Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the Roomba 980's impressive cleaning performance, ease of use, and smart navigation. Positive feedback also highlights its effective pet hair removal, strong suction, and convenient app control features. However, some users find the robot vacuum to be noisy and have noted that the dustbin fills up quickly. The relatively high price point is also a recurring concern for some customers.

    Great Product

We've had the Roomba 960 since Christmas and it has been an AMAZING purchase. My wife has it running everyday and every time the canister has debris inside...crazy. Cleans really well. The only issue we have had is that is does not learn the trouble or problem areas where it tends to get stuck frequently. it will get stuck under the kitchen cabinet or under the corner of the couch but its not every time that it cleans that it gets stuck. this is where extra invisible wall barriers have been needed. over all, this is by far my most favorite gadget in my home!!

    The best and newest robot!

I love this robot! I researched so much and am so glad I went with the best in the bizz. Yeah its a hefty price tag but if you can swing it, it is totally worth it. I use the app to set it up for mon-friday vaccuming. This little robot keeps my floors clean and does a great job. My kids are 2 and 3 and love to throw food on the floor and spill everything, having this robot go around and vaccum everyday makes me feel like I don't have kids. It's that great :)

Not Good for Big Houses with Pets

So I bought this yesterday, after much research. It's going back to the store today for a refund. I suppose it would be okay for a small apartment with pets, or maybe even a decent sized house without pets, but the combination of pets and a large-ish floor plan makes this an inefficient approach, not worth the money. Our first floor isn't mansion-sized -- maybe around 1300 sq ft. We have two large dogs and a cat that spends a little time inside. We vacuumed with our upright first, and then unleashed the Roomba -- I tell you this because it's not like there was a ton of dirt and hair on the floor when we first used the Roomba. It was able to go about 20-30 minutes before returning to its base to have its bin emptied. That 20-30 minutes covered maybe 1/8 of the first floor, if I'm being charitable. Moreover, after dumping the bin, sometimes the Roomba would return to its base immediately to say its bin was full -- because dog hair was jammed back in the machine near the rollers, instead of in the bin. And this is AFTER using our shark upright at the outset to get most of the pet hair up. The whole idea was to have something that didn't need to be babysat constantly. Having to put everything down every 20 minutes to deal with the isn't what I had in mind. It also is painfully slow; we'd have to listen to this thing for 4-5 hours just to get our first floor done. And forget about leaving the house and letting it go, so that we don't have to listen to it -- as noted above, the bin would just fill up within the first 20 minutes, and we'd come home to 3-4 more hours of vacuuming. Not a good solution at all for us. I'm still giving it three stars, because it might be good for someone with a smaller house/apartment or without pets. I'm even going to "recommend this to a friend," with the caveats above, because I can see how it would be a good solution for folks with the right situation.

Nav Bad & CEO Says He Can Sell Maps of Your Home

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Have tried Roomba before and its random navigation patterns were useless for large rooms. The promise of these newer, more expensive vacs was intelligent navigation. That's a joke. If ignoring hallways, areas bordering walls and going into and back out of the same doorway 10 times in 5 minutes is intelligent???? Since the thing uses cameras, you can't program it for the middle of the night and use it in darkness. You have to leave "some" light on. I kept reducing the space to vacuum down until it was just my den and it still was unable to finish without having to return to the base to re-charge. It might go over the same area 5 times and ignore a long strip of floor 3 feet away. I also noted that the very small bin is full after every use. It's often mostly "fibers" combined with some actual debris that gets tracked in each day. Upon closer inspection it seems the fibers are pulled from rugs or carpet by the rubber heads on the bottom of the vacuum. Since most of the area I use vac on is tile, I first wondered about this when I replaced a large 9x13 rug in the center of the den with a brand new one. The vacuum went over it and was full before anyone ever even walked on it. Ran it again, full again... and again... and again. My main new issue is this model "maps" your home as it vacuums. No actual use for map other than to see where it's been. What I'd not known was it then apparently uploads those maps to the iRobot company. The CEO has said in past week that he has the right to sell maps of your home's interior. If you don't want that to happen, you have to turn off some of the wifi functionality you're paying extra for. I've used this daily since I bought on July 1. About 40% of the time I have to look for it in the morning because it's not returned to the base to re-charge. Today, for example, it was just sitting in the middle of the floor with no charge left. Given the CEO casually indicating they're going to invade of your privacy and the general defects of this very expensive vacuum, it's getting returned. FYI - I have and/or have had Neato and Samsung robot vacs also. The Neato is a good bit better at navigation, thoroughness and quickness. Drawback is you have to use magnetic strips on the floor. An ugly hassle if you need to use the vacuum daily (I have dogs). The very expensive Samsung vacs do the best job at cleaning, but suffer from quality/breakdown issues that leave them bricked. Given we're expecting cars to navigate themselves soon, seems like someone could produce a robot vacuum that could minimally do a good job and let you define where to vacuum without the need for strips or towers.

    Amazing!

We run it three times per week and are amazed at how much it picks up, even the day after we used our Dyson. We have two cats and it vacuums up enough fur to build a third. The noise it makes is proportional to its size; not silent, but it's a vacuum so some noise is expected. It leaves the floor looking great.

This is one of the best inventions ever! I am unable to drag around a large corded vacuum cleaner as I have had two back surgeries. This is a back saver for me. It cleans much better than you think it will. I don't think I'll be able to live without it anymore.

I use to have the irobot 650 but having two dogs that shed like crazy the 650 could not handle it. This robot does a very detailed job and picks up everything! It does a better job then my Dyson!

luv this thing, way more than we thought we would. Works great. This is the second Roomba we have owned. Since it has lots of moving parts we opted for the 4 year protection plan with the first one. Glad we did. After two years of great performance, the first one quit working. Best Buy replaced it with an updated model. So far, it is working great.

    It gets the job done

I mainly bought the Roomba 980 for cleaning up dog hair. It does a pretty decent job of picking up all of the loose hairs spread around the house. I like the fact that cords will not get tangled in the iRobot or if it does find itself in a jam the robot shuts off. This Roomba does what I need it to do and I'm really loving it now. I did read other reviews who say that their Roomba returns to home if the battery is low so it can charge. My Roomba (who I named Michael) does not. He just stays wherever the battery dies at. I have to pick him up and carry back to the charging dock. I do like the alerts I receive to my phone whenever the bin is full or this is some sort of issue.

    Zones...what?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This thing runs in what are called "Zones". What this apparently means is that it goes into 3 of the rooms in my house, leaves and then comes back 2 or 3 times each to finish the job. It will come into a room and only do a third of it. Later it will come back and do some more and then finally come back a third time to do the edges up against all the walls. It takes literally all day performing this process, running a while, going back to recharge and then doing some more. If I hadn't already used it so many times figuring this out, I would return it and maybe try a different brand.

On board camera with wifi -- no privacy

    Posted .

Vacuum works great on wood floors. Cleans multiple rooms well. Latest version of the app that controls Roomba requires user to link personal data to Roomba use, and will even link the data with Alexa. The Roomba uses a camera to guide itself and sends data back if it is connected to your local wifi network. No option to use the special features without allowing Roomba to send data unsecured to I-Robot. I contacted I- Robot customer support and they verified the data was being sent back. The customer support agent recommended I contact the corporate headquarters to find what if any protection and verification has been done to ensure the data I Robot does not sell is protected. The corporate office took a message and did not respond. If you have children or worried about privacy suggest getting a non- wifi enabled Roomba.

Was hesitant to spend this much, but with 2 grandkids and 4 cats this has made my life easier and my floor cleaner then I ever imagined. I do still have to sweep around litter box for fine pieces of litter but this does an amazing job on the cat hair. We have hardwood, carpet and vinyl and she works on all surfaces. She has a little bit of hard time rolling over bathroom rug, but she does it. I am happy I purchased.

Selected the Roomba 980 based on reviews and purchased one as a gift. It did such a great job, purchased another for ourselves. I had swept the house 2 days prior and couldn't believe the collection bin on the Roomba was full. I like the low profile, it can go under beds, tables and chairs. Easy to set up the app and very easy to use. This is a great product.

    Noisy and slow

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

We've had the 980 for 9 months. On the plus side, it will go under beds and some hard to reach spaces. On the minus side: 1) It has a loud, high pitched whine 2) It does not clean one area at a time. It will do part of one room, go down the hall to another, partly clean that room, go elsewhere and do the same thing ...... This means you have to wait all day to put chairs or other things back on the floor so you can use the room. 3) It, very literally, takes all day to clean. It vacuums for 35 minutes, recharges for 90 minutes, cleans for 35 minutes, recharges for 90 minutes...... (We have almost equal parts carpet and ceramic tile flooring.) 4) You can't assume it will clean your house while you're, say, at work, because the filter will need cleaning, it will get stuck, and sometimes it will quit in the middle of the floor instead of returning to the docking station for recharging. 5) It's very light weight cleaning. You definitely have to use a regular vacuum cleaner to get a deeper clean. The idea of a robot is nice, but consider another brand.
