Buyer Beware: Defective Robot Out of the Box

I’m extremely disappointed with this Roomba, especially given the price point (over $500, even on sale).
Right out of the box, the robot made extreme noise and vibration, loud enough that it was clearly not normal operation. This wasn’t a minor rattle or break-in issue; it sounded and felt defective from the very first run.
I contacted iRobot support and, after a long and frustrating troubleshooting process, they ultimately confirmed that the robot shipped with defective rollers. To get to that conclusion, I had to:
(1) Record and send a video of the noise
(2) Troubleshoot the robot step by step with support
(3) Take and submit photos of the robot’s undercarriage
This took a significant amount of time and effort for a product that’s supposed to be premium and ready to use out of the box.
What’s most frustrating is the resolution: all iRobot offered was to send replacement rollers. No replacement unit, no refund option, no acknowledgment that receiving a defective product at this price is unacceptable.
For something marketed as a high-end, reliable cleaning robot, this experience was anything but. Quality control clearly failed here, and the burden of fixing the issue was placed entirely on me as the customer.
If you’re considering this Roomba, be aware that you may end up spending hours troubleshooting a brand-new device, and still be left with a “fix” that doesn’t feel proportional to the problem.

Replaced and older Roomba. This one works much better. No issues so far. Loving the AutoEmpty Dock. So much better than manually dumping daily.

The app is a little funky and I've had the unit sit in one place while running and had no control of it. Beside these two problems the vacuum does a good job.

A Long-Time Roomba Customer Lost by Broken Promise

As a long-time Roomba customer dating back to the first generation of the product line, I expected a basic level of professionalism and integrity from iRobot. Instead, my recent experience reflects a serious failure in customer trust and internal accountability. I was working with a representative named George S., who provided a written and confirmed price quote for the Roomba 705 Vac: $549.99 – $130 trade-in – 15% discount ($67.49), totaling $382.49. I have emails as proof documenting the exact price he offered me. However, the moment I informed him that I was ready to complete the purchase, he stopped responding entirely. As soon as the product price increased from $549 to the $700 range, he suddenly contacted me again—pushing me to buy it at the higher cost. When I declined and said I would wait until the price dropped again, he went silent once more. When the price returned to $549 last Monday, he again did not respond. I escalated the situation through the main iRobot customer support line, provided full context, and referenced the email proof. I was told that they could not honor the quoted price, and that only George could apply the 15% discount, despite the fact that he refused to respond. This reveals either a lack of internal communication, a lack of accountability, or a deliberate practice of inconsistent pricing—none of which reflect well on the company. This kind of opportunistic and unreliable behavior is unacceptable from any organization, especially one competing in a rapidly advancing market. After years of purchasing Roomba products—including owning the S9—this experience has completely eroded my confidence in iRobot’s customer service standards. As a result, I chose not to proceed with the purchase.
