The speaker is quite loud. The microphone catches the voice commands easily from across a large room. The Google Assistant works very well. The photo frame function (through Google Photos) is excellent. Though the smart display can stand in portrait orientation, it is not designed to work like that (the only exception, according to documentation, is Google Duo call function that will work in the portrait orientation); so buy it with the understanding that it must be used in landscape orientation.
