    Everything They Say It Is

I've had models of Roomba's for a while now and still have a few of them running around the house. However, this i8+ model with the cleaning bin is a huge game changer. We have a large living area on a single level that this thing can actually cover because it can empty itself partway through. The other models do a great job of cleaning, but when you have a dog that sheds that bin on the robot gets full pretty fast. Between the intelligent cleaning and the self-emptying bin, we have a solid solution. It has all the features you expect in a high quality robotic vacuum: 1. WiFi connectivity with scheduling. 2. Auto return to dock after cleaning. 3. Invisible walls if you need to stop it from cleaning areas. 4. Smart sensors to keep it from falling down stairs or over ledges. 5. Auto adjusting wheels to adjust to the flooring (goes from carpet to tile seamlessly). 6. Good suction to get pet hair and general dirt on the floor (wrappers, food crumbs, etc). 7. A good battery life so it can clean a large section without recharging. 8. Easy WiFi connecting with a smart, free app. All of those things are what you expect and this model certainly delivers it. However, this little thing excels by adding in these other features: 1. Smart mapping of the cleaning area (and it does a good job of accurately mapping). 2. Online adjustment of the map to identify rooms. 3. The self-emptying bin that clears the vacuum and stores waste in a removable bag. 4. Auto scheduling via the app that lets you specify not just when, but where to clean. I've always been a fan of robot vacuums, but this one is definitely the best I've experienced. Is it perfect, no. There are a two things that I wish were different. 1. The dock (and therefore the self-emptying bin) is large and doesn't just blend into the surroundings. Nobody is going to look past it even on a cursory glance. It is nice and black so it is not glaring, but it's still pretty big. I don't know how that could be improved and still provide the functionality. 2. The app is evolving but I found one issue with it. When it mapped the upper level of my home it did a great job over all. However, there are a couple points where it joined a hallway and a bathroom. No big deal, you can draw a barrier to identify something it didn't see. When I try to put that barrier on the map, it extends along an infinite line that might block out other parts of the room on accident and you cannot change how it does this. Therefore, it thinks a room with a connected bathroom and the hallway are one room and I cannot split it up otherwise. That's software and I know it can be modified. No, it can't climb stairs yet, but I think that'll be a large evolutionary step for iRobot. It does an entire floor, empties itself after (or during if necessary), knows the layout and goes around fixed furniture, and is always getting smarter. I can't ask for more than that!

An upgrade from the i7+ but at what cost?

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I previously had the i7+ and was happy to test out it’s newer sibling. The thing that stuck out the most to me (in terms of real world differences) were the longer run time and I didn’t miss having to constantly empty the small debris tray after every few runs. The app is easy enough to use to schedule run-times and setup “clean zones” and “keep out zones.“ You can also push cleaning jobs on demand at the tap of a button from the app. If you decide you don’t want to use the app, there’s a virtual barrier device (it looks like a mini modern cone) that you can setup to establish “keep out” zones too. Performance-wise, the i8+ performs great on bare floors. My i7+ had issues picking up some things - like paper shreddings and this one performs a little better. If you have carpet - the i8+ is not going to clean as thorough as a normal vacuum. My normal vacuum does a better, deeper clean and is able to pickup a lot that’s left behind by the i8+. I’d say the i8+ is great for a spot or surface clean, but you probably want to go behind it every so often to really get that dirt and particles that’s lodged deeper into your carpet. The two most noticed improvements to this model also have drawbacks. The longer battery life is likely related to them putting a larger battery inside, which means the charge time is longer. And the self-emptying dust bin, while ultra convenient also adds dirtbags to an already hefty list of parts that need to be replaced as part of the regular maintenance of this machine, including the brush rolls, side brush, HEPA filters and front caster wheels. The Roomba is easy enough to take apart when it comes to maintenance and swapping out parts that need to be replaced as part of scheduled maintenance. TLDR: great on bare floors. Not so much carpet. It has longer runtime than the i7+ but that comes with longer re-charge times. The self-emptying dust bin, while cool and convenient also makes this model more costly as there’s yet another part that needs replacement. If you have the i7+ I don’t think I would splurge (at retail price anyway) to upgrade but if caught it on sale maybe. And I wish they had done more to differentiate the models like add mopping to this one.

    Great Vacuum

This is a great robot vacuum. No ifs, no ands, no buts. The self empty chamber will hold up to 60 days without needing emptied. This is a HUGE upgrade over our previous robot. Emptying it daily almost felt like more of a chore than it should have been. A couple recommendations before your first full run. After you get fully charged, run the mapping program to map your house. This runs much quicker than running the vacuum in full suck mode to get the map created. Also this will keep it from sucking up any cords that it may have access to. After you get the map created, place your boundaries for no run zones and label your rooms, but only after the map is created. If you have a partial map stored and label or mark it, you have to import the new map from the most recent run. There are 3 included disposal bags and 2 spare filters. There is also a invisible wall. This is great for the first run as a straight wall. Or putting behind pet bowls or beds to create a no run zone that is circular. I can see this being pretty useful around Christmas so you don't have to create new zones for a month or so. When it auto empties, it sounds like a jet engine firing up. Don't be surprised by this. For at least 10 minutes after the empty happens, my dogs bark at the vacuum. The youngest will follow it thru the house barking at it every time it runs. The mapping is pretty accurate. The no zones are easy to set up, but I wish I could rotate them or have a free draw option, our house has some angles to the floor plan. The dual brush/rotor underneath gets very low to the ground, it thumps when doing the tiled areas of the house. Unlike some of the older vacs, this one will sweep in straight lines, then do the border. One of my wife pet peeves was when we had the older non mapping bot, it would go circular. She likes the straight lines especially on carpets. The drop sensor on this is much more refined than our old robot. The Persian style rugs we have would make the old vac think it was going to fall in a hole. This guy has no issues with them. All the upgrades are awesome with this vac.

Great So Far, but Time Will Tell

When there are so many alternatives for robot vacuums, iRobot will have outperform or be innovative to stay competitive. The i8 so far feels pretty solid and there are many things to like about the iRobot ecosystem. A lot of the functionality is driven by the iRobot app, so it is imperative that the app be easy to use. The setup process was extremely simple, no need to scan any QR codes or mess with internet settings. It connected seamlessly through Wi-Fi and the vacuum was ready to get to work. After a mapping run, you are able to let it just clean as usual, or customize the map to your heart's content on where the robot can or cannot go. Again, all of this is intuitive as the app was really easy to use. The vacuum can clean for about 90 minutes before it needs to charge, but it will resume cleaning after charging. It also takes about the same amount of time to charge up to full. For a ~650 sqft space, a cleaning session took about 3 hours with cleaning and charging. This can differ between each run though, as it can seemingly detect dirtier zones and will go through them more than once. It is not clearly stated how it decides to detect these zones, but it could be something that can break later and cause it to clean more than it has to. There is no setting to configure it, so one can hope that it will be available in the future. The auto empty does a good job, it grabs practically everything from the bin when done. As for the vacuuming part, it does about as good as the lower models. Compared to the i3 it's replacing, there doesn't seem to be much difference, which is basically what iRobot advertises on their site. Overall, it is an acceptable robot vacuum. The mobile app does a great job in enhancing the user experience, and the robot itself feels quite reliable. The price is a little hard to swallow, but depending on the needs you are trying to satisfy, it can be justified.

Having used robot vaccines in the past, I wanted to see if they have improved over time. It’s age to say that is the case with this product. From a cleaning standpoint it does a good job. We do have dogs and it may not be on par with a manual vaccum since you can target problem areas more. But as a supplemental cleaning method, it makes vacuuming easier. The best thing about this unit is the customizations through the app. The scheduling of automatic cleaning times works very well. Also, after running for two trips it maps the cleaning areas very well allowing you to set up custom cleaning schedules for areas that may need more cleaning. You don’t have to clean all areas. The emptying of the unit into the bag in the base works ver well. The only downside I can see is it is not meant to reuse the bags. You could manually empty the bags but it is a bit cumbersome and it clearly wasn’t meant for that. You need to purchase new bags. The unit comes with three and we have been through two cleanings on the same bag with probably one more left on this bag. Overall I am ver pleased with this cleaner and would recommend it.

I bought the robot vacuum with the understanding yea it might work but maybe a gimmick. Hey this thing really does work! I wish it did a little more but it does a good job. Its a little loud but not obnoxious. You set it up an forget about it. The app on the phone where you can set times an zones for cleaning its really something. I recommend these for everyone.

    Nice Upgrade

For background, I had the i7 Roomba that I did a review on a year or so back. This is a worthy upgrade. It has all the previous functions of the i7 but does most of them better. The battery life is much improved, going around 3-4 hours per cleaning before it has to recharge. The automatic dumping of the contents is a nice feature but is very loud when doing so. The learning of the home is not as sharp as previously. I do not get alerts for trouble areas like before and this machine has become stuck on some thicker rugs. Also, I did not receive text alerts when this happened, only to find it sitting on the rug when I returned home. I would get other alerts, job complete, etc, but not that one. Sometimes, the buttons on top would not function when attempting to manually send the roomba home, but not a big deal, I just open the app. Overall, this is nice upgrade and the cleaning is improved. It learns faster, cleans longer, has a better internet connection, but is still on the louder side. It does what we need it to do, which is spot clean the chosen areas. We have two dogs and this fills up quickly with dog hair. Oh, speaking of getting full quick, it doesn't always return home to empty its contents when full even though that is selected in the app. Frustrating. But, I would recommend this product

    Great robot vacuum

This robot vacuum is great. I have spots that it transitions well from a hard floor to carpet. I love that you can set it up so that you can have it clean up more messy areas thru out the week and then maybe everything on the weekend. You can access it as well from away to clean up as well. Like if you are out and about and have not vacuumed in a day or 2 and find out someone is coming over later, you can then go in the app and have it vacuum. I like that it has a dirt detect mode built in. If the vacuum detects an especially dirty spot, it will go into the dirt detect mode and go over that spot to do a more thorough clean of that spot. It has a small spinner brush that helps it to get corners and the edge. Initially it will take a while to clean as it maps out your house. Once that is done, it cleans a lot quicker and in a nice uniform way. There are a few things that I would have liked to see. First being a manual. It came with a quick start guide but that was it. You can go online to get one, But I still like to see one come with it. I would also have liked to see it bagless. I would not mind having to dump the container out over having to replace bags all the time. It does come with 4 bags but after that you will have to get more. I would also have liked to see it come with at least 2 of the dual wall barriers if not 3. This was something that I was not sure how it worked and had to look up to see. They are dual wall barriers as it has 2 modes for it. One is basically a straight line from the device that goes 10' and invisible. This is good if you have an area, you don't want this vacuum to go into but have no door. The dual mode can also get changed to a round area of 1'. This is great if you have pet dishes, you can place this between the food and water bowl, and it will keep the vacuum from entering that area. You can also place around a vase, or maybe even under a desk where you might have some cabling. It does have a spot vacuum mode, but this requires you to manually lift the vacuum up and place it in a spot and then you press a diamond looking button and it will spiral outward about 3' and then spiral back. This is something that I would love to see an option to manually control the vacuum and just clean myself how I want to, or control it to a spot, and then be able to press a spot button and have it spot clean and then have it return on its own instead of having to lift it and carry it to the spot. If you have this set up and connected with app, you can have it make a noise so you can find it. This can be handy if it gets stuck. If you have your house mapped out, it will tell you what room it is stuck in and then you can have it make a noise to find it in that room. It will let you know it got stuck, so you just go to it, help it out, and press a button and it will continue then. I do not own stairs at the moment, but it looks like it will detect the stair and then back away. I can't confirm how this does on that. Overall, it's a great vacuum, saves a lot of time and convenient. If you work, you can have it clean while away, or if you already cleaning, you can have this vacuum. Especially if you clean a room, then you can have this go to that room and vacuum while you move onto the next room. Just make sure you clean up everything off the ground. You can also pause this at any time. It is not that loud, but maybe if get a call and need it quiet. Or if someone comes over you can pause or stop and have it return back to its base. But overall, I am satisfied with this vacuum and recommend this vacuum if you are looking at robot vacuums.

Unboxing was simple. Just take out the dock/bin and plug it into the wall. Place the vacuum on the dock. Download the Irobot home app. Follow the prompts for setup which is simple in that you just enter your wireless password thru your phone and then it is installed. After that, you run your first job and it maps your home. This is where it improves over the previous version. I felt the mapping was more accurate and marked what was tile vs carpet. It did not get stuck as the previous version did. Also while they did not discuss it in the setup guide there was this wireless fence that I was able to set up that blocked a room we normally have a lot of loose items that get caught on like our office/gym. This was an easy way to get the floor vacuumed and make the Roomba skip it. After it is mapped, they guide you thru moving what it sees as rooms so you can set up zones in the house. Say you want to have it vacuumed after dinner in the kitchen. Then it will be per what you set up. I like that feature however the vacuum is still noisy and gets the dogs excited while we run it while at work. It would be nice to be able to have a silent mode even if it took longer to clean up while you were at work but not so loud it made the dogs think someone is in the house. Besides, it is the closest thing I have found that does all the work for you. I think the quality of pickup is good even with pets. Having to empty the bag once every 60 days is reasonable. The rest of the maintenance is easy, and parts are readily available. So far very impressed. I used Alexa to have it vacuum after dinner, and it worked as advertised, but something like this runs for a while so it is not an instant feeling when the voice command is given like when you ask her to turn it on say a light it gets the job done. I also was able to integrate this into my Google Home app so now I can start it from there. The only Cons are the noise when running and I wish there were more of those little digital fences to put around areas depending on what’s on the floor that day. It can be frustrating to come home and let it charge/finish when it gets stuck. Very functional smart product.

We have a variety of floors, hardwood, rug, tile. The iRobot does pretty good except for the transitions from one floor type to another because our thresholds are pretty bumpy. But we bought it just to tidy up the small things especially on the tile floor. The methodical way Roomba goes about its chore is amazing. It is a little noisy though especially in the kitchen but we just run it while we’re gone. It has gotten stuck once under the chairs and once on the rug fringe. We just arranged the chairs to keep it out.

    Roomba Could Be Better

Unboxing the Roomba was very simple and installing the Roomba was fairly easy. I thought it was going to be a long process and pleased to see it was not. The instructions are short and to the point which is how I like it! I downloaded the application as instructed and basically the Roomba can be controlled through the application. When it comes down to the charging unit it has to be kept in an area that it will not be disturbed in any way and against the wall. I like the fact that the Roomba can map out the room while it's cleaning the room for the first time. It's a great feature because it allows the Roomba to remember the layouts of each room in my home! Even if I change the furniture around the Roomba is able to adapt which also another great feature. Now, the reason why I feel that the Roomba could be better is because of the fact that it tends to miss certain things while cleaning. I have two small children who make messes all day long when eating I sweep my floor many many times while they are eating. I was excited to receive the Roomba to see how it will be helpful with my cleaning. However, it was disappointing to see that I still have to continuously sweep after using the Roomba because I saw on multiple times that there was still stuff on my floor and that was a bit disappointing. I was hoping the Roomba would put an end to my many sweeps a day nope still having to clean up even after the Roomba.

Having never owned a robot vacuum before, but seeing my friends and family members that have had different brands or models; I was pretty sure I was going to end up struggling to keep this thing 'unstuck' or working properly. Well, that couldn't have been further from the truth. After getting it unboxed and setup, which took no time at all. After that you just download and setup an app on your phone and away it goes mapping out the areas of the house. I was pretty amazed to watch it go around and not get stuck under the couch or other obscure furniture we have in the living room, but it mapped everything like a champ, backing out and turning around obstacles pretty quickly. After the mapping was done I setup zones (kitchen, entry way, bedrooms, living room etc and connected it to our Alexa device's and now everything is voice activated which is pretty sweet. The vacuum itself seems decent, it managed to pick up all our cat's hair that was on the floor after one pass, and as I would say 'combed' our carpet well, it also went over our tile floors in the kitchen with breeze picking up any crumbs that were around our cat's food bowls which is nice to not have to constantly do that manually. pros: Comes with pretty much everything you need to get started, also includes a few extra bags, and a device to mark out areas of the mapped zones to keep the robot from hitting certain areas. The phone app is very friendly to use to help setup the zones and schedules of vacuuming. Connects easily with Alexa, which makes it pretty neat to just say "Alexa, Vacuum the living room" or "Alexa, Tell iRobot to go home". When the wastebin on the device gets full, it will go back home and empty itself automatically, then resume. When it comes time to replace parts, it seems the price of most parts are very affordable. And so far it is pretty easy to perform maintenance on the unit. cons: Haven't found anything that I dislike about the vacuum so far. If I had to nitpick about anything it would be that the vacuum did not come w/ a manual, so you have to go online to look it up. There is a marking device that comes with the vacuum and not owning something like this before was left as a kind of mystery, until you download the manual and see what it does; I really had no idea what to think of that until I read about it. overall, This is a pretty awesome vacuum that I am very impressed by, it will help to keep our floor less dirty; Just by helping to keep our 3 long hair cat's hair off the floor alone will be a great accomplishment, as currently we vacuum up to 3 times a week w/our normal vacuum just to keep up with their shedding, also its nice that once the unit is all mapped out, it tends to vacuum in perfect straight lines which makes for a nice look at the end, which we really like. Honestly, If you are in the market for one of these types of robot vacuums, I would recommend giving the i8+ Roomba by iRobot a chance as we are loving ours currently.

Powerful machine. Literally picks everything up. My only gripe is the complexity of programming the unit when you have a large and somewhat intricate floor plan. Programming will take some work, but when successful, you’ll have a great vacuum. If you have a simple floor plan, this is an absolute must buy!!
