The iRobot Roomba i5 Vacuum and Mop Combo is a great smart vacuum. It's suction is great for such a compact vacuum. After unboxing, I put the vacuum parts together. Make sure that you look underneath all of the cardboard for parts that you may have overlooked. I placed the base up against the baseboard making sure there were no obsticles that would prevent the iRobot from docking. I then downloaded the iRobot App from the Google Play Store. I installed the app, the app found the robot and it was ready to go. Using the robots Imprint Smart technology, I ran a map of the areas of my home that I wanted cleaned on a daily basis. This took a little while to complete. Using the app, I programmed the iRobot to clean only one room. I switched out the compart on the side of the vacuum. I used a regular floor diluted with water. When I finished mopping I emptied and cleaned then air dried for next use. It does a decent job mopping if you have light traffic throughout your home. Overall this iRobot i5 is a very good robot vacuum for a small uncluttered home. Would recommend.

    Tradeoffs with Combo Vacuum/Mopping Roomba

The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is a combination robot vacuum and mop. It allows one device to replace potentially two which seems like a great idea. One issue I've had with using a separate robot vacuum and mop is that vacuuming and mopping about 1500 sqft of space can take a long time to complete on just the vacuuming step alone and as you'd like to mop after the floor is vacuumed, the only good times were either starting later at night or on a day where everyone would be out of the house for most of the morning and afternoon. As a result, mopping did not happen as often. The robot itself looks pretty similar to other Roombas. The finish on this one is a bit different, perhaps to convey it also has the mopping capabilities. Looks, build, and finish-wise, it seems the same as other offerings from iRobot - well built and robust. This one comes with the standard flat charging base, a vacuum only bin, and a vacuum and mop bin. Setup is pretty straightforward and after charging it up you're good to go for the first of several mapping runs. Technically, you can have it vacuum/mop and map at the same time but if you want a map so you can isolate specific rooms to be worked on independently, doing mapping runs will help speed things up. For this i5, took 4 runs to get a map. I did three mapping and one vacuum/mop which went surprisingly faster than when I'd done vacuuming with the i3. I'd later figure out that the robot seems to spend less time with the vacuum/mop attachment versus the vacuum-only one which apparently turns on some additional dirt seeking features in addition to being compatible with the base that can vacuum out the robot (you need to manually empty the vacuum/mop bin yourself). This being said I'm still on the bit on the fence on the simultaneously vacuum and mop action. The mop is positioned so that it is in the "back" and so the floor is mopped after the vacuum hits it. But my past experience is that especially when it's been 3-4 days since last vacuum (house with 3 young kids), the Roombas really need their normal deep clean pass to do a good job before you'd want to follow with a mop. This one isn't' any quieter than the i3 so I'm still constrained to only running it when people are well asleep or out of the house. Part of wanting to map is that by splitting my main floor into three rooms, I could setup cleaning that would ensure a particular room could be completed in a given period where the robots were free to roam. So, with the vacuum/mop combo, cleaning the entire first floor in one pass running starting later at night is feasible - no complaints about the noise. The downside is there are areas that don't get that clean due to the mop just dragging debris that didn't get vacuumed up around. The behavior after mapping still needs improvement - the Roomba still wants to do some "exploring" at the boundaries of room if there's no actual barrier where you drew a wall. If you let that happen and it opens up into a larger room, then it will actually just clean that larger room. So I'm still needing to make sure I put up the baby gate (which we already had in place anyway) to help keep the Roomba from wandering into the pantry area. Long term, I think we'll see if this one lasts. On the one hand, I can potentially run it more often so the mop/dirt issue may go away - though it still requires a lot of prep work to ensure legos and other small toys aren't getting vacuumed up or jammed in the rollers. Not being able to have the base auto vacuum it to clean it is also a minor annoyance though the need to refill the tray with water or cleaning solution means there would always be that manual interaction with the Roomba. The app does let you know when things are getting full/low so perhaps those with smaller areas to clean can get by with only needing to interact every 3rd or 4th run.

Love iRobot. This roomba j5 is well made. The charging base comes with an attachable drip tray. You get an extra brush, mop pad and filter as well. You just use the velcro for the mop pad . Super easy to put on and remove. You can throw the pad to wash. Another cool feature is that you can adjust the height of the mop pad based on your floor. The charging base has a nice rubber grip on the bottom. The bin is easy to remove by pressing the eject button. On the bottom of the j5 you have the 1 spin brush and the 2 rollers picking up the debree from the floor. The suction power on the roomba j5 is very good. Don't be surprised if the top of the roomba is dirty, that just shows you how strong its agitating the debris from the floor. It's great for picking up pet hair. I did forget to mention the j5 has a camera and sensor in the front to get the layout of your home. The first time it was slow to map my floor this is normal. After it has mapped out the home it will clean better and faster. So dont get upset be patient for that first use. The app is nice too its made to be used on multiple floors. You can create your own keep out zones and name each room in your home. With that you can have it clean everything or certain rooms. You see pictures of areas it couldnt clean with that camera. You can even program that area to be permanent keep out zones or temporary ones. You get notifications from the app if anything is wrong. I can say the app is easy to use

This little vacuum was super easy getting up and running. The charge base is small and takes up little room. It is ready to go once it is charged, about an hour out of the box, and the mobile app installed. You even have the cool option of naming it anything you like in the app. Once you create and setup the account it is ready to go once charged. Initially, the vacuum will run a mapping routine of all your rooms. I was a little concerned at first because it was bumping into things frequently. Once completed, you can setup zones if you like. After mapping, it did a much better job of navigating and avoided obstacles well. It has a very bright headlight it uses to get a round. It does an excellent job of vacuuming. It has one rotating brush and and a small air filter in the dust pan. It comes with an extra replacement brush and filter as well. The dust pan holds a lot. Just be careful emptying because it has an open hole and you can accidentally dump everything if you are not careful. Moping does well also and the interchangeable head includes a mop head and drip pan to set it on while it dries. Just don't forget to remove the filter or you will have to replace it it gets wet. Overall, it does as good a job as most stick or regular vacuums.

great looking vacuum, it’s similar to their previous version, been using this on such a limited space for my experience because my middle floor has two different height that separate living room to kitchen area, it made sense to keep it on kitchen where most cooking gets done to it can clean all the way to the dining table space. I find irobot suction power to be alright. i’m not sure if it’s the type of wooded floor I recently got since we just got our floors done, but they don’t seems to get certain dust on a much deeper level than I would hope. I had their roomba before with the self emptying base and even that version they seems to have the same power suction, again i’m not a pro at vacuuming power level but from what i’ve been checking it does alright. I was hoping it will be a much better version of power but for my experience they felt about the same as the last. I love the rubberize track they have doesn’t seems to get stuck picking up hair of my wife. installing and program the vacuum is easy with the app. I do like roombas app I think it’s pretty simple. you can view the map of the space is at using the app. I never got any chance to emptying the battery of this since it’s only vacuuming a small space. but does help picking up pieces of rice on the floor. moping is alright it’s not something you should fully rely on in my option, but with this having that option is great. one thing I was making sure was to not mop any grease spills from cooking and I let it mop the floor when it just dust or regular small water spill. these vacuum are very smart, I tried by putting socks on the floor and overall detecting objects is none issue. beautiful looking vacuum and well build. j5 is issue to use so no complaints, it felt exactly like the previous roomba I own so i’m satisfied. it does sometimes get caught up on my dining tables carpet which ofcourse I end up removing the vacuum to its original location to start functioning properly again.

The iRobot Roomba Combo j5 Robot Vacuum & Mop – Graphite can clean floors and carpets or rugs pretty decently. To start using the iRobot Roomba Combo j5 Robot Vacuum & Mop – Graphite, I needed to install the iRobot Home App on my phone. I opened the side menu and selected “add your product.” Once added, I needed to scan the QR code and follow instructions to complete the setup. With the iRobot Home App, I can control scheduling a cleaning, give instructions on were to clean, were not to clean and were not to mop. I even have use of voice control through Alexa. The Roomba has artificial intelligence that grows with its use. It remembers the areas it previously cleaned and how dirty those areas were to maximize its cleaning potential. The iRobot Roomba Combo j5 Robot Vacuum & Mop – Graphite supposedly can identify and avoid obstacles in its path. My experience though was sometimes things in its path were pushed out of its way instead of going around them and sometimes debris might get missed. Dirt, dust and floor stains were scrubbed clean with the microfiber pads. The iRobot Roomba Combo j5 Robot Vacuum & Mop – Graphite cleaned each room with a wall to wall strategy all in a row. To begin the mopping function, I needed to change the interchangeable Roomba Combo vacuum Bin with its mopping pad. The AI within it detects carpets and avoids mopping them. Once the IRoomba is programmed through the app with all of the needs for vacuuming and mopping my home, I can sit back and relax to allow the iRoomba to clean smarter and smarter each time its AI learns more with each use.

There comes a time when companies that dominate space initially get surpassed. Most of the time, this is due to the inability to innovate and the reliance on the name to sell the products. That's what has happened to iRobot in recent years. They were once the leaders in robot vacuuming, but now, in 2023, many other brands out there perform better while having more features. iRobot still makes a serviceable robot vacuum. Don't get me wrong. They're far from being low quality. However, they should lean into the premium space more than the affordable. There are too many affordable, cheap vacuums out there. And this j5 unit, unfortunately, belongs in that tier. This robot is loud and doesn't pack the punch like I expected. The mapping feature is cumbersome in the beginning setup and runs. The mop feature doesn't mesh as well as other vacuums with the vacuuming. Some options will automatically know when there is carpet or rugs and avoid those while mopping. We've had versions of vacuums that work very well with this, but the iRobot has struggled with it the first few run-throughs. It may be because it needs to learn the house's layout, but again, many other vacuums can do this in one run-through. Let's start with what comes in the box. This version of the j5 does not come with the auto cleaner (that you can find for around $250). The package includes a j5 vacuum, charging station, filter, mopping pad, combo bin, brush with an extra drip tray, and a microfiber cloth. These are all standard for a robot vacuum priced at $350. This vacuum is priced at $350 but has an MSRP of $600. At $350, this is an average value, but I can't recommend it at $600. Far too many options have more features, better power, and an auto-empty charging base. My biggest frustration with robot vacuums is the constant emptying of the dustbin. If you have a dog for example, pet hair can accumulate quickly, and if the tray isn't large enough or you don't have an auto-empty charging stand, you'll have to empty the bin 1-2 each cleaning session. That defeats the purpose of the robot. I'd instead grab my stick vacuum and do a quick run-through, then take the bin out and empty it for it to complete a job. That's what you'll have to do with the j5. The dustbin is so tiny that I can only get through one entire session with it filling up. My current robot vacuum (not iRobot) has a much larger bin. We brought that one upstairs and kept the iRobot downstairs, but we may have to switch that setup due to the small bin. The positive thing about iRobot is its app. It's easy to use and feels very fleshed out and polished. Apps are generally more hit than miss for "robot" devices, but iRobot has created a fluid app that's easy to connect. However, that is the app itself and not necessarily a correlation with this particular vacuum. It'd be a great combo if you paired this app with one of iRobot's more premium offerings. But as great as the app is, the vacuum has to be just as good, and the j5 isn't at MSRP price. I can't recommend this model when there are many other brands and options that do more. If you're going to go with iRobot, I'd suggest getting one of their more premium offerings and avoid going standard at this price point. Their name alone doesn't add value that better features, a bigger dustbin, a quieter more powerful robot vacuum can.

This Vacuum is Impressive, but not at first!

When we first set up our Roomba Vacuum for the first 2 days we were not impressed. The vacuum seemed to have no rhyme or reason to how it was cleaning the house. We thought this was counterintuitive because the vacuum ran for almost 2 hours and just had sporadic coverage at best. We read that that the Robot was supposed to create a Smart Map, but it wasn’t until after the 3rd day did this map finally show up. Once the map was visible, we could define the different rooms as well as name each room. This was really starting to change the way we saw this. Once the Smart Map was created and all our rooms were set up, we started making favorites, such as kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom etc... This means now we had the option to just send the vacuum on a cleaning mission for just the room we wanted cleaned! It also meant we could start setting schedules for certain days of the week and for specific rooms we wanted cleaned on that day. Honestly, this is one of the coolest gadgets I own right now. It’s truly the future. Performance seems good. I would say it gets about 95% of the debris on the floor within the room it is cleaning. The Roomba i5 does a great job going under our TV stand and end tables. This has always been a struggle to get all the dust under these pieces of furniture because they are low to the ground and have a very small opening which the vacuum just slides right under. The first time we saw this we knew this was a good decision to get this vacuum. The Roomba also does a great job around the edges of a room or furniture. It hugs the corner while methodically sweeping and sucking up debris. Watching it do its this you just can’t help thinking to yourself, this is Awesome! The vacuum also does a great job transitioning from hard floors to carpets. It lifts itself up when it must roll over something or if it gets stuck. One tip I would say is to make sure you lift all wires and cords off the floor in a room where you’re going to have this cleaning. In our experience we never had it suck up a cord, but it has pulled a wire or two and you’re always nervous when it happens that something will get damaged. So, we just prepare the room quickly and then send it on its cleaning mission. The Roomba has been doing a great job so far and its nice to walk around and see the floors clean pretty much all the time now. We have a dog so the floors get dirty quickly on a daily basis, but not anymore! Some Negatives: • After the vacuum has created the smart map, you would think it wouldn’t go beyond the boundaries of the map, well that’s at least what we thought. There were two rooms which had a lot of obstacles and wires, and when we were creating the map, we kept those doors closed to those rooms in hopes of not being able to include them in the cleaning routines. Well to our surprise, even though those rooms are not on the map, if the doors are left open when cleaning a nearby room, the Roomba did make its way into those rooms, and we had to pick up and place it back outside of the room. I was kind of let down by this, but it’s a simple fix to just keep those doors closed when the vacuum is nearby. • Mopping is one of those things that seems really cool when you’re watching the promotional videos by Roomba, but in practice I feel it’s more of a hassle than a benefit. To use the mopping feature, you must switch out the dirt bin with the combo bin after you have filled it up with water, and somehow put barriers around ANY area rugs you might have to stop it from going over the rug with the wet mop pad. Note: This is also what the app tells you to do. This to me is a HUGE failure. How are you supposed to stop the Roomba from going over all your area rugs? We have them in almost every room in the house. That means the mopping feature is useless to us. We just can’t use it and I feel that iRobot SHOULD warn people that “there is no way to prevent the Roomba from going on your area rugs with a dirty wet mop pad” somewhere on the box or in the first sentence of the description for the Combo models. So, if you buy this for the mop feature, I would give it 2 stars. To be honest it doesn’t even MOP well in our experience. We did see it go over some dusty areas and it didn’t really do that well, so we will be using it just for the Vacuum feature in which it does a great job. So I’m going to wrap this up by saying if your looking for something to automatically vacuum your living space to keep everything 95% clean while your tending to other matters, I say it does an AMAZING JOB and to give it a try. The technology of it mapping out your home is really cool and we think you’re going to love it…..Just have some patience for the first couple of days.

    Newest Roomba/Braava combo.

I have owned four Roomba vacuums and 1 Braava mop. The setup of this Roomba took longer than any of the other machines I have owned. The process of registering the iRobot Roomba combo i5 was plagued with pitfalls, I had to retry a few times before it registered with the application. The mapping of the whole house (1537 square feet) took 3 tries and 8 hours to complete properly over 2 days. Once the mapping was completed, I named all the rooms and moved the walls to the proper location. The house is rectangular, but Roomba mapped it as an “L” shape mostly. Once the process was completed, I sent it to different rooms to vacuum. The vacuum went to each room and completed it properly. After switching to the mopping insert, I filled the reservoir with cleaning solution and ran it through a cycle. I had to refill the reservoir a few times. The fact that the Roomba vacuums as it mops is a plus. The mop portion will only get the light stuff, you will need to spot clean to get the tuff spots. This iRobot Roomba is small enough to go under all my furniture and tables. It still has the same problem as all the past Roomba’s and cleans the same area multiple times.
