    Cleaning "Magic"

I've owned a robotic vacuum cleaner from a different brand for several years, but I almost never use it anymore. It cleaned well enough, and it was novel for a while to have it work all on its own. However, it had completel unsophisticated navigation tech - all it seemed to do was blindly move until it hit something, and then change direction. If I wanted it to ignore certain rooms or hazards, I had to lay down special strips that it would recognize as a "fence." Since it took a while to clean up everyday messages (or fence them off), my wife and I just wound up vacuuming by hand anyway. The Roomba Combo j7+, on the other hand, is so much better, and so much more useful. The j7+ environment navigation capabilities are quite sophisticated. The Roomba built up an accurate floor plan from its first "mapping run" (where it doesn't do any cleaning, but rather just explores and maps its environment), and then it took just a few minutes of work in the iRobot mobile app to mark off the boundaries of each room. Now, we can tell it to clean specific rooms, and off it goes - no need to "fence" off rooms first. It's able to find a path between rooms, and only really bumps into walls and furniture as it tries to get right up to them for cleaning. It will even take pictures of obstacles it detects, so that we can review them later and help it learn how to handle them better in the future. Having a robotic vacuum that can also mop is a welcome feature for us too, since that's another household chore that it helps us with. Robotic vacuums don't seem to have quite the cleaning power of their manual cousins, and that does go for the mopping feature as well. However, they make up for it by being able to clean more frequently, since they don't require as much time from a human to do their work. Being able to both vacuum and mop frequently is a huge help (especially for us, since we have a young child sometimes spilling drops of sticky snacks that we do not notice). The Roomba has been very good at detecting carpets and rugs, and it cleverly stows the mop pad completely on top of the machine so that it can still vacuum these un-moppable areas. The reservoir for the mop cleaning solution is a bit smaller than ideal, as it doesn't seem to hold quite enough to complete a vacuum+mop job for all rooms on our main floor. Obviously, your experience may vary depending on how large your home is, and how much area is carpeted. The Roomba still requires a decently sized area clear of obstructions for its base station. The hardest part of the set-up for me was actually finding a good location for this (it's taller than the base station from my old robotic vacuum cleaner too). On the bright side, one base will cover both robotic vacuuming and mopping functions (separate devices would of course each require their own). The base for the Roomba "plus" models like this features a self-emptying capability for the vacuum cleaner dustbin. Not only is it a convenience to not have to remember to empty this, but it allows the Roomba to perform longer cleaning jobs without human intervention required. The base essentially has its own vacuum built in to suck the debris from the Roomba when it docks. This process is brief, but significantly louder than the Roomba itself. The loudness isn't generally a problem, but it might be a nifty feature for iRobot to add to allow the final emptying (after the cleaning job is done) to be be deferred. (For instance, if there's a young child napping within earshot.) The reservoir for the mop still must be filled by hand, though, so there's no benefit from the base station on that. My wife and I are pretty happy with how much of an improvement the Roomba Combo is over our old (and unused) robotic vacuum. We are pleased that it has both vacuum and mopping functions in a single device. The navigation is impressive, and the ability to easily define room boundaries makes it quite convenient to create cleaning jobs for any or all rooms on our main floor. We think you will also find this to be a great product.

This is a combination robot that will both mop and vacuum at the same time. The vacuum is a standard Roomba design, being short enough to get UNDER furniture (some other brands don’t do that). It has two small rollers in the center that rotate to pick up dirt combined with a weak vacuum. There is a rotating brush on the side that gets dirt from the edge into the center. Nothing much has changed since the earlier incarnations. But mopping is a new feature to me. There is a pad that sits under a curved flap on the top-rear of the unit. When mopping is required, the flap actually lifts up, swings around, and then nestles under the rear of the unit. This is a very slick design. Note that the unit came with two pads, so that you can use one while cleaning out the other pad. The vacuum operation is, as usual, quite good. The mopping performance is okay, but not spectacular. The robot itself is not that heavy, so it cannot “scrub” any dirt or stains away. The mopping should be considered to be closer in performance to a single pass with a “swiffer” in that it will gather any remaining dust or loose dirt. But anything that is dried on the floor that needs scrubbing, this unit will not really help that much. The unit came with a base. This works to charge the Roomba, as well as empty the dust container. So you only need to empty the dust out when the filter bag in the base gets full. The dust container on the robot also holds the cleaning solution for the mopping action, and it does not hold much. Depending on the size of your house, you might have to refill the cleaning solution daily. This kind of detracts from the hand-free nature of the base. It would have been much nicer to have a large storage of cleaning solution in the base, and have the robot itself top off its fluid supply from that. Perhaps in a future version. Previous generations of Roomba robots have not been able to identify pet “waste” and would happily smear it all over the house. This has happened to me. But this new generation features a front-facing camera (with a head light) that is supposed to identify doggie “land mines” and avoid. Them. So far it has actually found some items that diligently steered around them, but fortunately, they were not pet waste (so far). This feature seems to work as advertised, and should, when needed, save a very unpleasant task cleaning out the robot and the floor. Very nice. One other thing that I should mention is that Roomba has made their products easy for the owner to service. Every part on a Roomba that is likely to need constant cleaning is easy to remove, and it is easy to order any moving part that is prone to breakage. The two round rollers on the bottom are particularly fragile, being made of very soft rubber. They do tend to get tangled with anything long, such as ribbon, string, or some cat toys. These items can tear up the rollers, and so a spare set should always be on hand. The side spinning brush is also easily removable to clean out hair wrapped around the shaft, and also easily replaced. Even the drive motors can be replaced. It is VERY nice to have something that can be easily serviced without having to ship it off. Some other brands don’t offer replacement parts, meaning having to deal with a service center any time something breaks.

    Casual Mopping Only

TL;DR Version - The j7+ Combo is a good first attempt from iRobot, but it's not competitive with other Vac/Mop combo devices on the market nor is it a good value for the price. If you're committed to iRobot, wait for gen 2 or the s9 combo. I've been using the j7+ combo for about a week now, and it's a great 1st attempt at a combination device from iRobot, who used to be the leader in robot vacuums, but is falling behind the competition in design and features. It's the same as the "regular" j7 vacuum, with the self-emptying base, but modified to include a built-in mopping "arm" that automatically deploys a mop pad whenever it detects hard floors to mop, but "stows" the mopping pad on top of the j7 when it's on carpet. iRobot's design choice for the mopping "arm" seems clever in concept, but unfortunately, this means that the top of the j7 gets slightly damp and dirty from contact with the dirty mop pad, and the pad itself must be manually changed and washed after each use. Replacement/additional mop pads are not yet available from iRobot, and it also appears that the "drip nozzles" must also be periodically replaced at a cost of $15 each. Also, I noticed the j7's battery life is worse compared to my other robot vacuum and takes twice as long to vacuum (no mopping) the same area in my home (nearly twice as long). The longer cleaning time is likely because the j7 returns to it's base to recharge after only 35-40 minutes of cleaning, whereas my other vacuum can clean the same area in one charge cycle. Although the battery life was worse, the j7 does have better cleaning performance - my carpet "feels" cleaner after the j7 completes a cleaning cycle compared to my other robot vac. For mopping, don't expect the j7 to clean up any significant messes. The mopping performance is like using a Swiffer - not for heavy or sticky messes, more for general/light duty cleaning performance. Also, I'm not a fan of washing & replacing the mop pad after every time - I guess now that self-emptying bins are "common" it seems pretty spoiled to expect the mop pad to be self-cleaning as well (yet this is exactly what some of iRobot's competitors have done). The self-emptying bin is the same as the regular j7, and a slightly newer, more compact design from the s9 and i3 robots. But it's just as loud as the others - don't run this when you or anyone else is trying to sleep - it sounds like an airplane landing. From a value perspective, the j7 Combo is not a particularly good deal within the iRobot family. The j7+ combo costs more than buying the Braava mop & s9 combo pack ($1100 for the j7+ combo vs. $855 for the j7+ and Braava mop combo pack on iRobot.com), and you can get better mopping performance from the Braava. The j7+ combo is a better deal than other vac/mop devices from the competition though. Overall, this is a good first effort from iRobot, but if you're looking for a combination device and want to stay within the iRobot brand, I'd wait for the 2nd generation and for iRobot to release a self-empty and self-cleaning base.

    More vacuum than mop

The J7+ combo isn't the best Roomba but it's not bad. I was disappointed that they changed back to a circle chassis instead of the D from the S9. The circle did get around obstacles easier which was probably the driving factor. However it made it so that corners didn't get as clean. The spinning bristles didn't seem to help and they spun so fast they flung things like cereal away from the vacuum. I wish it had higher suction. I think this vacuum is suited for daily cleaning but you'll still need to pull out a bigger vacuum to get a deeper clean. It at least is quiet when it runs. The low profile allows it under furniture pretty good. I like the change in the base. Having it half as high and an area for an extra bag is convenient. The base is very load when it empties the bin though. Having the self empty bin is great. Obstacle avoidance is really good with having a camera in the front. As for the mopping piece of the vacuum I'm pretty disappointed. It works great at not getting the carpet wet by having the pad flip away. Getting a tile floor clean was a hard task for it though. Simple food drips didn't come up. I didn't even notice a difference after the mop ran. I think this is best suited for a wood floor that you just want to run a wet pad over to clean dust. It really needs to have spinning pads to be an effective mop for a kitchen. The vacuum was very good at determining different flooring. The iRobot app has a great interface. You could tell it if you wanted to do a vacuum only run or a mop and vacuum. Also you could set how much water to use running the mop. We have another Roomba that was in this space and it was simple to transfer the map over and save time not having the new vacuum recreate it.

I’m still getting used to the operation of this combo mop and vacuum but so far I like it. It runs out of solution quickly but I do have a good amount of wood floors that it is covering. When it runs out it doesn’t stop and let me refill, it just keeps vacuuming so unless I pay attention to my phone I don’t realize it’s not mopping.

Setup was easy and having the mopping ability is great. The cleaning solution sometimes leaves streaks on the floor. The battery sometimes dies as the mavhine can not make it back home but the previous one also did this sometimes.

This is my 2nd iRobot that I’ve purchased in the last 5 years. Bought it in November and had issues right away. It would not empty the bin. Called support and sent it in for repair. Siad it would take 7 to 10 days. At the 10 day mark, i emailed for a staus check, no reaponse. I sent numerous emails and i finally received a response saying they didi not have any updates. I called and spent several hours on the phone with no resolution. They ultimately said they are waiting for a new dock but have no idea when they will receive one to send me. I reqoa new unit and they refuse. I requested to speak to a supervisor and they said they eacalated it and a supervisor would contact me, its been a week and nothing. I called again to speak to a supervisor and customer service said that’s impossible and i have to wait for them to email me. Its been over 40 days. Horribke customer service, can’t believe Best Buy sells the brand

Loved this vacuum for 18 months. The first sign of an issue between error codes and/or connectivity issues, be prepared to toss it. Dont ever change your internet, internet password, or move. It will never work right again. After one year, the already useless warranty doesnt cover anything. If you dont mind buying a new ine everty year or two. Then proceed with purchase.

Buyer Stay Away - Stopped Working in 15 months

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased the product in May 2022, and it worked as per expectations for the first year. There were minor problems - the iOS app could use improvements, the smart maps would mess up the room boundaries, and one time, the j7 ended up butchering my headphone wires. This month, the unit stopped cleaning altogether. It shows me Error 2, which led me to clean and then replace all the brushes, and after too many back and forths with the customer care representative (and repeating the steps I already did), he recommended that the multi-surface rubber brushes be replaced. And since I was 3 months beyond the warranty period, I would have to purchase the replacement parts at my own cost. For an expensive robot vacuum (which iRobot touts as "premium"), it is not okay to stop working after 15 months. The customer care is horrible, too, and the responses come after more than 24 hours of waiting. The least iRobit could have done is to replace the faulty part (which may still not fix the issue). I will never purchase any iRobot product again and would advise people to stay away!
