I’ve been playing with this speaker and Google Assistant for 2 days now, so far I am really liking it. Set up is quick and easy, just download the Google Home app, follow the instructions and you are good to go. I was able to get this to communicate with my smart thermostat and my Roomba and it has worked flawlessly with them both. I love being able to say “Hey Google” Set the thermostat to 70 degrees, and bam in just a few seconds my heater is on. So cool. I’m hoping to get more connected devices to work with this speaker sometime in the near future. I’ve had just a few issues communicating with Google Assistant, this only happens when something is playing and the volume is too high. I’ll have to yell loud orvaske 2-3 times before I can get a response. But this to me is not an issue and not something that I would hold against the device. The one issue I did have that caused me to take off 2 stars, is I cannot set up Google Payment. Every time I try I get a message, “An unexpected error has occurred, please try again later.” I’ve tried to find information on this error and have had no luck. I have Google Play and other Google Services that use my card with no issues, but Google home just won’t work. This for me is enough to not consider this as my permanent assistant. If this can’t be remedied. I will try another assistant as my permanent assistant. If you don’t need a way to pay from the device, I’d recommend this speaker without question. If being able to pay from this device is important, I’d look elsewhere. If I am able to find a fix for this issue I will certainly revisit my review and adjust accordingly.

Tested this out for the last few days and was impressed. Great sound, nice battery life. Simple to use. Definitely worth consideration if you’re looking for a nice speaker with a voice assistant associated with it.

This speaker sounds great and I love that I can control it by voice. In the first 20 minutes of playing music on it and playing with the Google Assistant I did experience some popping on the sound but after playing music on it for a bit the popping went away and the speaker sounds great.

Hands down the best portable speaker within a $200 price range. Excellent sound quality and very user friendly. The google voice feature is a great touch and enhances the JBL experience.

The JBL Link 20 is an extremely capable Bluetooth speaker, one of the (if not THE) best Google Home products, and IT CAN COME WITH YOU!!! Yes, you read that right! It is a fully wireless Bluetooth speaker AND Google Home Assistant! Great battery life, looks great in the open but small enough to be hidden away if you'd like, very light weight, and completely wireless! This speaker and it's built in Google Assistant can come with you where ever you may go around the house, from reciting recipes in the kitchen to playing music in the back yard perfectly! I would highly recommend it for those looking for a solid hub of their smart home experience!

    Link 20 just ok!

The link 20 is a good speaker with great sound. I find that when plugged in or on battery, the speaker turns off after a period off inactivity. have to get up and turn back on and wait about 1 minuet for it to connect. That defeats the purpose of having a google assistant speaker. when I am elsewhere in or outside of house sitting down, I want to be able to ask google assistant to do something like turn on lights or play a song. I can walk to light switch in same time as it takes to turn on link 20. Thats the charm off having a google home speaker, always listening for when you need it for something. understand it has portable battery, but should not turn off just to save battery. when plugged in it should always stay on. do not want to buy a google home for the always listening. ! speaker should do it all. do not want to have 2 speakers. Do not think many people will buy speaker when 3rd part companies have already started making battery basses for google home. I got it for battery and portability. will stick with a google home for now!

I love this speaker.. The Google Assistant is what tips the scale. Easy setup with my phone and im off saying “OK Google” ……. The fact that its portable is a real plus.. The garage, living room, bathroom/shower, etc.. I don’t need my phone nearby, just a wifi connection. “Ok Google” turn off/on blah blah.. play my music, whats the weather, whats my schedule etc.. awesome

The best Google Assistant Speaker under $100

I have a JBL Xtreme that is my go-to BT speaker. My only complaint is that it is not wifi-enabled and I can't cast to it (with out adding a chromecast audio). The Link 20 solves that problem. Sound quality is excellent (on par with a Charge 3) and build quality is great. Feels like it could take some abuse. I had it unboxed and up and running in a few minutes. Battery option is nice and I like that it charges via standard micro USB (although USB type C would be better). Although not an issue for me (I am using in a garage), the wifi light is permanently lit and cannot be turned off. Not great if you plan to use in a bedroom. Overall, I am not sure you can find a better Google Assistant speaker for the price.

Sounds good but serious quality control issues

I wanted to like this speaker; I really did. I own a Google home mini & love it. I tried the normal-sized Google Home since I wanted a second Google Assistant device with better sound quality, and, while that device worked brilliantly, the sound quality was a bit too muddy for me. The JBL seemed perfect as it retained most of the same features, and was portable as well. The sound quality of the Link 20 is brilliant as would be expected from JBL, but, after exchanging one Link 20 due to the random popping noise that others have described, only to find a completely different electrical problem with this second one, I just can't recommend it as there seems to be a legitimate issue with the way these things are designed/engineered. As stated before, the first speaker sounded great, but had constant popping during music playback, and the second speaker makes a very noticeable high pitched ringing sound whenever plugged in & charging. It's not really noticeable when actual music is playing, but any time it's not playing and the device is plugged in, the constant ringing is just too annoying to deal with. Again, I really wanted to like this device, but unfortunately, they're junk. They need some engineering fixes to take place.

    From Bad to Worse

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this speaker a little more than a year ago, and I can say unequivocally that it's the worst tech-based purchase I've ever made. And I bought a Zune (look it up, kids). I was generally OK with the speaker at first. Good sound (a little heavy on the bass), plenty loud, microphones picked up my voice well. But it turns out fragmentation isn't just a problem for Android phones. The updates consistently lagged WAY behind my other Google Home speakers, delaying basic features for weeks if not months. Even now, the speaker is three versions behind. And that wasn't even the worst of it. A couple months ago, the speaker started popping and clicking whenever I'd play ... well, anything. Podcasts, music, videos all were constantly accompanied by the unwelcome noise. It doesn't matter whether I'm casting to the device or connecting via Bluetooth, and the problem has only gotten worse over time. Even with the product being $100 cheaper than when I bought it, I cannot emphasize enough that this is not worth the money. Get a proper Google Home, slap a Loft battery base on it, and you'll be much, much better off in the long run.

    Sound is Amazing, but.....

For a wireless speaker its awesome. I bought it to be my main smart home hub, which it does a decent job except you can’t have continue’d conversation with it. Which if you have google home products you quickly learn that saying “ok google” for every command gets tiresome. If it were able to have continued conversation I would give it 5 stars!

Subtle popping noises even at moderate volume.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought two Link 20's and one Link 10 from two different Best Buy locations, and all three have the same problem. Regardless of audio type (spoken word, classical, etc.), casting audio to these speakers comes with a subtle, quiet, not noticeable popping noise similar to what you might expect if there was a loose wire in an internal speaker driver. None of the other Google Home or Amazon Echo devices in my house have this problem. In fact, other JBL Flip 4 speakers connected to my Echo Dots do not have this problem. The problem is specific to the Link 20 and Link 10 and appears to be a fundamental problem with the device's electronics. Do not buy this speaker. It is too expensive to sound this bad, and it is not clear how the popping will affect the overall longevity of the device. I love the idea of the device -- effectively a portable Google Home -- but the popping simply cannot be ignored. I returned all three that we purchased.

This has been such a complete disappointment. I have other chromecast enabled audio devices in my house and I love them. Some are near my wireless router, some are far, and everything works in harmony. Then I bought this JBL speaker. It will connect to my network once in maybe every five attempts. I thought putting it in the same room as the router would help. Still no good. Factory resets solve the problem for one or two uses, then back to no worky. The few times I have actually heard it play music, it sounds phenomenal...

I bought a few link series speakers to fill up my house sound is good but support is lacking. DO NOT BUY if you are going to put it in your bedroom. The ok google set alarm feature DOES NOT WORK. It hasn't since the end of January 2018. JBL says a fix won't arrive until the end of April 2018. Stick with google products like the home max to stay up to date with the latest firmware if google assistant is important to you.

At first, everything went well. But now connectivity is intermittent with Google voice saying, "Something went wrong." Searching online I see that this is a common problem. I would wait a few years for this technology to mature. I was so enchanted at first that I bought two of these. Now I am stuck with $400 worth of property that does not work half the time. I would get my money back now if I could.

Software is buggy. No google home updates

Starting about 2 months ago I have been unable to set any timers or use it for any sort of white noise. Any time I try to do these things it tells me there's an error and to try again later. From the first time I emailed support I've been told it would only be a week or two till a update is pushed out. If this is how long it takes them to fix a bug that breaks something we'll likely never see any new features that google puts out for their devices. If I could return this I would so save your self the hassle and stay away!

Poor Sound & Battery Charge Problems

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've had this speaker just over 1.5 years. Early on I had issues with it disconnecting from my network (constant flashing wifi light), pops and static when playing music with my iPhone or iPad. And then before it was 1 year old, after being fully charged, the battery only lasts 45 minutes. I really regret paying $215 dollars (at that time) for this poor quality speaker.
