I have to be very close to it (6-7 feet) for it to "hear" me and I have to speak louder than my other devices. So, the devices in other rooms sometimes respond rather than this one. Clock and temp are great.

You should be able to communicate with the Smart Clock Essential from across the room (approximately 8 meters). of course, the volume of your voice, background noise, and volume setting all play a role. The brightness changes based on the amount of light in the room, and it's never overbearing while trying to sleep.
