Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the Roomba 980's impressive cleaning performance, ease of use, and smart navigation. Positive feedback also highlights its effective pet hair removal, strong suction, and convenient app control features. However, some users find the robot vacuum to be noisy and have noted that the dustbin fills up quickly. The relatively high price point is also a recurring concern for some customers.

I bought 2! We have a two story home and bought one and immediately bought a second for the upstairs! You can start them from your phone! We normally run them at night and wake up to perfectly groomed carpet lines. Only draw backs are they do need to be refreshed every few months with a $30 kit that includes a new spinning sweeper, filters, and brushes, that and if you have a large area the dust bin fills up quickly and needs to be emptied after every use.

We were told it had no problem with shag. Every time it was on shag rug it had error 2. Well, now it's been almost a month and I have to return it because it gets an error on hardwood.

I’ve owned both the 960 and the 980. My wife and I have 2 German Shepherds that she’d like crazy. Our house has mostly tile flooring with carpet in the bedrooms. After reading reviews we bought the 960, which did a great job until the bin was half way full. Having Shepherds, obviously that didn’t take too long. After the bin was full, it would drag hair and deposit it into one spot, usually a carpeted room. Eventually the 960 stopped working and we decided to upgrade to 980 to try it - if this one broke and failed we were just going to get a regular vacuum and suck it up and vacuum ourselves. We’ve found the extra horsepower added to the 980 worth it. The hair in the bin is compacted and it no longer deposit hair in the carpet when full. It picks up a ton of dirt and for us it is worth it since we are on the go with the dogs.

This is the third model that I have owned in the 6-900 range, and found the 600 series to get the job done, the 800 series to be unneedingly complicated. and this current model to be truly impressive. Prior to using this unit in my home, I was using two Dyson models (the v8 cordless and an upright ball)... What the Roomba has picked up that the Dysons had left behind in conjunction with methodical movements versus bouncing from wall to wall makes it truly autonomous with the exception of emptying it. and the VACUUM LINES are baseball diamond worthy! Only complaint is the sensitivity of the beacons; I have positioned one a the base of a sofa that is too tight of a fit but the unit avoids the area entirely... Surely there is a workaround I just havent considered.

I LOVE my new Roomba! ! It does a fabulous job on my tile floors and it goes under the bed to collect all the dog hair that seems to accumulate there! My home is all on one floor and the Roomba does the whole thing, even the carpeted rooms, with ease and efficiency! When the battery runs low, it just goes back to the charging station. Amazing! Totally love my Roomba!!

I've owned a Roomba or two in the past, and wasn't very satisfied with the performance and maintenance required. I've been using Neato robots since then. I appreciated the methodic way they operated and that they didn't crash into my furniture. But then the Neatos were excessively loud, required babysitting 50% of the time, and worst of all they easily choke on fibers and hair pulled from my wool area rugs. While the dust bin on Neato is supposed to be relatively big, it's always a bit tricky to empty. They also required laying down unattractive magnetic strips anywhere you wanted to keep the robot away from (which is to say the items it couldn't be trusted around). After months of weighing high price with risk of more disappointment, I decided to give iRobot a try and get the 980. So glad I did! I've had it a couple of weeks now and it's just about perfect in every way. It's not silent by any means, but even in turbo mode the noise isn't as aggravating as Neato. It's everything I hoped for: methodical, effective, doesn't require babysitting (not once so far!), doesn't choke on area rug fibers, doesn't crash into things (maybe a love tap now and then), and is very simple to maintain (very low maintenance). It does a good job cleaning the hard floors and area rugs, and I can actually trust it to do so. The dust bin couldn't be easier to empty, and I'm not sure how it compares to Neato in capacity--but it's plenty for my dust and Shiba Inu fur and a snap to empty. Only slightly negative thing I will say is that sometimes I think even with turbo carpet mode it still doesn't clean my area rugs as well as I'd like, but it does leave them neatly swept and doesn't get clogged doing so, so I'm perfectly satisfied if I still need to get out the big vacuum once in a while. The lighthouses are very compact and unobtrusive--much better than they used to be and much better than Neato's ugly and less effective magnetic strips. And on top of all that, it went on sale yesterday so I went today to get my $100 credit. Very happy!

I was skeptical about how well the Roomba could clean our hardwood floors, and decided to pull the trigger after reading all of the reviews. It is amazing - cleans the entire 1st floor very well. The geek in me still wonders how the Roomba does it, and our cats are quite curious too. Tons of cool features like resuming when not finished, getting back home to charge when battery is low, app scheduling, bin dirt guage, etc. Top of the line!

    Replaced my full size vacuum

I own 2 cats and a large dog so vacuuming became an every day task. After doing my research the roomba 980 caught my eye... so did the price tag... IRobot products are extremely reliable so I went for it. I can say I am not disappointed at all. The roomba has a ton of power when dealing with carpet and leaves straight lines navigating back a fourth. The side brush does its job on the corners and the roomba is able to get under furniture with easy. With the long battery I am able to do both floors of my house with one charge, possibly having to empty the storage bin in between. After a week i sold my upright vac and use the roomba on pretty much everything and a small stick vac for my stairs. If you do take the plunge, you wont be sorry!

I have been looking to buy one of these for a while but due to the price I was a little hesitant. We bought it a couple weeks ago because we got a cat and it works wonderful! Even cleans under the bed and dressers, right where the cat likes to hide from my 3 year old. I am impressed with how good it works and we plan on buying one for downstairs eventually.

I bought this with some doubts as I had not heard really great things. Reviews were either good or bad. Anyway Ive had this about 2 weeks and so far it cleans great. Did not know how dirty we were until I went to empty the dirt cup. I has only hung up once and it went under a very low dining table. I am having some trouble with the app but I guess I dont really need it. Its not near as noisy as I had read.

    GREAT I-ROBOT 980 - SO FAR!

Just got it early this week, but I LOVE it so far! It was easy to set up - if you follow the detailed instructions. Fifi does an amazingly good job cleaning. Sometimes we do not understand her vacuuming pattern, but she gets it done, even goes back and does the edges of the room when she is through. We have about 2,600 sq. ft. on our first floor, and it takes her 2-3 trips back to the re-charging stand for her to get it done, but she does a good job. WE only found one place where she gets stuck and we added one of the markers so she does not go there - problem solved. For people that complain that the vacuum pattern was erratic and they just returned the unit, give her a little time. We have noticed that she is still improving her vacuum pattern (we have her set to run every day). The other thing to watch is the dirt bin. I found, particularly when we started, that I needed to empty it during every re-charge, but now only once in the middle of the job for the whole 2,600 sq. ft. We have pure white carpet and tile floors and 2 cats (one a 20 pound grey tabby with tons of hair) and I am still amazed at just how much Fifi is picking up. She get UNDER the furniture - something our housekeeper does not do! I will review again in 3-4 months for an update but right now I love her!!!!

    Excellent vacuum robot

If you are on the market for a robotic vacuum this is the one to get. It breaks your house down into zones and vacuums in a predictable pattern. Now with that being said it might break a room down into four different zones, do one zone and then go to a different room but I can assure you it will come back and finish the job. It does occasionally get stuck on lower furniture. The battery lasts the allotted time but depending on how many passes it takes over a certain area it may take a cycle or two. It always returns to the base unless it got stuck. It picks up pet fir with ease. The two rollers don't get hair wrapped around them and are easy to clean. The only cons I see is having to empty the bin and wipe it down often (to be expected). That can prolong a cleaning job. Definitely worth the money!

    Mixed review

Previously to the 980, I had the 880. The 980 has a much better algorithm and is easier to operate. I had this unit for 5 days now. Two of the days have been successful in cleaning the house. The others have not been. The 2 days that were successful, was when I was at home. The other 3 had issues, where stuff got tangled in it, it thought it saw a cliff and it could not find its home base. I also noticed that when it vacuums, it tends to move the base so, then the thing cannot access the base. I guess it was to assign a grade, it would be that 50-60% of the time, was successful the rest was not. A couple of instances, when it had issues, it would require me to intervene and then would tell me that the job was complete when it was not. The last 3 failures resulted in the house not getting completely vacuumed. I was expecting much more for a $1000. To a certain extent, if I have to monitor it while being at home, it would be faster for me just to vacuum the house. Also, I have a 3000 square foot house. The downstairs took close to 8 hours to get done and the upstairs was about the same. I also tested the vacuum in Auto Carpet Boost mode after it was done vacuuming and my Dyson upright picked up way more from the carpet than the Roomba did. So, this is by no means a vacuum replacement but more of a supplement

I am so impressed with this little robot. I have it programmed to run everyday at 11am. It does all but alittle area of my whole downstairs. It automatically returns itself to its dock and after maybe 90 min. it starts back up, goes right to where it left off and finishes the job and then returns itself to its dock to charge up to be ready for the next day. I vacuum now only once a month with a standard vacuum. It cleans really well, it gets to spots I never do. It is so nice to come home from work everyday and the carpets and kitchen floor are clean. I love this little robot. I highly recommend it.
