    Solid Robot Vac

I've been using a samsung powerbot for the past couple of years and the Roomba i3, which has fewer frills and is less expensive, blows the powerbot out of the water. We have a Golden Retriever so having a reliable robot vacuum that can run once a day is a huge help. You'll want to download the Roomba app before you set-up the robot. Unboxing the Roomba is an easy experience compared to others. It's well packaged but the unit itself isn't covered in plastic stickers you have to peel off and it's fully assembled and ready to go right out of the box. Pick a spot that has good Wi-Fi signal and isn't a tight, crowded space to plug in and set the base. You'll need to put the Roomba on the base to wake it up. Then use the app to complete the setup. The app itself is very easy to use and intuitive. After each cleaning it will show you a map of where it cleaned and where it couldn't get to. There is a setting in the app called Map Privacy where you can turn off this feature if you have privacy concerns. Overall, easy setup and app is simple with a clean interface. The i3 doesn't have all the lasers and cameras that higher end robot vacs have for super accurate mapping. It uses something called "Reactive sensor technology", which is probably a fancy way of saying it recognizes where it can't go when it bumps into something. However, unlike other robots that just bump around and clean at random, the i3 uses a technology to vacuum in neat lines and if it bumps into an object, it finds it's way around the object, then continues on the same line of cleaning on the other side. For example, we have an island in the kitchen. When it is traveling in a straight line, and it runs into the island, it finds it's way around the island and when it gets to the same point on the other side of the island, it turns and keeps going in that straight line. I've also noticed that after it does an area and figures out where the edges are, it goes back and does a quick pass so the edge brush can hit the edges. The round shape and size allow it to get into a lot of spaces our previous vac couldn't. It also has no problem going from hardwood to our area rug in the living room. The last vac couldn't get up onto the rug so we always had to pick it up and place it on the rug which was a hassle. The i3 figures out obstacles, gets itself unstuck by being able to rotate 360, and gets the job done. You can set it up so that it keeps going if the dust bin is full, or it will go back to the base and wait for you to empty it. Then it will return to the exact spot it stopped cleaning and finish the job. The Roomba will also make suggestions like running twice a day when it's allergy season or peak shedding time for your dog. You can also set the Roomba to run on a schedule, so you can run it while you're sleeping if you prefer. I can honestly say it's at least 50% quieter than the powerbot we've been using. If I'm upstairs, I often can't hear it downstairs unless it's near the bottom of the stairs. There are 3 buttons on the top of the robot (Home, Clean, Spot). The spot clean feature is if you spill something and just need that area cleaned up. Just place the robot in the middle of the mess and push the Spot button. The robot will clean that immediate area by going over it a couple of times. The fabric on the top of the Roomba is also a really nice departure from the shiny plastic that most vacs have that are dust magnets. It looks great and keeps the robot looking clean. The dust bin is easy to pop out and dump with the push of a button. If you have a dog or cat, make sure you pop off the filter and tap it a few times over the garbage can to keep it clean. Hitting it with some compressed air every now and then will probably add to the longevity of the filter but do not wash it or get it wet. The dust bin can be rinsed out by hand but the filter can not get wet. The Roomba i3 also integrates Google and Alexa. I have Google and after adding it to through the Google Home app, having the Roomba run is as easy as saying "Hey Google, tell Roomba to start cleaning". I personally love this feature because it means I don't have to go over and push the Clean button or pull out my phone, open the app, scroll down a little and tap on clean. Not that any of those options are huge inconveniences, but if I'm upstairs or don't have my phone right with me, it's a great feature to have. Overall, this is a great robot vac, especially at this price point for a Roomba. There are cheaper robot vacs out there but they might not have the integration, support and easy to get replacement parts that the Roomba brand carries. It does everything I want and it's simple to use. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a no frills, easy to use robot vacuum.

good if you don't have kids and pets

I read a lot about different models of roomba. I think i3 has the minimum technology to get the work done. It moves systematically so it cleans everywhere without missing any area. So, we scheduled it weekly to clean the house. BUT, we had some guests over for 2 weeks, we wanted the vacuum to clean only the dining room and kitchen daily, i3 is not able to do so. So, I had to use our manual vacuum. If you have kids or pets and need to clean specific areas (like dining room) more than other places like your home office, then you should get i7.

I'm not sure if mine is working correctly, or if it's malfunctioning... 1st thing, it doesn't move straight, it dog tracks sideways slightly as it moves forward. 2nd, it randomly just stops what it's working on and drives off into another room for a couple of passes, then it leaves that room and comes back and starts over. Sometimes it will vacuum the same area 5 or 6 times. Sometimes it will enter a room, go inside a few feet, then it turns around and goes somewhere else. The paths it chooses to move around make no sense to me at all. 3rd. It's hit or miss on weather it will clean close to the wall or not. In some spots it moves nice and slow along the wall and cleans pretty well, on another wall I have ran it 5 times, and it still hasn't cleaned up next to the wall. It did run by the wall at full speed once the first time it cleaned that room, and it hits the wall and turns around from time to time, but you can see the dust on the floor that is keeps missing, and you can see the little swirl marks in the dust where the spinning brush left small spirals, but that's it. In other areas the vacuum seems to work great. I also had a problem where when I came home from work the vacuum was sitting in the middle of the floor because it couldn't dock. The dock that I had placed next to the wall exactly like the manual instructed had been knocked sideways from where it was originally placed. I can only assume that the vacuum must've ran into it and knocked it out of place when it was cleaning. Overall I guess it works ok enough that if ran a few times a week it would keep the house clean. I guess I'll just have to clean all the edges myself to make sure they get done since the robot is hit or miss.

Aesthetics, it looks high tech with an upper cover that exudes quality & appears to be fabric, though it is molded. The weight is about 7.5 lbs, hence easily transportable by anyone to any area in the home. It is roughly 1 foot in diameter with a height of less than 4", so it can get to most anywhere dirt would accumulate. First step in using the i3 is to set it on its charging station for about 3 hours to be fully charged, and at the same time load the iRobot app. I used my iPhone and the app loaded quickly. Following the app instructions, my i3 was connected to my Wi-Fi network and paired with my iPhone in 3 minutes, and ready to test. I set barriers to contain the i3 to 2 rooms, and then I opened the iRobot app and clicked "Vacuum Everywhere." The beauty of the app is that you can schedule cleanings from anywhere , such as your car, office, etc. -- to run at the times/days you specified. You do not have to be home. The app enables you to start and stop the i3. The app also provides a display of everywhere it vacuumed. Though my house is mainly Apple prods, the iRobot can be set to run by voice command using Amazon's Alexa, or the Google Assistant. Performance: The suction is excellent and the i3 model did an excellent job on my tile, wood, and carpeted floors. I have area rugs, and the robot had no difficulty adjusting from wood or tile to rugs and back again. The wood floors were a concern as I didn't know if the wheels might leave scratches -- this vac was gentle and it did not leave any scratches. The robot battery life was a concern -- it should not have been! I used it first in my kitchen and family room (roughly 300 square feet). It ran for 51 minutes and finished the task extremely well. I then challenged the i3 with an area of about 600 square feet. It ran for 1 hour and 26 minutes non-stop before it returned home to the charging station, recharged (for approximately 1.5 hours), and then resumed where it had left off. When finished, I emptied the dirt collection bin of all debris -- very easy to empty as the bin releases from the vac with a touch on the release panel, and the bin empties with a touch on it's release button. The bin was close to max capacity, but not enough to trigger the red warning light that signals when the bin should be emptied. The bin also contains a filter that trapped extremely small particles. The filter is supposed to trap allergens, hence be replaced every 2 months. Features: You can tell the i3 to spot clean an area for extra cleaning, and the app says that new features are coming shortly to permit designating area that you want vacuumed. This is logical since after a bit the app will have mapped all your rooms or areas designated for cleaning (you may name areas). You can designate kitchen, master bedroom, etc. There are other features that may be had by buying the i3+ Roomba, e.g., a self emptying station with charger built in, however, that adds considerably to the price. I believe that iRobot has found a sweet spot via the plain i3 model pricing point. This is a superb vacuum for the money, and I strongly recommend it for anyone desiring clean vacuumed rooms with very little effort or time required.

I love my new Roomba i3! I replaced it with an older model and the new features & improvements are outstanding!! The i3 is so much quieter than my old one. I am able to still hear the TV while the Roomba is cleaning which was not possible with my old model. I also love that the i3 features a Bluetooth connection and I can control the unit via the Roomba app. The i3 has a sleek, clean look and I don’t mind it sitting out in the open. The main positive is it cleans extremely well!! I programmed it to run each day and I’m considering throwing my broom away! YES!! Go get one!

    Great Entry Level Roomba!

This is the 3rd Roomba I've owned and is a great entry level Roomba! The Roomba looks like a giant Echo Dot and is super cute, we have named it Greyford. Setup was easy and took less then a few minutes with your iphone. After initially charging I took it for a spin and noticed that the room detection of Roombas has gotten significantly better. I think having a cylinder base allows the roomba to not get stuck in certain areas like under chairs or in tight spots. The longer white brush on the front kicks out dirt and puts it in the path of the Roomba. The one thing I do think the Roomba is lacking compared to other models is the map feature. I have the s9+ and it has a feature that allows you to map the whole home and choose where you want the Roomba to clean. Obviously the price difference between the two means that there are going to be a few less features and I'm ok with that. The cool thing is that the Roomba is compatible with the s9+ base I have to empty the bin. It also can team up with the Braava Jet m6 to have a complete cleaning package. The Roomba does a great job of vacuuming! The i3 lets you know when the bin is full and does a great job of picking up debris and dust. I highly recommend this roomba if you want an entry level Wifi Connected Roomba. This is a great machine and I'm happy to have it in the family!

I'm delighted with the Roomba. I have two cats, one of which sheds little wads of fluff daily, and even though we don't wear shoes in the house, we somehow manage to end up with lots of detritus on the dark hardwood floor. I do have to empty the receptacle at least once during the cleaning cycle, but it only takes a few seconds. Occasionally the clean takes longer than expected, but if it becomes an issue I can just end the clean. Having no dust bunnies under my sofa is FANTASTIC, and the floors are clean enough now that anyone could drop by for a visit and I wouldn't be kicking myself for not vacuuming often enough. The i3 EVO was an excellent value for the cost. It has had no trouble with the fringe on one of our area rugs, and I appreciate how persistent the gizmo is when working around furniture. I have very long hair, but only once have I needed to clear it from the little sweeper brush (and that was because a broken rubber band was wrapped around it and the hair got tangled into it. No trouble at all with hair on the two rollers.

Most Frustrating Roomba I’ve ever owned

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

You’ll spend so much time troubleshooting and rebooting this vacuum that it will actually be quicker and less frustrating for you to just vacuum yourself. It can’t find its home base, it spends hours (approx 3.5 for 1,000 sqft in an open floor plan) recleaning areas it’s already vacuumed, misses other areas completely, gets stuck on everything. I have to fix an issue with it at least every 2 days.
