I thought I could use as a stand alone device. I didn't know until I got it that I had to go though a web service to set up control of a switch a couple feet away. Too much of a hassle to set up and too intrusive to give all of my info to a service that could be managed out of a foreign county.

I use these to control christmas lights and decorations and just found out that best buy has discontinued the app and support for these so they are now useless. When I tried to log into the app I was told to go to a website to try to get compensation for them turning these into garbage.

I wouldn’t know how this product worked because I was unable to get the app going. For three days I called the trouble shooting number and I was told that the reason my product was not working was because the app was not working. They kept telling me to check every 24 hours, after three days I gave up and returned the time

After over 10 times of resetting and trying to connect and numerous setups it did not work. So back it went and I ended up exchanging for the Wemo which I setup and connected on the first try . It shouoldn't be rocket science to get a smart plug to work, yet the Insignia plug is not worth it after one hour of trying.

Bought product and downloaded iPhone app to set up and tried to login using my bestbuy account. Didn't work. Logged in on computer and was able to get in. Changed password twice and app still didn't allow login, but both times on computer the changed password worked just fine. App appears to not be syncing or working properly.
