Affordable laptop, and solid machine
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. But after a week I updated everything in the settings as instructed and it runs great now. No lag and the internet works great video quality is a solid B- but the computer was only 250 so it’s enough for me. It downloads and plays flash games easily and YouTube and Netflix works great with speed. P.S. I was disappointed with the laptop at first but then I found the settings where I needed to make like 7 updates and after about 2 hours of updates it runs great

Severely Underpowered Windows Laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Lenovo Ideapad 1 is a 14.1 inch laptop with a grey plastic clamshell with the keyboard and back of the screen covered with a smooth silver finish. It conveys a business look while still giving a sense of ruggedness. Indeed, this held up to being tossed into a bag that was itself tossed into the backseat of our car and being stepped on when it wasn't noticed that it had slipped out of the bag and was laying on the rear floor mat. The laptop was surprisingly weighty for one with just a celeron processor and eMMC memory. It feels solid, like a regular laptop and boots into Windows. But after the initial setup process and connecting it to my wifi network which serves up my connection to gigabit internet services, a lot of flaws made themselves painstainkenly obvious. The first you'd notice is charging. For a laptop this size, in 2023, one would expect to be able to charge over USB-C. That's not the case here - you're using a power adapter with a barrel DC jack. It's a subtle thing, but a bit annoying that I couldn't just grab any one of the many USB-C cables plugged in around my house and actually had to fully unbox the Ideapad. Next, the browser is incredibly slow to load webpages. I checked several times with different laptops and my phone side by side - when navigating to a new website, the Ideapad is painfully slow, often seeming to do nothing while it load the page. Once pages are loaded, interaction seems to go well. I'm in fact writing this review using the Ideapad and this experience is fine. But getting to this page, that was painful. Maybe 20 years ago, this would not have been out of the ordinary. And to be fair, the last time I intentionally got a device with a celeron processor was about 20 years ago. But as it is, the behavior of the laptop in the present day makes it hard to use for general surfacing where you might open multiple tabs. And yes, don't actually do that. Because if one tab was slow enough, two was even worse. The 4GB of RAM must not be adequate to support any sort of multitasking. The second tab was often not loaded and waiting to be used when you switched over and this behavior carried out to almost any other interaction where you'd attempt to run two different things. Any two apps being open simultanouesly dramatically reduced the performance of the active one, assuming you used the in windowed mode. Or just things ran slowly if you had both in the foreground splitting the screen. I started thinking this could be a lightweight laptop with all day battery life that could be used for light web surfacing tasks in the living room where I'd want a full keyboard interface rather than twiddling thumbs on my phone. But after about 20 minutes of use, I had to give up. My phone is much better and frankly, I'm not even sure I'd want to give this laptop as-is to my kids to use. I feel they'd find the unpredictable slowness even more frustrating. I at least grew up through the period where computers had an actual excuse for sluggish performance. Assuming you could get past the issues with loading pages or apps and your use case is effectively just doing one thing at a time, the Ideapad still falls short in a couple areas. While the screen is decently bright, the DPI isn't that great. It's just not a sharp display and the color reproduction is muted, perhaps biased a bit more towards the blue side of the spectrum. Sound quality from the speakers wasn't good either. Pretty basic, a lot of vibration within the frame of the laptop, one's just better off using the headphone output. What this laptop gets right are inputs and outputs (two regular USB connectors, one USB-C, HDMI, and SD card - plus the previously mentioned headphone out) and the keyboard. The keyboard is well spaced, has surprisingly good travel and feel, and generally was pretty nice to use writing this review and throughout the other things I was doing putting the laptop through it's paces. I could see this being great for someone doing a lot of writing - you load up Word or whatever you're going to use and once that happens go to town, maybe very intermittently looking up a thing or two in a web browser, then continuing on. I suspect as a chromebook, this would do pretty well and I'm hopeful I can complete the conversion soon.

Affordable but you get what you pay for
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Creating an affordable laptop is a challenge. Especially in the $150 price range, choosing the components can be a hit and a miss. Lenovo decided to tackle this challenge and release the Lenovo Ideapad 1 14”, running Windows 11 S, a slim version of the OS which is made for low cost and reduced power laptops and tablets. The result is a mixed bag marred by odd choices. For starters, make sure you understand what you get yourself into if you pick this PC. The processor is a Celeron N4020, a dual core, dual thread CPU which runs at a base frequency of 1.1 GHz and a boost speed of up to 2.8 GHz and a working TDP of 4.8W with a max of 6W, which also includes an Intel UHD 600 iGPU. The upside is that this CPU package will run cool and won’t drain you battery as fast as other CPUs. It comes with a poor 4 GB of DDR4 Ram and an eMMC storage of 128 GB. This is the absolute minimum for a Windows device and it shows. After unpacking and setting up Windows, it took quite a while to update all the components. There is also a fair share of bloatware which can be removed to reduce the load. But even then, it’s obvious that this laptop is simply not up to snuff to run a Windows environment efficiently. I stripped as much as I could but even after sanitizing it, it still ran like a potato. Everything took forever to load and it ran poorly, to a point that you would think the laptop had frozen up. Even tasks such as browsing were time consuming as you had to wait forever for pages to load. Now, since I’m a bit of an adventurer, I decided to install a different OS which I believed to be more apt to run on this laptop. I went with Kubuntu and after some packages were updated, I was very pleasantly surprised to experience this little PC as it was meant to run. It booted almost instantly, the apps opened swiftly and ran at a decent speed, making it an excellent little PC which can handle office software and browsing and even very basic games. Here is a little breakdown of the good and the bad: Pros: + Very affordable + Nice design for the price + CPU isn’t power hungry + Screen is nice and bright + Keys are comfortable to use + Has ample connections and ports including HDMI + Small but not too small Cons: - Can’t run Windows 11 S efficiently - No Type C port - Low and slow RAM - Wobbly touch pad - Can only handle simple tasks and even then, it struggles - A lot of bloatware - The CPU is over 4 years old As is, this laptop would not be worth it. It simply can’t handle Windows 11 S nor any available apps. But if you are willing to do so, replacing the OS with a lightweight Linux distribution turned this laptop into a nice piece of hardware. As a matter of fact, I’m typing this review on it. So if you are on a budget and you’re a bit tech savvy, this laptop might do the job, else, I wouldn’t recommend it as it drags and lags really bad out of the box.

Excellent Purchase!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I added a 500gb NVMe M.2 for cheap. Took it out of S mode; exceeded my expectaions. I read all the reviews, read the site and watched videos; it was clear that you couldn't upgraded anything. I decided to peek inside before returning and jackpot. I only needed something portable, moving files but decided to load a few games and run some network functions for file sharing. Very good; might buy another.

Good computer for the price
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I try to temper my opinion of products based off of products that are obviously of a certain quality based off of price point. Knowing that this unit is probably one of the cheapest laptops on the market, I went into this with not much expectations and while setting up and using this computer, I really didn't find anything that disappointed me. After the initial setup, I installed Chrome which is my os of choice on all my platforms. Had no issues there and Chrome ran ok. It definitely wasn't as fast and zippy as my $1,000. laptop but I had no expectations of this. The first thing I noticed though is the screen clarity is definitely not great. I think on the specs, it's basically a 720p screen so the clarity, or lack thereof is quite evident, but not unsuable. Keyboard feels nice and spread out evenly so very comfortable to use with my hand size. I really get annoyed when keyboards are too close together. Trackpad was smooth and response was good. The unit itself is made of plastic so it does feel kinda cheap, but again, look at the price. There is 2 usb-a ports, hdmi and micro-sd slot for expanded memory. Speakers where adequate, sounded fine in a quiet room but hard to hear if there is any exterior noise. Definitely would need headphones. Also has bluetooth which is helpful to add any type of hearing devices. The one negative and might be important to otheres is the webcam. It's not good. I don't really zoom that often and wouldn't even think about if on this laptop if it was a business call. But for a quick chat with friends, it might be ok. For me, this is a purposeful unit because I will probably take it with me on the job. I can check and return emails, browse the internet, and do basic tasks. And because of the price, I won't worry too much about taking extra care of this computer. If you need a basic laptop to do basic tasks, this is a very good choice. And, you really can't beat the price.

Inexpensive zippy laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So if you are looking for an inexpensive laptop look no further. So it does not have a bunch of bells and whistles and it's definitely not a gaming system. It's just a basic laptop for browsing the web, watching youtube videos and checking your email. Under the hood it has the N4020 Dual-core(4M Cache, 1.10GHz - 3.10GHz CPU So it's a dual core so it's not clunky by any means and it will get the job done for basic stuff. You could do some basic homework on it if your looking for a laptop for school, but the problem you will run into is storage space in the system itself. It does have a SSD drive a solid state drive so it's not hindered by a mechanical drive so the drive itself is pretty fast 128GB Solid State Drive. But you also have to take into consideration you lose a chunk of that drive space to the operating system files right off. Not to say you can't get a small pocket sized ssd drive that hooks up via USB and then you have storage on the go to make up for the smaller sized drive. One of the nicer things is it does have an 8 hour battery life depending on what you are doing. If you are streaming a movie you are not going to get a full 8 hours but if you're writing a paper of checking emails you will get the 8 hours no problem. Included ports are as follows 2 x USB 3.0; 1 x USB Type-C; 1 x HDMI; microSD Card Reader; Microphone / Earphone Combo; 802.11b/g/n + Bluetooth. So you have the ability to hook up printers and other devices. All in all its a pretty zippy system but as you fill up the drive it will slow down a bit so i highly recommend getting an external hard drive and save the system drive for exactly that system files to run faster and smoother.

Great budget laptop!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This computer is my very first computer, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. With only 4 gigs of ram, it can be slow at times running the full windows 11, but it performs well under lighter loads, and showcases great value.

Not Even A One Trick Pony, More Like A 1/4 Trick
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one underpowered machine. Like almost completely unusably underpowered. If you happened to live through 386's and 486's computers, this laptop is almost nostalgic in a sense. If you recall Windows 3.11 Windows for Workgroups or even Windows 95, We didn't have to log in, but we still did have to boot up the computer. So we booted up the computer, and then we went and did something else, because we knew it would be a long time before the computer was ready to use. Well this laptop is like that. You boot it up, log in, and then its at least 10 minutes before a web page will load. Its that slow. It does get better, after you know 15 minutes of being booted up, you might even get two web pages to load at the same time, if you are lucky. This is after all updates were done, but before any tweaking or uninstalling were done. This laptop took over 6 hours to update when it was first powered on, I'm not kidding. And when it was updating, you couldn't do anything else, a single web page would not load, even when the updating cycle occasionally took around 45 minutes between reboots. I did uninstall everything I could, but I did leave it in Windows 11 S Mode, because, well it wasn't going to do any better with MORE complicated programs, thats for sure. After uninstalling everything I could, and turning off all the startup items I could, and changing the settings for Microsoft Edge and Phone Link apps to use the least amount of resources, I was able to get a simple web page to load after about 6 minutes after logging in, but it took another 3 minutes for a second tab's simple web page to load though. Thats the best I got. I did contact Lenovo Tech Support and they said it was a "software problem" and they only deal with hardware warranty issues and advised me to find a local tech to work on it. I would not recommend for any reason.

Lenovo Ideapad 14 inch.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought mostly to run a CNC program as i needed a computer to run program/software. It is a basic computer and does a good job going on the internet and doing basic shopping. Its definitley not a gaming computer and it has a entry level processor. Overall, after a couple of hours getting it to download all of the updates from microsoft and installing Norton anti virus on it, I can say its not too bad. Definitely quicker than my 5 year old HP. My biggest complaint is the key board is a bit smaller and takes me a little while to get used to it for typing. For the price I can't complain and I feel it is definitely on par with some of the medium priced chrome books. For $119.00 plus tax its been so far a good purchase and I can recommend it.

Painfully slow and almost unusable
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Lenovo Ideapad 1 14.0” laptop is nothing to shout about. It’s probably one of the slowest computers I’ve ever used. The speed reminds me of a NoteBook computer I owned over 10 years ago. Unlike that computer, this one is much slower. I don’t think I’ve used anything as slow as this machine. I can’t do much of anything on it. I knew it would not be able to run applications that required a lot of resources, but planned on using it for web browsing and light tasks. I fell miserably in that regard. After setting up the computer for the first time, it would barely open anything. When I tried to open the windows task manager it would take forever to load. Every app I tried to load would take several minutes to load before it just froze up completely. I installed MacAfee in hopes that it would speed things up, but there was little no difference. It as a good keyboard with good key travel and a decent trackpad. The speed up the computer makes it unusable. I’m wondering if they even tested the product before making it available for consumers. When using the laptop all I experience is blank white screens and a spinning circle icon next to the mouse cursor. I don’t recommend this laptop to anyone.
