Let me preface this by stating that I'm a man of a certain age that may not be the typical user of Bluetooth earbuds; however, I've been a convert from the moment I was introduced to them nearly a decade ago. In the ensuing years, I've owned numerous sets of high-end ear buds, both wired and Bluetooth. I don't think that there's a quality brand out there that I've not had the good fortune to enjoy. However, the JBL Free is my first experience with "wireless" Bluetooth.
In the past, the actual wire or manner of harnessing the Bluetooth earbuds has been one of my primary complaints. I hate the ones that have a sort of plastic neck-band that carries the actual wires and buds. If you recline, or lay on a bench to work out, the band balls back off your neck, and pulls the buds with it. While the ones with a simple cable that attaches the buds is more user friendly, it still has its flaws in being forever tangled up.
But, my #1 complaint about every set I've owned has been the fact that the little tiny buttons that they use to control them, are nearly impossible for me to feel with my clumsy fingers. And, it's not like I can hold them at arms' length to see the controls, because you need to have them in your ear to hear whether they’re off, on, searching, or pairing. Trying to adjust the volume generally ends up in having me ffwd to the next song.
The JBL free has eliminated my two must frustrating issues with Bluetooth earbuds. I no longer have the inconvenience of the band or wire, and the controls are large, you can actually feel them when you're in the ear, as well as SEE their status when out of your ear, via the little LED ring.
As for fit? I'm pleased. I've been able to secure a custom fit with the assortment of tips provided. Now, the biggie: Sound… OK, I'm not audiophile, but I appreciate good sound when listening to music. The JBL Free definitely delivers in that department. My taste in music is very eclectic, and I've yet to be disappointed. I admittedly don't make a lot of phone calls, so my experience with using them for actual phone conversations has been limited to less than a dozen calls. However, the majority of those calls have been to two different long-time (old) friends that complain about any advancements in technology, and would certainly delight in letting me know if they "couldn't hear me now." I've not mentioned to them that I'm using a headset, and they've not noticed. Oh, and I can definitely hear them.

After spending a few days with these wireless earbuds I found them to be good but not great.
JBL has a reputation for high quality audio products. I have a set of wireless noise canceling over ear headphones that are fantastic. These earbuds sound good and are convenient due to their portability and ability to charge on the go.
The only downside was that audio would drop from time to time. This can happen with any bluetooth device, but I experienced more of these instances than I am used to with other similar devices.
The comfort and audio quality help make up for the occasional sound drops, so I consider these earbuds to be a decent option. But you will certainly want to compare other products before you make your decision.

very susceptible to interference

The earbuds are compact and fit well with decent sound. The case is interesting in that it has no led indications on the outside; you view the status of charging through the semi-transparent cover. The main issue I have with them is that they're very susceptible to wireless interference. When that happens, the two earbuds have difficulty remaining in sync, and the sound cuts in and out. Truly wireless earbuds all experience this problem more than wired, Bluetooth earbuds, but this pair has more of a problem than other truly wireless earbuds I've tried. When they work, they work great, but there are too many occasions where they're useless because of interference.

I like these JBLs true wireless headphones. They are very easy to set up and pair up with my bluetooth devices. I really like the charging/carrying case that come with them. The sound is pretty good as well. The reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because sometimes the connection breaks up and they feel bulky in my ears. Overall, it is a pretty good product.

Poor sound when connectivity isn't already poor.

Short version: These are a terrible value, look elsewhere if you want real quality and longevity.
Long version:
The pros
- The case feels solid.
-comes with 3 sets of buds and 2 different covers for the whole earpiece.
-I've used them for working out, listening to music, and occasionally watching movies/tv, in those applications the battery life was just fine.
The cons
-The sound this set produces is mediocre at best. The bass response is lacking, the highs are overhyped making the bass even more insignificant.
-Connectivity between the left and right bud is dropped so often that it becomes a nuisance to the owner.
-In order to connect I need to pull the right bud out of the case, put it back in, then pull it out again for it to establish a connection. The repro rate on this is about 7/10 and is just unacceptable. I've reset the buds, forgotten the connection, restarting the devices I've hooked them up to, the whole nine yards, still nothing but disappointment in the connectivity department.
-These are the worst sounding headphones I have owned by far and the worst value. For what I paid I'd at least expect them to sound halfway decent.
Do yourself a favor and make sure you can return these before you even buy them. I've tried a 4 letter competitor...(bose, sony, who knows haha) for a little under twice the price of these and got what felt like 5 times the value, more secure fit, no obtrusive blue lights flashing, and much better sound quality. If you can't spend around 200, I really suggest looking into a wired set of headphones, or a wireless set with the cable & bar. These are a disgrace to the JBL name, and all the other reviews prove it.

Average headphones, poor connectivity

I would rate these as average sounding headphones - midrange bass. They fit well in my ear and don’t fall out, but just don’t sound amazing like I would hope for the price tag.
Further, the most glaring issue with these is the connectivity. These constantly disconnect from my iPhone. Until this is fixed, I would definitely advise staying away from these headphones.

JBL Free is not even 10 days old. Too bulky for ears. Left earphone is painful in my ear because of the way the sharp rectangular shaped part (around the audio) rests on the bony part of my ear. One earphone keeps checking out - both earphones won't stay connected at the same time for very long. Earphones no longer charging because case won't close; seems like something sprung. Will be returning to Best Buy this week. Very good sound WHEN they are working though.

JBL usually makes good headphones and Bluetooth speakers but these earbuds are bad. There are issues with the connection going in and out during music playback. I also had issues pairing with my Note 8 and iPhone 7 Plus consistently. I was hoping a firmware patch would fix some of the bugs but so far nothing. Right now AirPods are the best wireless earbuds by a mile and everyone else is still playing catch up. I was looking for an option besides AirPods that go inside my ear but I’ll be returning these ASAP.

Good Product...when they Work

I love the JBL brand. They have great wireless speakers and over the ear headphones. I was looking for a new set of wireless headphones to wear under my helmet when I go cruising on my motorcycle. These looked like they would fit the bill. I usually check out reviews on electronics before buying but I didn't this time...and I wish I had.
THE GOOD:
- Against other reviews, I love the sound quality. They are fantastic.
- Noise cancellation. They definitely do a great job of filtering out unwanted noise. I can still hear everything when they're in while riding but it's muted and makes for a more enjoyable ride.
- The look of them is sleek and great. Some complain about the glowing blue ring but I think it's a cool feature.
THE BAD:
- Battery life isn't the best. At only four hours charge and 20 hours in the case, it doesn't make for long road trips.
- The left ear bud connects to the right ear bud, not the phone so if there's any interference, and I mean ANY, between the ear buds it cuts out. It's annoying as all get out and makes for always a panic of whether or not your $100+ headphones are busted.
- For all the complications with these, the pricing is terrible. It seems like every review has the same complaint of the left ear bud cutting out and to me, that means JBL just put out a product without testing it completely.
CONCLUSION:
Although JBL is a great brand and makes stellar products, the first gen JBL Frees aren't worth the time or frustration. The sound is stupendous but not worth the annoyance of one of the earbuds working at only 40% of the time.

Its true what most reviews say. The technology it;s not there yet. The fact that you don't need cables its amazing. Nevertheless JBL should have stayed out of this for now. They seem very well constructed. They have ok volume, the pairing was easy, but the sound quality is horrible, not better than the jabra elites i tried before(at double the price). Most likely this are going to go back to the store. It's not a bad products its just not worth 170(taxes included). There is a very small lag when you watch video, the image and the sound don't sink. I did like how they fit and the fact they stay put in my ears.

I have these for a while now and not one connection issue. Once you get the correct ear tips in the sound is pretty darn good. Stay secure in the ear when running also. Always been a big fan of JBL products. No regrets on this purchase.

The earbuds are functional. Sound good, but has issues with the left earbud staying connected to the right one. If you like to only use 1 earbud, these are perfect. If you like to use BOTH earbuds, I would recommend looking at other options.

Bought this in store and the product really disappointed me which is why I HERE, to CREATE A BEST BUY ACCOUNT AND WRITE A REVIEW FOR IT.
Back to the topic, I really think this earbud SHOULDN'T COST $140 with tax, I used to be a FAN OF JBL, I have their Bluetooth speaker and the sound quality is just awesome. HOWEVER, this earbud is by far the worst I've EVER ENCOUNTERED!!! It's not even better than a Panasonic earbud you could get for $10 on Amazon, the left earbud ALWAYS get disconnected constantly. AND I DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS EARBUD IS DESIGNED!! If I use it the way their showed on the manual, the sound quality is just awful. If I do NOT follow the way they demonstrated, the sound quality will be MUCH BETTER but it would NOT stick on your ear, it will fall out quickly!
Anyway, this earbud is just the worst, look for something else please even the cheapest Panasonic earbud will be better than this.

Had mine since last Thursday; but didn’t get to use them until Sunday evening. Unfortunately when I went to use them again at work Monday, only one worked. Then I could not get them to connect the right way to charge. The instruction manual didn’t help either. Very surprised and disappointed as I love JBL electronics!

My son bought these for himself right when they came out. He was so excited. However, he quickly found that they had drop out issues so bad that he didnt want to keep them anymore so he gave them to me. I have tried using them and if your walking and your phone is in your pocket....the left ear bud goes out and back in every few minutes. Its really poor for the price that my son paid for these. At minimum....JBL should have offered all people who bought this pair of ear buds money off (good money) the upgraded Free X when they came out as apparently they do NOT have the same issue.

I have used these paired with a SanDisk Clip Sport Plus player and the sound is really great, the fit is better than expected, and the ease of connection is fiddly but okay. Major problem is they do not stay synced with each other or the device. It is really awful and I had expected JBL to be on top of this. I have used them at the gym for 4 months with the SanDisk in my pocket and it just isn't usable.
I will try to take them back for a trade up to something else, but am not hopeful...
