Please ensure you have removed the plastic film that is on the screen to protect the unit during shipping. If the issue persists, it is possible setting up voice match and raising the "okay google" sensitivity will help with this. to setup voice match please open the Google Home app.
At the top right, tap your account.
Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
Tap Assistant settings Voice Match Add devices.
Make sure any devices you want to link your voice to are checked.
Tap Next I agree.
Follow the in-app steps.
To adjust the sensitivity of the mic please open the Google Home app .
At the bottom, tap Home .
Select your speaker or Smart Display.
At the top right, tap Device settings. ...

The audio is clear & full and reminds me of a HomePod Mini's sound set at 25% (this is pretty loud) when the Essential is set around 80-100%. The entire clock can be operated using Google voice commands, which while annoying, actually makes it easier to use. If you turn on Night Mode for this clock through the Google Home App you can have the display automatically dim itself to the point that the time isn't even showing or bright enough to disturb someone sleeping. Definitely worth getting when it's below $30.

Missing features almost ruin a great alarm clock

Take a traditional alarm clock, add a smart speaker, and make it display the current outdoor temperature. You don't REALLY need a full-color touchscreen display as a bedside alarm clock, so I like that this more traditional alarm clock design exists as an option. However, there are three critical areas where the device miserably fails as an alarm clock: 1. No backup battery; if your power goes out overnight, the device will not be able to play the alarm to wake you up. 2. No way to dismiss upcoming alarms. You either have to wait for it to go off first, or completely delete the alarm. You can't just temporarily disable it either. It's either set and active, or deleted, no other options. For a "smart" clock, that's not very smart... 3. No way to change the alarm sound. You can ask it to set a "media alarm" (by voice only, as far as I can tell), which will play a music album of your choice from a connected streaming service, but there's only one basic alarm sound. I suppose this is how it works with any other basic alarm clock, but it's disappointing that there aren't additional options on a more sophisticated device like this one. If you're OK with these drawbacks, then I think this is a pretty good product for the money. I just really wish there were better options for setting and managing alarms.
