Don't let the casing fool you, this vacuum is cool

So I own the S9 Roomba and that machine is a beast complete with its own suction base unit and bag for the dirt and full mapping out of floors and smart zone memory etc. This device is more like the no frills version of the Roomba, pretty large vacuum, a bit flimsier in the casing, more like all plastic instead of mix of plastic and metal and no smart maps, zones, memory of floors etc. and no large suction base unit with bags. However, this thing is fast, its quiet and it zooms under beds, chairs and is typical Roomba, it knows enough to go around objects and runs over cords easily. I was surprised when it got low on battery it just died in the middle of a cycle, causing me to go searching for it. And the small dirt cup is something to also get used to, emptying every time it fills up, however, the suction power and full cleaning of this device is just like any other Roomba and it does a speedy job in no time and a quality product. Pricing is on par with what you get with this device and I would recommend it for anyone that doesn't want to spend the $1200 on an S9 unit.

Good "half smart" robot vacuum. Strong motor

The Roomba 694 is a “half-smart” robot vacuum that’s a bit clunky, but cleans well. It’s Wi-Fi capable, so you can control it with the iRobot app, set cleaning schedules, and even command it to start and stop with the sound of your voice using Google Home or Alexa integration. I was kind of shocked how easy it was to set up in the app, because I have 2 other “smarter” robot vacuums from other popular brands that supposedly have this feature, but I could never get them connected properly. This is my first Roomba, and while the app controls for the 694 are sparse, I appreciate how snappy the app’s user interface is. It’s well thought out and easy to use, however with the 694, all you can really do is start and stop cleaning, integrate it with Google Home or Alexa, and program a cleaning schedule. That said, it was super enjoyable to have a robot vacuum that actually responds to my voice. Outside of a responsive app, the hard buttons on the vacuum itself work well and offer the ability to start and pause cleaning, spot clean, or send it to Home base. Going back to Home base is where this vacuum gets a bit weird, because sometimes it makes it and sometimes it doesn’t. It doesn’t have mapping technology, so I don’t know how it figures out where the charging base is, but it usually eventually makes it back there when it’s done. If it’s vacuuming the same room as the recharging base it’s fine, but it can get lost when it ventures further out. Not a big deal if you’re used to the dummy bumper based robot vacuums as it’s still a tad bit “smarter” overall. Cleaning wise, the Roomba 694 has great suction and moves quickly. The single cleaning arm does a good job guiding dirt and debris into the vacuum rollers and it had no problem climbing over a ¾” floor transition we have in the house. My other 2 robot vacuums can barely get over it, so it was a marvel to see the 694 climb it with ease. It did a great job on hardwood and thick rugs and supposedly has dirt detection where it automatically spends more time cleaning dirtier areas. It’s nothing I can tell in action, but my floors feel squeaky clean, so I’ll let the results speak for themselves. It’s funny, watching how well it cleans and how agile it moves, I think of it as the young dumb teenager of my robot vacuuming group. It seems physically more capable than the other two, and while it’s smart enough to not fall off cliffs and kind of find its way home, it doesn’t have object avoidance, room mapping, programmable “no-go” zones, or the capability to vacuum in organized lines. I don’t have to worry about it falling down the stairs, but I still have to clear the house of cables before setting it free, and block off the areas I don’t want it to go. Overall, the Roomba 694 is a capable “half smart” robot vacuum with a strong motor and Wi-Fi capabilities. It’s a bit clunky and doesn’t always find its way home, but cleans well and is easy to control via smartphone app or Google Home / Alexa voice integration. It’s a solid choice if you’re in the market for a bumper guided robot vacuum that’s slightly more capable than the base models. PROS - Cleans well - Motor seems strong - Responsive buttons - Moves quickly - Gets over 3/4” floor transitions very well - Smart cleaning / dirt detection - WiFi / app controllable - Can set cleaning schedule in app - Google Home and Alexa compatible - Cliff detection - Not totally dumb - Easy to maintain - Good size dust bin - Super easy Google Home integration that works - Responsive to app commands - App fairly easy to use CONS - Motor kind of loud - Moves randomly - Only 1 cleaning speed - Only half smart (no home mapping, not sure about object avoidance) - Have to clear cables and setup home for vacuum before cleaning - Spends a lot time stuck between chair legs - Needs to explore how to get Home, can get lost. - Limited app controls

I’ve had the Roomba 694 for a week now. I’ve had the Roomba clean every day throughout the week to get a good idea of what it can do. Positives: It cleans. I emptied the dust bin after every run and there’s dirt being picked up each time. Negatives: It seems to get lost every run. It’s literally cleaning while bouncing off the walls. I turned it on today so I could it again before posting the review. The Roomba found the kitchen for the first time this week. It stayed in the kitchen for about 20 minutes and completed four rotations inside the kitchen. At this point, I paused it on the app and made it go back to the base. I then watched the Roomba take about 20-25 to find its way out of the kitchen and back to the base. At one point, the Roomba simply had to make a left turn to get back to the base and re-charge. Instead, it turned right and went around the room for 10 minutes before it found the base. Gets stuck. During today’s run, the Roomba went onto a landing section of hardwood near the front door. It could not transition itself to run on the carpeted area in a straight light. After several times, it turned itself at a 45-degree angle and was able to get into the carpet. I saw the Roomba transition from the hardwood to the carpet with no issues earlier in the week. Never finishes the job. I understand it’s an entry level Roomba, but some type of mapping would make this a lot better. Once realizing the Roomba went over the same area several times, I thought to myself “when will it knows it’s done cleaning?”. When the Roomba went back to recharge on its own, the app says the cleaning is cancelled, but I didn’t cancel it. So, if you’re looking for a starter Roomba and have a small open area, but this a good place to start. If you have a large cleaning area and/or lots of furniture, this Roomba may not be best for you. All that being said, I see the value and the Roomba does work.

Smart home connected vacuum with great automation

This is my first iRobot vacuum, and while I've tried a few other robot vacuums, they have always been lacking in the ability to clean or navigate, sometimes both. The iRobot Roomba 694 is a step up from other brands in its ability to navigate and has outstanding cleaning functionality for management of pet hair. In the box is the Roomba, startup guide, docking station, and spare filter. Setup is easy, install the iRobot app on your phone, I use an Android, and follow the prompts to connect to wireless to complete setup. Inside the app are a few different functions: setting a routine, limiting time to vacuum, viewing history, starting a cleaning session and a message center. One of my favorite functions is IFTTT, which allows the vacuum to use your phone's location and vacuum when it identifies the phone has left the house. This means I don't have to worry about scheduling and can expect it to vacuum when I leave to run errands. Alexa functionality is also available, while it works well, I don't find much use for it, and instead either use the IFTTT settings or cleaning from the app on my phone. As for physical footprint, the docking station has a slim profile, which I placed a few feet away from the corner in a large tiled room. So far I haven't had any issues with the Roomba returning to dock, or the dock not charging. The flooring types in my house are either tile or wood, there have not been any issues with the Roomba moving between flooring types. I'm also impressed with the vacuum's ability to navigate around furniture. This is much better functionality than another brand I have, including making tight circles around leg chairs and cleaning under the bed, not just random stripes. The dirt canister is easy to open, slide it out and press the lever to open the dust compartment door, then dump and return. The only issue it has is if the vacuum gets partially on a plush rug, then I will have to physically move it to a new area. When this happens, there are voice alerts from the vacuum that it needs to be moved. The voice commands combined with the app, make the iRobot easy to use and diagnose issues. There is also a deep clean function which will ensure the Roomba stays in one area to clean and will continue until the sensors detect there is no more dirt, at which point it turns off. Overall I'm a fan, there are still the minor expected limitations that other robot vacuums have of navigating complex footprints or getting hung up on different surfaces. The nice thing about this is that it provides an audible notification of what the issue is, allowing ease of use.

After years of hearing how good the robot vacuums were I got the Roomba 694 wifi connected robot vacuum by iRobot in charcoal grey. Mainly because after multiple surgeries it’s a bit harder for me to spend a lot of time on my feet so I thought this would be good for the in between times. It does not have the mapping technology so it just bumps into things and turns itself to go a different way. Sometimes it gets all areas if I let it run as long as it wants other times it misses some areas and redoes the same area repeatedly. This is a bit annoying as I have to go through and see what it did each time to know if I need to do that area. The areas is does vacuum seem to be done well and it does pull a lot of debris and pet hair up. The container is a bit small and doesn’t seem to tell you when it’s full so I find myself having to check it frequently to keep it from being so full it won’t pick up more. The size given the overall size of the unit would be hard to improve however I think they could improve it by giving an indicator that the debris container is full. Setup is very easy and straight forward. I had it up and running in a matter of minutes after letting it do the recommended initial charge. It also gives the option of setting a schedule so you can basically set it and forget it. The app also shows how long it ran and if it had any “dirt events” where it detected a heavy amount of dirt and did an extra job cleaning there. It moves smoothly from the carpet areas to the hard floor areas. It doesn’t seem to have any issues with throw rugs or mats. The only time it did was on my kitchen mat that goes under the cabinet so it got wedged in there. Overall this isn’t a bad vacuum but I wouldn’t mind seeing some improvements.

Doesn’t clean any surfaces that are black or dark grey. Huge let down, we reached out for support and got no help. I don’t understand how a huge company can have such a fatal flaw on a machine that is meant to clean the floor and make your life easier. This was supposed to be an upgrade from our Shark roomba, but we found ourselves having to hunt it down because it was always getting stuck with error codes (4-6 per run). We returned and bought a new shark roomba, it cleans just as good and actually goes on dark surfaces, best part is I don’t have to baby sit it, it never gets stuck! 10/10 recommend getting a Shark, 0/10 for the IRobot. Hope this helps someone save their money!

This is my second robot vacuum and since the other is over three years old I had high expectations on how the systems had progressed in that time. Unfortunately, some things apparently do not change. First let me cover the good. Wireless connectivity is a huge plus for me especially since it integrate with Google Home and Alexa. The Roomba app is pretty nice allowing you to create a schedule when it should run, a status of what the unit is doing and even messages if it needs to be attended to. As for the operation of the unit, I have one warning, if you have/are OCD DO NOT watch this thing operate! It will follow the most random and illogical patterns to the point that I was getting confused why it did certain things. This could be it learning its boundaries and after time it will do things differently. Right now, it may clean one area multiple time and completely miss others. Again, this could be part of its learning process. As for the actual cleaning it does a pretty good job picking up almost everything in its path. This included a napkin that was under a table that did get jammed but it sent me a notification that the pickup brush needed to be cleaned. Interestingly, it has only one edge brush so it will only clean along baseboards in one direction. This is a curious design since my 3 year old model has two. Overall it is a decent robotic vacuum but with any purchase of this nature, create your list of wants and needs.

Good robotic vac for a reasonable price. I've been looking at robotic vacs for awhile now but couldn't see paying the high prices that most seem to have. This one is much more affordable so I decided to give it a try. Roombas seem to have a good reputation and better reviews than most. Don't get rid of your old vac though as this is only for floors. I like to use my old vac for dusting, cobwebs, stairs, the car, etc. Also there may be some small areas that the roomba might miss though it is pretty thorough. It definitely makes cleaning easier and cleans well. Has dual brushes which seem powerful. One conventional bristle brush and one with solid rubber ribs. Good suction too maybe better than my old manual vac. The third brush is designed to get into corners and it does that well too. Much quieter than my old manual vacuum. I have one cat (who sheds a lot in warm weather) and she used to hate it when I would vacuum. She doesn't seem to mind so much when this one is running and almost seems to think it might be a toy for her. I kind of enjoy watching it too. You do need to clear up clutter off the floor to allow it to get around better. Also watch out for electrical cords which it could get hung up on (possibly pulling down objects connected to them though that hasn't happened to me). Seems gentle on obstacles including furniture, woodwork, etc. with a sensitive bumper to detect them. Good app lets you set a schedule, timer, start/stop, return to base. Also lets you start it when you're not home. Finds the base (charger) pretty well, though I found it's better to locate it near the center of the house so it can find it easier from anywhere. Supposed to detect stairways to prevent it from falling down them but I can't really confirm this since my house is only one level. If you have an upstairs you may want to consider getting another for your second floor. I do have a basement but usually keep the door shut.
