I was looking for a set of dumbbells that didn't take up a lot of space in my tiny workout room, so I was happy to find the Jaxjox Dumbbell Connect with 15 in1. I've tried other adjustable dumbbell systems over the years, but adding or removing weight was always a hassle. What impressed me about this system was that the adjustments were done digitally from 8-50 Lbs. with motorized bars located within the handles. Upon opening, you could see how well everything was situated inside the double-boxed packaging. It was fairly intuitive to set everything up and put the handles on charge. They don't come with chargers though, so you would have to either have a charger or get a plug-in outlet/USB splitter like I have. Connecting the dumbbells to the Jaxjox app on my iPhone XR was fast; I pushed one of the buttons on each base, the BT symbol appeared on the screens, then it found them right away and immediately connected them. A much better experience than when I connected my Android phone, where it found them immediately, but wouldn't connect until I opened BT connections and manually connected both. After registering and setting my goals and experience level, I was able to see the features and available classes for all Jaxjox products. Fortunately, I was able to select classes that only use the Dumbbell Connect units and got a look at the handful of trainers available and the types of workouts that were available. I tried out the subscription and set up a regimen on the calendar. My first workout was brutal and was considered a basic level at 45 minutes. I pushed the selector on the display to turn them on and connect to the app. I selected the weight from 8 to 14Lbs, a little motor sound for 2 seconds and it was ready. As you're doing the workout, it registers your reps, sets, cumulative weight, average wattage, and calories burned. The trainer video I chose was exuberant and fast paced. I had a little trouble keeping up with the weight change outs as setting the dumbbells down in the right position was more difficult than anticipated, especially a half hour into the workout. The right would go in correctly most of the time, the left would either not lock in on the right side or the left side causing the weight adjustments to not connect on one or both sides, forcing me to carefully put it back in position while removing one of the side weights, returning the weight back to zero then repositioning the weights and trying again. This happened 3 of the 6 times I changed the weight. I like the shape of the dumbbells, they look more like the traditional round shape and can be held more comfortably in varying positions. I like the large backlit displays and how legible the settings are. These dumbbells are like having a set of 15 in1, but utilizing only a fraction of the space. The app can record your workouts if you upgrade to use premium features, making these continually useful as part of your weight routine.

The idea of having an entire dumbbell set contained within a really small package alone is an awesome proposition, but then add in smart features to monitor your reps and calorie burn in real time and overlay that on top of a live workout is next level cool. I haven't really heard or seen of anything like this before and from the moment I opened the box I was excited. What's in the box: In the box you get two sets of weights that can be set from 6-50 lbs, two charging stands and two cables. Similar to the other JAx Jox products, a wall adapter is not included. Just like I said for the kettlebell I think this is an unacceptable omission for a product at this price range. Using the weights: It's really pretty simple and straightforward to use. You select the weigh you want (in 6 lbs increments) using the arrows on the base, or using the app (don't know why you'd do this, it's slower) and then the dumbbell will automatically adjust to the weight you selected. It happens really quick and gives an audible ding when it's ready to pickup, though I do have to mention that something happened during one of my workouts and the dumbbell got disconnected from the base and it took forever to get it reconnected to change the weight.. Using the weights felt very sturdy. I didn't feel like the plates were slipping or in danger of falling off. I even poked at the rod holding them in place and there was no way I was moving it. I felt very safe using these weights and don't think there is any danger of the plates falling off. I really like that they went with a textured metal handle as opposed to plastic like the kettlebell. It's easier to hold and doesn't slip when you get sweaty. THe overall feel is very sturdy and I think it will work well for a weight set. Though I would not drop it. The app: I have mixed feelings about the app. The smart features that connect to the dumbbell set to measure reps in real time is great. But, I found the exercises a bit lacking. The strength workouts were good (though a bit slow in pace). But, the cardio type workouts just were not very good. They were way to slow paced and didn't get my heart moving at all. I also really didn't like that the only option to watch the workout is via the app on my phone. They really need a TV app or chromecast or something to make this more useful. What I liked: The dumbells worked well, the smart tracking is really cool. What I didn't like: Lack of a charger, app only viewable on the phone, slow pace of the workouts. Overall, I think the dumbbells alone are incredible. I'd pass on the app workout subscription and just find other dumbbell workouts that work for you and use the app to track your sets only. If you are in the market for a pair of adjustable dumbbells, I'd really consider these.

Forewarning. This is HEAVY!! The box weighs at minimum 110lbs, which is awkward to carry, especially for its weight, so unless you’ve got help or are heavy into the gym, you’ll need help just getting this to your car or it’s resting place in your home. Out of the box, there’s nothing to write home about, no fancy packaging, just lots of weights. You have two bases, as pictured to set the weights on and adjust the weight, then the dumbbell and about twenty supporting weights. Each resting platform has a USB-C charging cable, but no A/C adapter. This was a strike against the product as you’re expected to plug in and charge these bases and either have to perpetually have two available USB wall adapters available at any point or switch off the charging between bases. For what it’s worth, once charged, the charge will seemingly last for a very long time. The base dumbbell is 8lbs and you can increase each weight up to 50lbs (which is TONS unless you’re nearly a competitive weight lifter). For comparison, I’m just shy of 6’, weigh 220lbs and am very athletic and can get a great workout with 38lbs on the weight, the incredible majority of people will use 8-26lbs here so don’t worry about needing much more weight. To change the amount of weight you’re using, you simply set the weights down on the platform. The platform has up/down buttons that automatically adjust the weight up and down in 6lb increments. You can hear the change of weight take place, which is very brief to say the least. It’s nice to have the automatic weight adjustment with the machine. There isn’t a rubber grip on the weight, it’s a traditional metal handle which sometimes can lead to calloused hands but these are so far smooth enough o avoid callouses yet still have a good grip. I would’ve preferred rubber but this is still better than most any other metal grip. Annoyingly, there’s an attached app. Every dang appliance or home accessory has an attached app nowadays and it’s honestly tiring. For me, this app doesn’t add much but your usage may vary. The app basically tracks workouts, which I can do in my head and isn’t rocket science. They have a paid addition at $13/month which is more expensive than a monthly membership at many gyms, which gives you access to workout videos. There’s a free 30 day trial, but again, you’d better off just skip this and watch some videos on YouTube instead. The app is far from necessary and adds little in my opinion. In conclusion, this is fine if you’re looking to lift weights at a base, but don’t expect much more than electronic dumbbells. From there, the results and workouts are largely up to you so get to lifting.

I have been using the JaxJox Dumbbell Connect for just over two weeks now. It is an interesting idea, but I can't figure out who exactly this is for. It is a well built and offers bluetooth controlled weight adjustment. It has fast adjustment up to 50lbs of maximum weight. I signed up for the 30 day trial of JaxJox premium service which includes video guided workout routines. What I quickly realized is that trying to execute many of these workouts while using your phone is difficult in many cases. The app will show you your repetitions while the video is being displayed which is great on the one hand, but often difficult to maintain sight of when performing workouts. I didn't feel there was a compelling enough number of workouts offered to warrant the subscription and cancelled. I have started doing my own workouts and using my phone to count the reps while I continue to count them myself. This allows for me to capture the data which does tie into Apple Health on iOS. If this could somehow tie into Apple Fitness+ I would be far more excited about the digital aspect of this weight set. The overall quality of the weights themselves seems great, but the fact that you have to keep the pair of dumbbells charged adds a certain inconvenience in placement. Battery life though does seem great so it may not be a big issue. As it stands for me now, it is nothing more than a connected set of free weights that I can use in a more conventional style, but can track the data. I keep my own log of what routines and reps I perform daily on the side. It would be nice if the app allowed me to enter my own routines and schedule so that I could better track what I am doing. I am only capturing the aggregate of my workouts which is great for the calorie count and total weight exercised, but little benefit beyond that. Clearly JaxJox wants you to buy into the premium subscriptions and use their workouts. Might be worth a try for those that are weight lifting novices or just plain curious. For advanced body builders this is probably not what you are looking for.

JaxJox - DumbbellConnect is an adjustable dumbbell pair that claims to be the first digital smart dumbbell. Jaxjox has the usual claims of innovation on their web site with buzz words/phrases like “ Say goodbye to manual weight selection” and “ AI-powered performance tracking.“ I’m sorry, but to me , this is reinventing the wheel. That is not to say some of the features that are unique has an appeal. Let’s take a look at features, function, benefits and the shortcomings. Build and design – JaxJox definitely did put together a nice-looking dumbbell. Build quality is also outstanding. The metal is sleek and well machine. They are well balanced and relatively small for the weight. The weights are designed to go into a plastic base. However, the base is not just to hold the dumbbells – it is an integral part of the JaxJox DumbbellConnect system. The base charges the dumbbells for Bluetooth communication and electronically changing the amount of weight. While it does work fine, I would have liked to see a daisy chain between the two bases for charging and including a charger would have been nice. The change in weight can be done from the base itself or through the app. Because there is mechanism built into the weights to accomplish the weight change, you have to be mindful of how you seat the weights. I do have some concerns about the long-term durability of the base, these are metal weights going into a plastic base. Even more concerning, there does not appear to be any mechanical way of adjusting the amount of weight so if the base goes bad or if the communication to the dumbbells goes bad, you will be out of luck. Its worth to note that there are quite a few 1 star reviews as well as some poor reviews on youtube. Most of them are ever months old and I am wondering if JaxJox made some changes because before I got to app, I did not have any issue whatsoever. Set up – The set initial set up was a breeze. I unboxed the bases, connected the USB C for charging and set the dumbbells in the bases. They connected themselves and I was able to adjust the weights in under minute. When I downloaded the app, it picked up on the dumbbells as I added them to the app. Very easy. The app – It was all downhill from hear. Truly an awful experience with the app. Confusing, does not go to full screen on an Ipad ( it appears they are concentrating on a mobile phone,) non- intuitive - really was a letdown. The dumbbells would disconnect from the app or would not react. There was a fair degree of latency for adjusting the weights. When the app does work, it does keep a wealth of metrics from your work out. You can tell that the whole point of the app is really to provide a Peloton like service for workouts. You can join a subscription service that provides different workouts and “ personalized insights throughout your fitness journey.” Guess what JaxJox, I hope you did some tight demographic research but I am the mind that you will have little participation in the subscription service. For me , I'm a 50 year old male that has been going to gyms for over 30 years. I dot want or need a digital training session. The Value – I have seen a few reviews that the unit is expensive for that you get. Yes it is in $500 but nearly is the competition and they are about the same price range. Honestly, I would not have batted an eye if it was $100 more. You get a lot of bang for your buck from JaxJox, Overall, the JaxJox DumbbellConnect is an excellent set of adjustable weights that are well made, look great and behave like traditional dumbbells. I have strong concerns about the long term durability of the mechanism inside the weights and the bases themselves. There are a lot of things to go wrong. However, that is all conjecture. What is not conjecture is the how bad the app is, it should have designed for the bigger screen of an Ipad and not be so buggy. It really has the disjointed feel of an unpolished app. In my opinion, they built a great product first and built the app second. The UI is not intuitive, so the UX is poor and the call to action is overwhelms the functionality. I am using those words specifically for JaxJox, programmers should be able to translate JaxJox, take heed – your customers are telling you something here. There are far too many reviews that echo my sentiment – fix your app; you already have a great product. I cannot really recommend the product because of the bad UI experience but the good news is that can be fixed in future iterations. The core of the product is good, now they just have to work on the rest. With all of this in mind, I am still giving it 3 stars. If the app was more mature and the connectivity issue was gone, it would have easily been a 5 star rating. You are almost there JaxJox, don’t put the cart behind the unfinished horse.

Nobody should buy these. They are over engineered - mechanically slow to adjust the weight, the weights don't fit properly into the slots and they're made of plastic. I used them for a week before the connection stopped functioning due to bent plastic. You're far better off with a non-electric adjustable dumbbell set.

    Great Weights, Meh App

The JAXJOX DumbbellConnect adjustable dumbbell pair is a solid weight set that try to add some technical advantages that tends to sadly fall short. Let's start with the weights themselves: * The weights are extremely well built. Solid, great construction and can stand up to heavy use. * The range of weight from 8 to 50 pounds (in 6 pound increments) is a great range. * The bottom side is flat which makes doing push ups very stable * The grip is very comfortable for extended use * The ability to change the weight is very simple when using the + or - button on each dumbbell stand * Each dumbbell is extremely balanced * The dumbbell stands must be charged (or plugged in) in order to adjust the weight as the mechanism is electronic. Will be interesting to see how long this lasts without failing as it will lead to inability to adjust weight. * The timeout on the base is too short. If you are trying to very quickly change weight as you work out, you have to wait about 5-10 seconds as the little screen wakes up and you can change the weight. Would be nice to have a little longer sleep time, especially if the bases are plugged in. Now for the companion app, where things get meh: * You have to create an account to use the app at all * Bluetooth was initially flaky in the initial setup resulting in having to reset the base station (which means removing all the weight as it is on the underside). Since the reset and second setup, bluetooth has been solid. * The app offers on-demand workout sessions, but most require a premium service. Some free trial classes would be nice * The app is supposed to track the stats with the weight, reps, etc. but fails miserably. No workout data being tracked in the app for me * Hopefully some of these issues can be fixed in future updates. Overall the weights themselves are top notch - 5 stars. Solidly built, well balanced, great symmetry (unlike most adjustable dumbbells). It's the issues with the app that causes the drop in rating. I recommend the dumbbells fully, but like me, be prepared to not utilize the app and just enjoy the dumbbells themselves.

    Dashing Modern Dumbbells

The JAXJOX dumbbells present well overall. These were delivered while I was at work and left at the front door. This created a hiccup for my wife, who arrived home before me as this set comes in ONE box, that weighs over 100 pounds (obviously, given two 50lb weights). One box, in which the product is elegantly packaged, to where I have saved the box for future move. The bases themselves are a plastic material, black with a green lined bottom. This I believe is a subtle presentation for a weight base. The weights themselves appear coated. This once again, creates a less forward presentation compared to metal weights. Overall, I would classify this as a modern take on weights. And with this modern base, and additional weights, comes one of the biggest selling points of this product – an at home adjustable dumbbell set. This ultimately gives 8 different weight option dumbbells, in an area taking up less than 2sq ft total. The dumbbell set up is simple. Place the individual weights into the base, and then the handle. There is a USB-C charger or the base/handle battery. The set comes with two charging cords, but the cord is USB-C to USB and neither of them come with a block to plug the USB end into. Honestly, one of my largest complaints is that this set assumes you have a block to plug the USB end into… or a direct outlet for the USB cable? Because you may be different… but I don’t have a computer beside where I want my dumbbell set. Seems silly, but that’s just added cost/inconvenience in my mind. Anyway, get the bases charged up, and good to go. Each handle weights 8lb (therefore minimum weight), and each individual weight weights 3lbs, so you may go up in increments of 6lbs up to 50lbs. Weight selection is simple, with side to side arrows, and weight is changed within a few seconds. Quite a streamline process to get going. The dumbbells have a metal handle, so keep this in mind if you have softer hands. This of course provides grasp, but may want gloves if you don’t want hard and callused hands. When using the weights, thus far, have had no issues. Has a smooth feel to them and not loud. I have noticed, overall, that with the coated material used, the weights seem like they are not as durable as if they were complete metal. Of course, there are electronics involved in this set, but I hope that over time there will not be degrading of the product itself. I would be scared to drop these weights… so, if you are an aggressive person or clumsy, I would avoid these. But, if you like a sleeker, modern look, don’t mind the color green, and don’t have rage issues, here we are. There is a JAXJOX app available for this product. I was able to quickly download this app to my iPhone. The app requires an account to be made, either with e-mail/password, apple, or g-mail. The app setup was quick, asking some basic personal questions and height/weight. The iPhone app was able to identify the set of weights, via Bluetooth, while the base was not “powered” on. This indicates to me that even while “off” the base is sending out a Bluetooth signal. This is fine, in my opinion, and allowed me to connect the app and phone without moving at that moment, and I appreciate that. The app itself, was a disappointment for me. I had assumed that, having an electronic weight set, you could adjust weight via the app. But no, that requires the base. The app will track your progress though, which that is lovely: tracking time, sets, recording weight, and predicted calorie burn. There are many intriguing classes available through the app, which at home can provide an extensive service. Having equipment (dumbbell, or for instance a bike) at home, will sometimes be overwhelming on how to adequately use them. That seems silly, but getting into exercise, when I thought dumbbell, I thought curl, and that would be it… rather there are a vast number of options and workouts, and the app can facilitate this knowledge. There is a schedule option available that allows pairing classes with certain days, even in advance. I see this as a strength of the app, to keep one motivated. The app currently requires a monthly subscription for the bulk majority of content. When having made a large investment, having a tacked on subscription can be frustrating, the flip side to that, is when work-out classes are involved, there is value in this subscription and those making the courses deserve to be paid for their time and dedication, what better to do that with a subscription. You would be paying for an in person trainer, so why not virtual options. I just become apprehensive adding on yet another life subscription in our world of recurrent payments. This may not be for everyone. Overall, this dumbbell set provides 8 different weight options bilaterally within a space efficient design taking up less than 4’ by 1’ space side by side (or 2’ by 2’ if one in front of the other) with quick start up and simple weight adjustability with up/down weight buttons. I was disappointed by the app, with multiple functions locked behind a subscription, with my only fear of this product, being durability. Ultimately, this set may not be for every person, requiring proper knowledge and understanding of the product you are investing in.
