To be honest, as a new dad this is amazing. 32gb of ram 1tb storage with the z1e chip it’s a beast of a handheld. I’m able to play AAA games with ease. And with the steamos suspend feature can pick up and play and put it back down without interruptions in gaming. In addition to having access to my full steam lobrary, emulators and more. I will also say that I had an issue when I got my first one new out of the box. It would randomly reset during different things. I spoke with Lenovo support and confirmed it was hardware malfunctions and when I came back to swap it out for another new one the staff was excellent and extremely understanding and took care of me right away. Overalls happy with the service, happy with the device for the price it’s well worth it.

Great* Steam Deck Alternative (Pre-Price Hike)

If you’re looking for a handheld pc that’s got a significantly higher power ceiling than the Steam Deck but price* is still a factor, the Go S Z1E is the option to beat overall. Z1E + 32GB of RAM at a reasonable price with every other aspect reaching at least “good” is a great value, with the notable exception of the relatively small battery. *: No, this is not worth anything remotely near the current $1580 asking price. I paid $700 for mine though, which is why my review is positive. Even at $900 it would have been a much more hesitant recommendation, $1580 is absolutely insane.

Steam os and the 8 inch screen is a game changer and i guess 32 Ram helps future proof the device.alsi this is the first PC handheld that doesn't need a grip case to increase economics unlike the rog ally x i would say battery life is annoying and steam os needs to work on adding fsr support in games that already should have fsr on Windows

Currently a Steam Deck OLED owner for almost two years. Been a very smooth & fun experience for me, was a primary console gamer. This was my first time seriously giving PC gaming a strong go. Decided on giving a good friend & his son a gift, SD OLED or Legion Go S w/SteamOS. Went with LeGo S for something different & I felt it was a decent bump up in specs. Just as smooth & very comfortable in the ergonomics. Weighs more then the SD OLED but well balanced in hand. Got a Dbrand Killswitch case for it, the owner(s) said it's a very comfortable case & appreciate the cover for minimal space in traveling. Fan noise can get going & track pad is almost useless. Pretty solid option, well worth looking into & finding a deal that suits...

[Employee of bestbuy] Owned about every current day handheld there is and this was the only one that fit my hands w/o any cramping due to slight carpal tunnel. Battery life could be better but this device ran any game I put it again easily (besides Ghostwire Tokyo where it wouldn't load at all). Airflow was amazing and kept it cool throughout playsession. Although for this being like a "upgrade" from the Steam Deck in a sense, the price leaves it hard to recommend especially with the Z2 Extreme chips coming out. If a Legion Go S 2 comes out or this one goes on sale, get it.

It ran pretty much everything with the right expectations, screen is 1200p but one of the best LCD screens ive seen on any product. SteamOS is extremely easy to work with, setting TDP and fps control with only one button anytime. Battery is a bit small because of portability but i always just plug it in and play anyway to preseve battery health.

This is a very nicely designed handheld. Before I start my my review, please note it is from a Steam Deck OLED 1TB owner's perspective. With that said... Pros: - Great ergonomics - feels awesome in the hands; comparable with Steam Deck except I prefer the symmetrical thumbsticks on the Steam Deck. To reach the right thumbstick my hand actually has to offset from full contact with the grip. The Steam Deck I can hold fully with no issues. I think one could eventually get used to the Legion Go over time though. - Great screen. Between this LCD and the Steam Deck OLED ... I couldn't really tell the difference in low light. But in brighter lights, the Steam Deck screen's anti-reflective coating wins hands down. By comparison, the Legion Go screen in the right angles can almost double as a mirror! Probably better to apply some kind of screen protector with anti-glare if expected to game a lot in brighter environments. Cons: - Trackpad - nigh unusable. Coming from a Steam Deck, it's puzzling why this is even there. Trying to use it like the Steam Deck track pads to move a mouse cursor is a futile effort. It doesn't move, then moves, then jumps too far; trying to move it back repeats the experience. Basically just no. - Performance out of the box; it's set to play games at its native resolution of 1080p, which basically negates any kind of improvement the Z1E chip is supposed to give over the Steam Deck APU. Quick tests for games such as Resident Evil 4 remake, Lies of P, and Warhammer Space Marine 2 did not produce any notable performance fps improvements over the Steam Deck that I had expected - maybe my expectations were too high? - Higher TDP made no difference that I could see (again no tweaks, just out of the box). I cranked it way up to 30W from 15W and *maybe* saw 1-2 fps improvement? Basically nothing. The bottleneck has got to be somewhere else I suppose, maybe some kind of memory bandwidth? Kind of a letdown if true, because then one would have paid for all this power for almost nothing. Neither pros nor cons, or just not enough info - I did end up getting really good performance vs. the Steam Deck but it took some tweaking. I installed LSFG and FSR4 plugins, and fixed the game resolution to 800p to match the Steam Deck and whoa, I was gaming at 100+ fps on Lies of P (Steam Deck could go from 80-90 with similar config). This is neither a pro nor a con because I felt if one was to spend the money for this but have to step down the native resolution, it's kind of a wash. But it's a way to get the performance for sure. - I read about other reports on battery life being particularly bad on this; but all my gaming sessions are very short, maybe 20 mins or so. Hence I didn't really have an issue on this one. All in all, if considering one of these at MSRP, I would probably advise one to get Steam Deck OLED (preferably a refurbished unit) for max value - install the LSFG and FSR4 plug ins and enjoy. If one could find an open box excellent for the price I got it, maybe an argument could be made if one isn't expected to try navigating SteamOS desktop mode with that unusable trackpad. Then it's also a great device. Hope this helps folks who are on the fence! If one already has a Steam Deck OLED, it's probably a good guess by now my advice would be to keep that and wait for more advancements like Intel's recently announced Panther-lake chips to make it into handhelds and see.

The screen is pretty good and the sticks, bumpers, and triggers feel great, even if it is not very comfortable to hold overall. I love having a Steam OS option, but it was not carefully integrated. For example you have to use third party plugins to control the LEDs and they don't work right when switching to desktop mode. Biggest complaints are severely inadequate battery capacity, loud fan noise, completely useless trackpad, lack of a case, and the speakers aren't very great. I still use it over my steam deck but the steam deck is honestly a much better thought out and executed product in many ways. The only thing this really has over it is a higher resolution. But it feels more like trying to cram a computer into your hands in a rush than a console optimized for portable gaming.

Stellar Handheld Gaming Experience with the Legion

I recently picked up the Legion Go S 8” 120Hz Gaming Handheld with the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, running SteamOS, 32GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD. As someone who’s been diving into portable gaming, this device has quickly become my go-to for on-the-go sessions. Here’s why I’m absolutely thrilled with it: First off, the fact that it runs SteamOS out of the box is a game-changer. Unlike Windows-based handhelds that can feel bloated and clunky, SteamOS is sleek, lightweight, and laser-focused on gaming. It’s built on Linux, which means it boots up in seconds without all the unnecessary background processes that drain battery life on Windows devices. Updates are seamless and handled directly through Steam—no dealing with intrusive Windows updates or antivirus pop-ups mid-game. Plus, the integration with my Steam library is flawless; everything just works without needing to tweak settings or install extra drivers. If you’ve ever fought with Windows on a handheld for controller mapping or performance optimization, SteamOS eliminates that hassle entirely, delivering a console-like experience that’s optimized for efficiency and immersion. Portability is another huge win. At just 8 inches, it’s compact enough to slip into my backpack without feeling bulky, making it perfect for travel, commutes, or lounging on the couch. The ergonomics are spot-on—the detachable controllers feel natural in hand, with responsive buttons and joysticks that don’t cramp up during long play sessions. And let’s talk about that purple color; it’s a vibrant, eye-catching Steam edition hue that stands out from the usual black or gray gadgets. It adds a fun, personalized touch without being over-the-top. Performance-wise, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme handles demanding titles smoothly on the 120Hz display, and with 1TB of storage, I’ve got plenty of room for my library. Boot times are lightning-fast, often ready in under 10 seconds, which means I can jump right into games without waiting around. Overall, if you’re in the market for a powerful, user-friendly handheld that prioritizes gaming purity over general computing, the Legion Go S is a fantastic choice. Highly recommend it—it’s elevated my portable gaming experience to the next level!

This is the current best SteamOS device by far, the screen is excellent, the size is manageable, and the power of the Z1E is incredible without windows holding it back. All that said battery life is lackluster at best bad at worst and Lenovo makes a lot of poor design choices with their devices. Going into sleep mode leaves the power button flashing infinitely. You have to take off buttons and find hidden screws to change the storage or unplug certain elements to reach others. And it’s sooooo expensive. It’s a solid device that just has a ton of small issues that can really add up into big problems for some

Very good quality especially with ram prices at the moment 32 gb is nothing to scoff at, will replace my aging steamdeck lcd that is starting to have battery issues. Feels good in hands and battery life isnt to much a issue if you set to low power mode and play more light fare games if ya want it to last a long time but really just keep your expectations on the kinda game your playing and performance mode and you can guesstimate how long you will have

This thing is amazing. As someone who owns both the steam deck and oled, this thing blows them out of the water. 32 gb of ram and the z1 extreme chip is a powerful upgrade. The higher resolution makes every game look so smooth and detailed. I can play most of my games at high settings and get 40-60 fps sometimes even up to 70-80. For Indie games and well optimized games I get 120 fps! If you are used to playing on a steam deck this is a massive upgrade. And the steamos option makes this handheld even better! I can’t wait for the oled version to come out. Lenovo is the future of handheld pc gaming!

I'm very happy I chose the legion go s over a laptop. The only downside of it is the battery life but I knew that before purchasing. The unit that I got was defective and crashed a lot but BestBuy replaced it with no hassle within their two week return window. The crashing is most likely defective memory. The replacement works perfectly and I have not had any issues with it. Honestly it's the best pc gaming experience outside of a big desktop pc.

      Hi WALTER-

Thank you for choosing Lenovo and sharing your experience with us. While we are disappointed to hear that you encountered issues with the first Legion Go S, we are happy to hear that the second Legion Go S has met your expectations. We aim to offer great user experience and would like to recommend a few actions to improve your battery life.

The Legion Go S can also adjust the active performance profile and fan speed of the device based on your needs. To start press the hexagonal options key located on the right controller, then select the performance tab represented by the rocket ship, from here you can adjust the performance mode based on your needs. We suggest using Quiet Mode which will extend the battery life of the Legion Go S.

From this menu you can also adjust the display resolution and refresh rate of the display. We suggest lowering the resolution and refresh rate, when possible, to extend your battery life.

If you're looking to get into handheld gaming like I was I think this is the best option for performance, comfortability, and ease of use while still being able to tinker with it and enjoy messing with settings and performance. I would only get when it is on a sale though at I think 800-900 is too expensive with the screen not being OLED. The 8 inch LCD is still a really nice screen though. I got mine for black Friday for 650 and so happy.
