Replacement for 15 year old Sony

The 4 stars is because my first unit lasted 1 week, then shorted out while not in use. The second unit has been working without any problems for 6 weeks, hopefully for a few more years. The only other issue I experienced it that it was a much tighter fit than my previous unit. I learned to lubricate the sides of the cabinets to facilitate mounting the unit. Now, I am delighted with the unit's operation. The steam sensor had prevented boil overs, and over cooking dinner plates with different ingredients. The popcorn button successfully cooks a serving from bulk popcorn in a silicone popper. The stove light is very bright, and the fan has three settings. There is a option to externally vent the fan, if your kitchen has a vent. There is a wire rack for heating multiple dishes, and the sensor can tell how many plates are in the oven. The vegetable button will toggle frozen, fresh and number of cups, and the potato button cooks potatoes much better than any unit I have used. One last comment, although 2 people are recommended for installation, I had no trouble mounting the unit by myself, a 50+ woman. I can recommend the Kitchenaid microwave as a reasonably priced over the stove unit for a family or singles.

DO NOT BUY-stopped working, warranty service awful

Well, I originally loved this microwave. Then the door stopped functioning correctly and the microwave was having issues due to the door not latching correctly. The microwave is still under warranty, so I contacted customer service, sent them what they needed, and over a week later no one got back to me. Then my microwave stopped working completely. So I again contacted customer service. Now I have no microwave. They can't get service out for a week. So, I wait the week. Then, the service guy tells me he needs to order parts, so it will be another week until then. However, he said a fuse went out, I don't think this is the issue, because the door would work and then not work... fuses don't go in and out. So, I have a feeling he will come next week and have to come out YET AGAIN. It's ridiculous. when this is over with, I will not have had a correctly functioning microwave for a month. DO NOT BUY -- or - Buy the geek squad protection so you can bring it to Best Buy to return it when it goes out.

    Very quiet!

This microwave is noticeably quieter than the premium model it replaced. It has a strange non stainless finish inside, I don’t know how it will hold up. Owners guide is basically useless, talks about “two level cooking” but doesn’t explain what they mean etc, no guides for sensor cooking etc. Keypad is backwards from several popular models, the start button is close to the door, while the cancel is at the outer edge (not normal for right handlers who rest hand against edge while thumbing buttons) and other slightly wonky design decisions. Light on bottom is not LED so you will be regularly replacing bulbs and the light timer is pointless, can’t schedule it as a night light. Handle is huge and easy to grasp but design only matches other appliances of same make, not generic. You can’t customize the loudness of the timer or the brightness of the display. Installation was standard but read first, the support is at the very bottom and this is a large unit, had to cut inches from my backsplash tile to mount it, not happy about that. Fan is powerful and has many settings including automatic on if too much heat from stove, it’ll scare you first time is goes to high by itself!

Very large capacity, shorter cooking times

Our prior microwave lasted - wait for it - 27 years. So we have pretty high expectations for any new one we chose. That said, our experience with this one so far has been excellent. Much higher cooking wattage is leading to significantly shorter times (e.g., a cup of water for tea that used to take 2 minutes is now done at 1:40, etc.). Very high capacity, almost "main" oven size interior. It's a bit louder than our prior microwave. It also comes out a bit more from the wall in front of the cabinetry - not a big deal visually, but what we've discovered is that it more completely covers the activity from the range below - so steam from boiling pots below is a more likely to accumulate on the bottom of the microwave. So you need to be a bit mindful of a quick wipe-down of the bottom in such cases after cooking on the range. In total, very impressed with our first month or so relying on it!

Replaced a 13 year old Panasonic microwave. Got this KitchenAid on sale after reading some really good reviews on line. The sale price seemed too good to pass up. Now that I've used it a few weeks, I am so happy I would even be willing to pay the suggested retail price from KitchenAid. The sensor buttons are amazing... I soften and melt butter, soften a half gallon of hard frozen ice cream to the perfect consistency, heat pizza, pop popcorn, bake potatoes, cook rice and everything has turned out like fresh oven-baked. It is super-quiet since most things I cook I do not use the fan. The fan is quieter than my last microwave. The only thing I would change is the light under the microwave to light up the oven underneath. It should be at the front of the underside, not at the back. Doesn't really light up my stove-top. I'd re-buy this item with no regrets!

    Nice but BIG

I installed this KitchenAid microwave about 4 months ago and have been happy with it so far. It is very quiet, which was important to me. We don't cook with it, but the everyday things like food re-heat, butter soften, bake potato, cook bacon, all work very well with a little trial and error. I installed the unit myself, instructions not the best, and the mounting template was only good for getting measurements, because the edge of the template did not coincide with the printed measurements, so you could not just tape it up and go. A good chance I was the problem, but no big issues, just took some time. The unit is much larger than I expected, this is the 1st over-the-range unit I have owned. We almost took it back, glad we didn't. On sale for under four hundred dollars it was a great deal.

I've had the microwave 3-4weeks now. I have nothing but positive things to say. Install was a breeze, instructions were clear and the included templates made everything extremely easy. Now how does she cook? So far to perfection. This replaced a 15-20yr old unit, which was rather unpredictable in its cooking, so it's not a fair comparison. We've used the microwave for daily items ranging from malt-o-meal to reheating steak filet's. It's done everything we've asked of it without any issue what so ever. Oh the Icecream mode that people speak of. It actually works...even with milk free icecream. (hey you never know, those silly almonds could complicate things). This silly microwave has all sorts of special modes and features that I've played with some. The sensor mode uses pure magic and for me has been flawless. I'm thrilled with this microwave.

This is an excellent microwave and I recommend it if you can get it on sale like I did. Personally, I feel it is overpriced at it's regular price. As with many microwaves, you will find that this model is the exact same as several other brands (Maytag, Whirlpool, etc.) all made by the same manufacturer, so you may find another brand much cheaper for basically the same microwave. The difference in price is the smart technology and features. As you increase smart technology and features, the price goes up. A cheaper microwave may burn your popcorn when using the popcorn setting. This microwave makes it perfectly with no burning. There are a few kernels left, but I would rather have a few left and nothing burnt. As far as longevity, time will tell. I've owned it for three months now. So far, I would recommend to a friend with no hesitation.

I bought this to replace a over-the-range microwave in our new condo that was not working. Taking the old unit out and preparing the site for the new unit was straight forward with the templates provided. Hanging it was also pretty simple. The unit looks great and functions well. It is a bit taller than the previous unit so it makes the range a bit harder to see at my height (6'4"). That is no fault of the unit, I should have plotted out the dimensions before buying. People have been asking what the inside looks like so I took a picture. It is a specked metallic grey.

    Does not heat evenly

The microwave looks nice and matches the other KitchenAid products we have, however this microwave does not heat evenly. All the heat is put to the center and does not "spread" out. Yes, it was the "cheaper" one, however our original 11 year old microwave worked better! It just was not stainless steel. When using the soften butter feature, it does not soften, it completely melts it and the butter separates. When heating food, the outer edges are not heated up, while the center section is burned. I am on hold with Geek Squad to see about a repair, however I have been on hold for over 10 minutes without any answer. Hopefully our microwave is just a lemon and gets fixed. But for now, I would look at a different model.

Bought this to replace a 10 year old Frigidaire that was a bit smaller. I like the way this looks and feels-the door feels solid and the interior has a nice finish. It is VERY quiet when cooking, and there have been no issues with cold and hot spots or spattering that were common when using our previous microwave. I disabled the extended "beepity beep" that sounds when food is done heating as it was kind of annoying to me. I've used the sensor cook option and it has worked well for heating frozen entrees. This is not the cheapest option out there, and it is a cut above the more utilitarian models I've had before.

Microwave only been installed a month, so not too much experience with it yet - & it will be some time to take advantage of its many features! So far, it's been great, though as stated, there are lots of cooking/defrosting/warming options yet to be put to use. This oven replaces a Samsung microwave that served us extremely well for about 6 yrs - util it just stopped! Followed Consumer Reports evaluation on ovens that contained all the features we loved on the Samsung, & this KitchenAid came out on top, though it's bit more costly than the Samsung was at the time. Hope in a year or so I can give this KitchenAid a 5-star review, but just don't have enough experience with it yet.

We love the non annoying sound signal when the food is done. Cooks all food thoroughly. The one downside is after a year and a half, the Microwave has developed an operating problem that requires service. It is hard to find and buy a product that has any kind of longevity before it needs a repairman. Most unfortunately. We thought the Kitchenaid brand name would escape any early product failures we've found in other brands. I guess no product is immune to failure within the first few years of service.

This is third kitchenaid microwave we have owned. Have downgraded a bit with this one because we have had browning and grilling capable as well as convection capable units before but never used these functions. Wife does like the interface on this unit as well as 16 sensor buttons. Last one had touch screen..This unit gave us a scare second day in use the display went out,the unit worked but no screen. Later that night came back on and not happened again. Also like the large dish.I notice the smaller wattage of 1000 compared to our last witch was 11000.Because of glitch with screen and lower power this unit gets 4 stars.

By far the best appliance purchase. Recommend help installing due to weight and placement but besides difficult install by yourself, very nice wave. The door closes smoothly and has all the features you can possibly imagine. The only negative thing I might say and likely more an issue of where we have stove in relation to wall, the wave light seems a little too far on back side. It lights well, but highest illumination is on stove controls. Not really a problem considering it's perfect aside from that. Heard evenly, versatile, multiple light & fan speed settings and I use the kitchen timer for everything. By far a much higher quality product. Sure wish I had purchased all my other appliances by Kitchenaid.

I replaced an old OTR microwave about 2 years ago with a fairly expensive Samsung. To my dismay the magnetron started to go after just 2 years. While the part was under warranty, the labor was not, and it was actually not worth it to fix. A salesman told me he recommended the Whirlpool family (Whirlpool, Maytag & Kitchenaid) over Samsung & LG. I debated between this model and a convection model and ultimately went with this one since I don't have much need for the other features. It was easy to install and so far it's doing well. I did purchase the extended warranty through Kitchenaid just in case anything happens like last time, but I'm hopeful this brand makes better appliances.

Microwave quit working after two years!

I bought this microwave after I replaced all my appliances with Kitchenaid appliances. Unfortunately I didn't buy the warranty as I've never had a microwave quit before so figured I didn't need it. I did buy the warranty on the refrigerator, dishwasher and ovens. I had a repairman out for the refrigerator and he said the sensors had probably gone bad. To replace them would cost $450! Unbelievable! To think I paid $519.97 for this microwave to quit in two years blows my mind! If you do buy this microwave, BUY A WARRANTY!!!

This is a really nice microwave and we loved it while it was working it fit in very well since we went with the whole kitchen aid line up. However, a little over a year of owning it we noticed sporadic issues with food not heating. I would unplug it for a min and plug it back in, that didn’t do it, I found that having to turn it on at a lower power would get it back to “normal” performance. About a week of doing that it just crapped out completely. Currently on hold with Best Buy regarding this issue. Fingers crossed it won’t be an uphill battle. I will give an update.

I have had this for less than a year, and the sensor for the door thinks the door is open when it is closed. Because of this it will not microwave. On random occasions it will work. If you want to heat something up you have to leave the door open until the light comes on (could be a minute, could be 3 hours) and then you can use it. It looks nice but the sensor is junk. I googled the problem and many people report the same thing. Within a year you would think someone would be willing to fix it

I love how quiet this thing is. I was a little shocked the first time we used it. As dumb as it is.....my favorite part of the microwave is the tone when it’s done. No more annoying microwave ding that they usually have. I no longer stop it at 1 second so I don’t have to hear it. Only down fall is that the handle gets pretty warm when using the burner directly below it. I have the matching double oven so it sits a tad bit higher than a regular oven but still within what they suggest for a minimum distance between the 2 and it still gets warm.
