We worked around the problem by going to the HDMI cable from the Apple TV to the sound bar. Now the sound bar works with the TV remote. Not sure what the problem was with the optical cable/JBL remote situation, but I guess it doesn't matter.

Not a great JBL product

It was the 3.1 sound bar system. Easy to set up, simple to operate, and nice features on the remote. Since purchasing that 3.1 system, I now have a 2nd JBL 3.1 sound bar, JBL LIVE650BTNC Wireless Headphones, a JBL Boombox, a JBL Extreme 2, and just bought four JBL car speakers. Needless to say, I’m a JBL fan. After speaking with a Best Buy salesman, who was extremely nice, he said without a question that thIs JBL 5.1 system was better than the JBL 3.1 system I bought about 18 months ago. NOT EVEN CLOSE. I returned this product after one day. This 3.1 system is the way to go if you’re a JBL fan. Don’t even think about this JBL 5.1 sound bar system, at least in my opinion. The only bass options that you have with this one is Low, Medium, and High, and they all sound very similar. On the JBL 3.1, you have a bass range of 0-30 from the identical subwoofer, giving you a lot to choose from in terms of bass. On this 5.1, there is no option of different sound modes like on the 3.1, where you have several to choose from (sports, music, movie, etc.) The overall sound quality is nowhere close to the 3.1, and I did my research and listened to just about everything I could sample. Not a great JBL product, I’m sorry to say. I had high expectations for this system after my positive experience with the 3.1 but this just didn’t deliver.
