    Poor quality product

The initial setup was relatively easy and it works well with Alexa (some initial hiccups but manageable). After a month of usage this device is acting up. I can no longer connect. Even after power cycle and reset this can no longer connect to WiFi. The app and the server behind it is really bad. Very bad user interface and not much helpful information. The customer care is equally bad. Their tech support seems to have no clue about the issues and trouble shooting steps. Will try to get a replacement and try my luck again.

Easy to set up and use. No need for instructions. Works better than the Belkin Wemo plugs and for a lot less. The app is my only complaint. You have to sign in to your Best Buy account to control the devices. It doesn’t keep you signed in or use TouchID on the iPhone. However, because it integrates with my Amazon Echo so well, I never have to use the app. Very responsive. I have already bought another and plan to buy more in the future.

Works, but setup is frustrating and time consuming

I recently bought and set up a Phillips Hue bridge and light bulbs, which my Amazon Echo turns off and on and dims. The Philips install and setup went very quickly and without a hitch. So, I was disappointed by the Insignia Smart Plug setup, which took at least an hour. The instructions were cryptic and did not adequately describe the sequence required to get the balky outlet to connect to my WiFi network. As a result, I repeated the process a dozen or more times before the outlet connected and worked successfully with the Insignia app. Once that was accomplished, however, connecting the outlet to my Amazon Echo was a snap. I realize this is a low-cost item with competitors priced two, three or four times as much. Still, Best Buy should provide better instructions for setup.

Don't by WiFi smart plugs yet- app is unstable!

I purchased a number of these Insignia WiFi Smart Plugs and they seem to work ok when the BestBuy-Insignia connectivity servers and application are working. I had a hand full of these devices working just fine and then they all went off-line intermittently. I called the Best Buy product support number and was told the server software was being updated in a couple of days and to wait and try again later. I'm surprised they put out the product without a stable support application and server system.

Works with Alexa (Echo) after you add insignia connect skill in Alexa App (skills). Hopefully this helps the next poor soul.

Good to start but company needs work

I got the plug specifically for my Christmas tree and lights. It worked fine for that. However, it started flashing for no reason today. I went through several troubleshooting techniques and nothing happened. Not only was it still flashing, it would not connect. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I called customer service. Apparently the app is under "construction" and will not be available for at least 48 hours. No warning about this from the company. It's a good thing I'm not using the plug for anything like security or something important.

Decent Wifi Plug for the Price

I got three of these plugs and they're the first smart plugs I've owned. The plug was easy to set up and works decently well. The google home integration is nice to have and it works great! I've noticed some flakiness with the on/off commands just being ignored from both google home and the insignia connect app, however this is rare. It would be nice to have IFTTT integration to give more power of the things we can do with the plug. It's also annoying that schedules in the app cannot seem to cross the midnight boundary. Overall the plug is solid, and I would consider more depending on sales, however it seems like other plugs at the full price point offer a bit better integrations and features.

I didn't care for the power meter option for the other version, and figured I save a few dollars with this unit. Did not realize this version doesn't support HomeKit. Returning it.

    Not Very Good

These smart plugs are pretty easy to install however, it is spotty if they work. I get a lot of error messages when trying to turn them off or on. I would say they are about 80% reliable. However, my biggest issue is I have not been able to get them to work with Amazon Alexa at all. I have searched the web for troubleshooting steps and have tried everyone of them I have found and nothing has resolved the issue that the Alexa app won't find the devices when you scan for them. I would not buy these again.

I have three of these and they work fine once programmed, but they stop connecting about 1-2 times a week and I have to go through the whole connect process again and again.

Can't get 'em to connect? TRY THIS:

I couldn't get them to connect to my network until I changed this setting on my wifi router: The SECURITY MODE is the type of security on your wifi. These will connect well to an open network with no security and no password. But one should use security. These will only work if the wifi security type is set to: WPA-PSK or WPAWPA2-PSK If it's set only to WPA2-PSK, these cannot connect..

    WORST APP

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

App works on my Android Cellphone, but NOT ANY OF MY Android Tablets, there have been no updates, even though BestBuy knows there are issues with App, no support, NOR is there an App for PC/Mac computers. The 1-plug i have been able to connect using only my phone, works well, but if there is not going to be more platform options for this with this APP, it is a moot point and for $30, buy a Wemo or Walmart brand. I would not recommend it until there is a better APP.

    Worked for a little while

It worked great for a week. Then it lost connection. I couldn't get it to reconnect. I uninstalled the app from my phone and started over and was able to get it to connect again. It worked great again for another week before it lost connection. I had to again uninstall the app and start over. This time it wouldn't connect. I noticed when the app is installed on my phone I keep getting a "WIFI disconnected" notification and my phone constantly drops it's connection to my home's WIFI. When I uninstall the app the problem goes away. I've tried reinstalling the app and it once again causes my phone to constantly lose it's WIFI connection. I give up. It is a headache to deal with, especially when I can't get my lights to turn on when it's dark. I'm going spend the extra $10 and buy a different brand . Since I don't have the box anymore to return it I will put it in a junk drawer and maybe try it again in a few months to see if an app update fixes the problem. If it causes me any more headaches I will take a hammer and smash it into pieces so I at least get some enjoyment from this piece of garbage. This is the second Insignia product I've owned. I have an Insignia TV and after a year the HDMI ports stopped working. I'm done with Insignia products.

This is my first poor experience with an Insignia product, which made it all the more disappointing. I have numerous smart devices in my home, and while setup can sometimes be tricky, I've never spent more than 10-15 minutes connecting them. After attempting for over two hours to connect this smart plug to my wifi, I finally had to tap out. Setup on the app is very frustrating (after clicking ready to pair device, it will disconnect your wifi, prompt you to connect to it, automatically connect, and then make you click ready to pair again) and I ended with nothing but errors prompting me to factory reset the plug. Factory reset is simple, just hold the power button for ten seconds or so... This works one out of twenty times, if you're lucky, so you can essentially never reset it, and you just get the same error message. I attempted uninstalling the app three different times and downloading it, and surprisingly this would shut the plug off for me to reset it. Even after that though, I would eventually receive the same error, unable to pair, factory reset the device. I still have faith in Insignia, but not sure if I will attempt another smart home device from them.

    DO NOT BUY!

I thought because it's a Best Buy brand they would make more of an effort to support the software but the software and the hardware are of poor quality. It loses connection more often than not. Troubleshooting it takes a very long time and the app is extremely buggy. I switched over to TP-Link Smart Plug because it works like it's suppose to.

    Completely Sub-Par

The only reason why I’m okay with giving it one star is because it works with Alexa. That’s about it. I only bought it because it was the cheapest smart plug at $25. It is completely antiquated so even that was too much money. The product itself is bulky, has an obnoxiously loud click when it turns on or off, and that’s just the hardware. There’s no easy reset button. If you have a power outage, it won’t reconnect once power is restored. You have to delete the plugs from your profile, delete the app from your phone, reinstall the app, and then you have to manually reset the plug by holding the power button and plugging it in at the same time and pray that it works (maybe 1 out of 10 tries). Between that and the antiquated setup process in the app, it took me over 45min to set up two of these after a blackout. The second time the power went out I tried for about 5 minutes and just threw it in the garbage because it wasn’t working and the app couldn’t connect to the same network it had been connected to for 6 months. It’s 2018 and this product looks, feels, and works like it’s from 2003. Why doesn’t this have push button WPS setup is beyond me.

I use my smart plug for my space heater... when I wake up I turn it on but sometimes I'm rushing out door and forget to turn it back off... Now I just open app on my phone and just like that it's turn off and things are safe and I'm at peace of mind. Best Purchase this month!
