taken away and replaced with linear volume controls.but overall the operation is so similar that there's no reason to buy a higher priced alternative. Combined with excellent sound from the speakers and you've got a winner!

This is a perfect speaker for bedrooms and taking around the house. This larger model is definitely worth spending a bit more on for 2 reasons: 1) the battery and 2) the sound improvements that come with the subwoofer. It doesn't sound as spectacular as a $500 Bose system, but for the size and price point, I love it. I also love being able to take it to the garage or out on the patio without interrupting the music. The smart features are the big sell for this speaker though. Google Home works just as well on this as the Google-branded mini, if not better. The microphone must be more sensitive, because it frequently responds to me instead of the mini when I'm in the room with the mini. We basically have to shut our bedroom door or speak close and soft to the mini to keep the Insignia from hearing us. The other major sell for me was the grouping capabilities of Chromecasts. Now I can set up a group to play music to my entire house without an expensive multi-room receiver. Since I've gotten Chromecasts, I haven't bothered with Bluetooth; the quality is much better and the range is too. The only thing I'd change about this speaker is the display color. Even at the lowest brightness setting, the white is a bit brighter than I'd like to have in the bedroom. Red or orange would be much better choice. I'd absolutely buy more for our other bedrooms.

I'm loving all the options in this space. Amazon Echo/Alexa is so limited to just the Amazon platform, but with these Google Assistant speakers you can get all kinds of devices from Android TV to Headphones and Speakers. This speaker is pretty decent. It's got a nice compact shape and size. The display is easily read and you can adjust the brightness on it which is good if you're putting it in a bedroom. The sound quality is a little muddy, but overall it produces a nice volume. You can't expect miracles out of a single tiny speaker. I'd say that the volume on this is superior to that of the Google Home mini and on par with that of the Google Home. As well, it has a bluetooth receiver in it for pairing up devices to it for music, etc. The speaker also has a built-in usb port with 1amp output for charging phones and the like. This is quite convenient for the bedside table. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're in the market for a new alarm clock/smart speaker.

Great speaker and on par with Google Home speaker

I purchased this speaker as a Xmas gift for my wife and she loves it. My intention was to buy a Google Home but when I saw this, I decided to try it out and I'm glad that I did! Pros 1.Portability - I can take the speaker to different areas of the house and run it off the battery. 2. LED display - It displays the time. It also displays the temperature when you ask (but only for a few seconds). Somewhat deceiving from the picture on the box but the fact that it even has a display is an improvement over the Google Home. 3. Better sound that the Google Home. Definitely handles the lower end of the sound better that the Google Home. 4. You can wave your hand over the top of the device to lower the volume by 20%. Cons 1. Could be a bit more stylish. It's not bad looking and to be honest, I prefer the black exterior finish over the white Google Home. I just wish they offered a few different options. This speaker would look good in a office or nice desk. I think a wood version or brushed aluminum finish would be nice and I would be will to pay for it. Overall, it's a very good alternative to a Google Home (or for a bluetooth speaker, in general).

Well made, nice looking, excellent performer - and it's stereo. Once the speakers get broken in, the sound is terrific. At first there was too much presence that was distracting. Now, after a few hours of playing, the sound is right on - good bass, mids, and highs. A few tips: you can say, display the temperature and it stays on the screen a little while. You can say, set the volume to x% and will be set and appear on the screen as well. Push the three buttons on top simultaneously and get the battery level. Of course there's much more google assistant can do too. Would easily recommend this device.

1- Setup was a breeze as easy as any other Google home I have. 2- Sound is very good for the price, distorted above 75 percent though. 3- Price is amazing, got it for $25 no one can beat this. 4- Functionality is as any other google assistant device including phone calls, yes i tried it twice and it works. 5- Design and size are very good. 6- I wish the time display was a bit larger, as I fave low vision. You can control brightness. 7- As many other mentioned, I wished the temperature could stay on. 8- Portability is a great plus, although I find disconnecting it from it cord is a bit annoying. 9- I have no idea what is the plan behind selling it for such a price. Good for me I guess!!

Great, but with an Achilles heel

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I'll start with the negative: The audio cut-off filter is far too aggressive and drops quiet sounds frequently like soft dialogue and classical music. It's incredibly difficult to use in an apartment where you can't always have the volume > 30-50%. I bought two of these but can't recommend them to others until there's a firmware update that fixes that issue. Best Buy / Insignia, this is your chance to one-up your competitors with good customer service. Otherwise, this speaker crushes other smart speakers. I have a Google Home mini, Echo Dot, and several Sonos Play:1's... The audio quality is as good as the Sonos and obviously blows the others away. The dynamic range is surprisingly good and it doesn't distort at loud volumes. The mic's pic up my voice well, though I'm not sure it's got the same great isolation/cancellation of the latest Google Home speakers. Having a clock is convenient, but the selling point is the sound quality portability.

I must say, I am super impressed with the speaker. I didn't expect the kind of loudness and bass it has. Way over my expectations and with Google Assistant, this was a good buy. Perfect for a room. Oh yes, portable too.

I absolutely love my speaker. This is my first smart speaker purchase and I have to say this is better than I expected it to be. I've been using it for about a month now and I am so glad I made this purchase. I like that I can use it to make phone calls, create schedules, play music and of course ask it all kinds of questions. I was pleasantly surprised at how loud the speaker is. It also has really good base coming from the subwoofer. The battery life works great as well. If I listen to music on it for about 3-4 hours, I usually have about 50% battery power left. Overall this is a great speaker and I'm so glad I bought it during the Black Friday sale. Although I really feel it's still worth it if you pay full price.

Picked up on sale, and for the sale price they are totally worth it. Only issues: being third party, sometimes a Google update would break features. That being said, Insignia's customer support was very responsive (whereas Best Buy's was not). Sound is loud and pretty good quality, though at higher volumes it struggles. Bluetooth range is adequate, haven't had any issues with battery life or wifi reception. Mic picks up during most situations, but if there's too much ambient noise it has a hard time detecting wake up commands. I have two of these and two of the smaller models and I am over-all very satisfied with their performance.

For a long time, voice recognition has been more frustrating than helpful. The Insignia Voice Activated Speaker is part of a new generation of voice activated Home Automation devices that is worth the time and effort of integrating into your home and life. The hardware is an attractive device that is blank black when not in use, but glows with symbols and numbers when you ask it questions or give it commands. One thing you don't have to ask it is what the local time it is, since even in idle mode it displays the time in pale white numbers. If you Say "Hey Google, What temperature is it in the house?" it will tell you that you don't have the required home automation device installed for that and it will recommend where to buy one. She's quite a sales lady. PROS: - Very handy in the kitchen answering questions about cooking recipes, times and temperatures as well as setting multiple timers without touching it with food covered fingers. - It will control home automation devices like Phillips QUE Lights and various door locks. - It will take spoken questions and speak the answers it receives after searching the internet. - The sound quality is pleasant enough to listen to internet services like Spotify and Pandora. CONS: - It's a little creepy since it is listening all of the time. For example, if you have a conversation with another person about flights to a certain destination and later ask it to check general flight costs, it will tell you the price of the flight between cities you were talking about minutes before with a human. - It requires opening a Google Home and Gmail account to use it even if you don't care to use Google. You also have to install a Google assistant App on your phone to activate it. - You have to have a good Wi-Fi signal in the location you use it and you have to provide the password to that router.

I purchased this when it was on sale for $24.99 and have had it for a couple weeks. My only regret is that I did not buy two at that price! Set up was easy, when I connected it to wi-fi it immediately did a firmware update and I have had no problems with it thus far. The portability is a great feature. I used it last weekend in the back yard while I was raking leaves and the sound was excellent! I know there are reviews that talk about problems updating the firmware, but I'm guessing that has been corrected with the latest update!

Best smart speaker for the price

I recently bought this speaker on sale for $25. I saw it has google assistant on it so I thought "why not, it'll be at least as good as my google home minis which I love". I could not have been more wrong. For listening to music it is miles ahead of a mini. The Google Home Mini's function perfect for what I want them to do but do not have a satisfactory sound quality at the volume I listen to (which is not that loud). This Insignia portable speaker has a good sound quality. I went back and bought three more. Now I have all-home sound at a sound quality that I am very happy with. I compared the sound quality with a Bose Soundlink and the Insignia is definitely not on the same level. I am not an audiophile but the Insignia is very acceptable at $25. Even at $45 (the current price at the time of this review). If you're thinking about purchasing a Google Home Mini and the price of this speaker is even close, get the Insignia. The sound quality difference is night and day. I have seen some posts that mention updates are slow but the Insignia does everything I need it to. I'm not sure if it calls and texts yet. As for the four star review, it could have easily been a five star. This speaker displays the time which is AWESOME! It also displays the outside temperature... when asked. It then turns the temperature display off. I would love to be able to look at the speaker and see the outside temperature. Instead, I have to ask. I have seen many reviews of this speaker on other sites and this seems to be a common complaint. I would have given this review 5 stars if Insignia didn't display the temp at all. The fact that they don't display it until you verbally ask for the temp (which the speaker then tells you anyway) baffles me. It's literally pointless to display the temperature after you just said it. Insignia, is there a setting I don't know about? Your products are amazing and that is why I am baffled by this.

Great Portable Speaker when under $50

Purchased on sale for $35, and well worth the price. Speaker is stereo with a small sub woofer. Better highs and richer lows than the non-portable Insignia smart speaker. Only thing I noticed was setting the volume above 75 it starts to distort a little bit. Please remember that once you take it out of the box, let it charge up for an hour or two. The setup is easy using an Android phone running 7.1 and Google Home app. Took about 20 mins to get setup as it needed to pull a firmware update at the end of the setup. That part took 6-7 mins alone, so be patient and just leave your phone alone during this time. I haven't tested the 5 hours of battery life, but I accidentally plugged the unit into a plug that wasn't working next to my bed. 7 hours later and 2 hours past when I had the alarm set, I woke up late for work. The speaker wasn't playing anything, just on the night stand. I will update in a couple weeks once I test unit out more as to the battery life.
