I think that you pretty much said it all. This adapter will plug into a HDMI port on your computer and connect to a VGA port on a monitor. It’s useful for connecting a newer computer to an older monitor.

The adapter worked with the Dell machine, but not with the HP machine. Both machines were running Windows 10. I couldn't get the 'correct' configuration on the HP machine to make it work with it, and am unsure whether this is an user error (more likely) or a hardware incompatibility (less likely).
