Customers are saying
Customers value the Roomba i3 EVO's excellent cleaning performance and ease of use, frequently praising its strong suction and convenient app. However, some users find the robot's noise level and small dustbin to be drawbacks, while others have noted navigation inconsistencies. The mapping and pet hair removal features also receive positive feedback.

A Solid Mid-Range Roomba
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Roomba i3 is the company's newest offering, a part of the "i" series of vacuums that also includes the i7. As the name suggests, the i3 is the entry-level i series machine, while the i7 is (currently) the top dog, second only to Roomba's s9 in price and features. As the entry level i series robot, the Roomba i3 features the same powerful suction, battery life and compatibility with the auto-empty base as the i7, but does not feature the more advanced mapping abilities of its more expensive brethren. The i3 makes due with a more basic set of sensors, but is still designed to clean methodically in rows as opposed to the random bump navigation of cheaper machines. It is able to produce a map at the end of each cleaning job showing where it vacuumed, but you are not able to designate "no-go" zones or tell the i3 to clean specific areas as you can with the more advanced mapping features of the i7. So how does it work? Very well, in my opinion. Unpacking and setup was a breeze using Roomba's smart phone app, and charging time was relatively quick. As soon as you start the Roomba i3 it gets to cleaning in neat rows as advertised, adjusting as it encounters obstacles in its path. Instead of switching direction whenever it encounters an obstacle the i3 does its best to move around the obstruction and continue cleaning in a straight line. If something large enough blocks its cleaning path -- like a sofa or table it cannot fit under -- the i3 will try to find a way around the obstruction a few times before backing up and/or changing direction slightly. If it is then able to keep going it will do so until it finds a firm stopping point like a wall. It will then spin around and go back the other way, keeping itself lined up with the row it just cleaned. While the i3 doesn't have the advanced mapping cameras like the i7, I was pleasantly surprised it was able to remember where it had already cleaned not overlap itself endlessly. Working in my 1,000 square foot home with (I think) more funny angles and obstructions than most homes, the i3 was able to find open ground and try new cleaning paths after bumping its way around planter legs, tables and other obstacles. It overlapped itself a few times on its way to clean new areas of the house but time and time again it was able to continue cleaning without endlessly vacuuming the same area. It did struggle a bit with very thin-legged tables and chairs, but was able to free itself without my intervention. The only time it really got stuck was underneath a low table on a thick shag rug, and this only happened on one cleaning pass (the rest of the time it freed itself without my help). I was pleased to see it could find the edges of the room after a few tries and seemed to figure out it was up against a wall after trying to go around it like it would a table leg. After about 90 minutes of vacuuming Roomba ran out of charge and returned to its home base, where it charged itself fully and then continued vacuuming until it ran out of new areas to clean. I was surprised it remembered where it had already cleaned and continued trying to find new floor to vacuum. Every time I thought I was about to catch it cleaning half the room over again, it would stop, rotate, and set off in a new direction to try and clean some untouched corner or area under a bed or table that its neatly-mapped rows hadn't yet touched. After just over 3 hours total cleaning time (including stopping once to charge for 72 minutes, according to the app), the i3 decided it had cleaned enough and returned to home base to charge. According to the app, which records all cleaning events, it had vacuumed for a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes, cleaning 570 sq. ft. of floor. While imperfect, the map at the end represented a rough, but recognizable, outline of my home, with grey areas that lined up with furniture, cabinets, closets and other areas the vacuum couldn't reach. The app is fast and slick overall, with multiple scheduling options and smart home integrations. The robot is also able to send you notifications about cleaning, such as if it gets stuck or the bin is full. Neat! I was pleased to see the vacuum picked up plenty of cat hair and dirt, with only a few crumbs missed in the entire house. The advertised strong suction and dual brush rolls seemed to do a better job than another, cheaper robot vacuum I have used, and combined with the i3's meticulous row-by-row cleaning, this machine does a better job to my eye than the random "bump and change direction" cleaning method of cheaper vacuums. I only have a few minor complaints, none of which are enough to reduce my five-star rating. While powerful, the i3 is a little on the loud side; I would definitely take advantage of the scheduling options to have it vacuum when you're not home if you can. The i3 is smart enough to know when it's on carpet vs. bare floor and definitely kicked up the brushes to a higher speed on rugs, which I'm sure cleans better but is a little grating to the ears. I also noticed the i3 is a bit aggressive when it encounters an obstacle -- this little guy really does his best to keep cleaning in neat, orderly rows, and seemed to want to bulldoze right through immovable obstacles. While I didn't notice any damage to my chair legs or walls, the i3 has a few noticeable scuffs on the front after only a few days of use. I'm sure this is par for the course with most robot vacuums over time but I was a bit bummed to see scuffs on my brand new vacuum. All told, I'm really pleased with the i3's performance, and to me it's worth the price premium over a cheaper machine for two main reasons: (1) the meticulous mapping and neat cleaning row method, and (2) Roomba's reputation for reliable vacuums, easy reparability and large parts catalog. I appreciate the availability of the auto-empty base, virtual walls and replacement filters and brushes, should any of these become necessary. Overall, I highly recommend the Roomba i3 as a solid upgrade over a more basic machine. It offers noticeable improvements in cleaning performance and a basic mapping ability that should be more than enough for most homes. Add in Roomba's reputation for reliability, reparability, customer support and useful accessories and you can't go wrong with the Roomba i3.

Best Christmas Present Ever for my mom!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this last Christmas for my mom as her gift, I was so excited to get her something to help out around the house... and this did NOT disappoint. I set it up for her immediately and put it to work, and it's worth every penny. We have a golden retriever who lives there and this Roomba makes a BIG difference. There's significantly less hair, dust, and dirt everywhere. We move it all around our house (with leges and drop off, the Roomba can't vacuum everything at once) and it doesn't disappoint. My mother is 60 and isn't great with technology or new things, and she is even able to trouble shoot it if it has issues (which is rare for her). I HIGHLY recommend this model
