    Great Specs, TERRIBLE Build

I got this computer to play games and to use for school. It worked great for both. I could play my games on high settings, it ran wonderfully, and it was still thin and light enough that I could take it to class with me. Battery life wasn't great, but I expected that with this kind of computer. Most of the other reviews' complaints applied with my experience. The screen and sound wasn't great. The lid smudged VERY easily. I just cleaned it periodically, but it was a nuisance. My biggest problem, and the issue that convinced me to get rid of the computer in the end, is how the body of the computer is built. It is made from cheap, flimsy plastic. When I first opened the lid, I immediately noticed that the plastic the keys were set into would bend and bow as the lid moved. I was immediately worried. On top of that, the hinges were just terrible. I felt like I would break them just opening the lid. I kept the computer, and was extremely careful with it. I didn't want the entire lid to snap off, as it felt like it might at any time. I didn't have the laptop even a year before the plastic hinge started popping and creaking every time I opened it. Almost immediately after that, the entire hinge snapped apart. Best Buy took it, replaced the hinge, and sent it back. This time, it only took about three months for the hinge to snap. Same story. Sent it in, they fixed it, they sent it back. Took less than three weeks for the next break. Finally I just replaced it with an Asus. I WOULD NOT buy this computer again. I can get past the iffy screen and so-so speakers, but the computer just feels SO cheap. I paid a good bit of money for it, and the plastic was so flimsy that I was ready to get rid of it even before it started breaking. Wouldn't recommend. You can find the same specs in a much sturdier computer and keep it much longer. I only gave it as many stars as I did because it really did run well. I was completely happy with gameplay and speed. If it ran this well and had a metal body, or even just sturdier plastic, I'd give it five stars. As is, three seems generous to me, since the problem made it difficult to even use the computer. If I can't use the computer, it doesn't matter how well it runs, right? Do yourself a favor; find a laptop that won't snap in half or break it's hinges before you have time to complete a game. I feel like I wasted a lot of time and frustration on this computer.

    It's good and bad

I've had this laptop for about 4-5 months and so far I have very mixed feelings still. For the first few weeks I loved the graphics and how fast it worked and still do love that factor. This laptop is pretty good for heavy games but does build up quite a ruckus and heat. It has a nice sleek design, but is kind of on the heavier side, not a big deal. Speakers, just absolutely amazing. I also like the fact that the keys can light up. Touch screen works great. Brightness and clarity, not so great. Brightness of this laptop is very low and the clarity while browsing the web is just terrible, I have to zoom in and out constantly to see images/text. The border around the actual screen is a little unnecessary, good wasted space in my opinion. Laptop gets really dirty easily. It collects dust and finger prints regardless if your hands are dirty or clean. The touch pad is okay, I don't really like that right clicking is really hard to do on this. You would have press down on a specific area to get it to work, but this is easily solved by using a mouse. There's a good amount of usb ports, but sadly there is no disk drive so you can't burn CDs or whatever. You'd have to buy and external one, which is an extra 50 bucks. The worst part about this product would be the hinges. I'd say be very careful when opening and closing the screen... Part of the hinge will start popping/cracking. I don't think opening and closing the screen is the reason for this. It's just design of the laptop. It looks as if it's connected by just a bar in the middle with no support on the sides. Looks cool, but is very scary just to open it with the thought of the screen snapping right off. Laptop's interior is a plus, but some aspects of the exterior is what can ruin your experience with this laptop. If you are wiling to get your laptop fixed every 6 months, go for it. If not, look for a laptop that is actually durable.

    Excellent multitasking laptop

I bought this laptop a year ago to take to grad school, after my Dell was unable to handle anything graphics-intensive (read as: Youtube burnt its graphics card out). I use it more like a tower (hooked up to a monitor, keyboard and mouse) as the battery life is NOT great. It struggles to make it through one three-hour class. I am also not a fan of its trackpad and find it unresponsive and difficult. However, I bought it to be a high-powered, stationary multitasker that could go mobile if needed. So when it is plugged in, it's excellent. This laptop can run Photoshop (or other graphics/memory intensive software) and multiple gaming clients at the same time, as well as having your normal browsing applications open. It looks beautiful on larger monitors/TVs via the HDMI port. I wanted something that could easily run video editing software and this has no problem with Premiere. Couple problems: sometimes it doesn't start right and needs to restart, sometimes some program will bog it down and it will need to restart, every so often the screen flickers black then comes back (think this may be an issue in my cable, though). These are pretty rare and easily fixed by restarting. I have thousands of pics/song files/etc and the C drive isn't even half full. If you're looking for a laptop that can game all day and run everything you might need for school/work/fun, this is it. I do have a cooling fan but even when that is not in use it never overheats like my Dell did - if you aren't doing something graphics-intensive it will barely be warm. It's very fast as well. If you want something super portable and able to be away from its charger for a long time, this wouldn't be my first pick. If you want a powerful laptop that won't burn its graphics card out while gaming and can leave it stationary and plugged in, this is a flawless choice. I recently bought a tablet to take to class and sync with it to solve the mobility issue. This is an excellent gaming laptop and you will be very pleased with its performance.

I exchanged an HP with better specs. This one is somehow faster and more responsive. This is a very well built machine and it handles my games perfectly. There was a fair bit of bloatware, but probably a bit less than I've seen on other computers and it wasn't that hard to remove the bits that I didn't need. In fact there was a nice little application for virtual discs that game in handy, so I didn't have to install daemon tools. I even paid about $140 less in store than what it is currently advertised at online. All in all I'm very pleased with this laptop.

    Great performance, but...

I purchased this laptop in August for college. Within 3 days, it broke and would not power on at all. I took it back to Best Buy and got a new one which WORKED GREAT for about 4 months. Let me tell you this Lenovo could handle anything you threw at it, it was a beast. Good graphics, never got too hot. I play Total War games mostly on high settings and this laptop did fine. The problem was that the visual cable which Lenovo runs through the screen hinge frayed after 4 months and my display lost its red color and eventually died. I took it back to geek squad who said Lenovo could not repair it (I now have store credit). All in all, yes the laptop runs good but Lenovo's build quality and QC is very questionable. I broke two y50s in 4 months... Maybe a total of 20 hours of actual game time. Don't buy.

Love the design and speed but the battery never lasted more than 3 hours. When it got to 10% battery life it would shut down. Returned it for an HP Envy.

    Amazing 15" Gaming Laptop

This gaming laptop has exceeded my every expectation. After reading some of the negative reviews about the hinge, I was leary about purchasing. Being an Elite Plus member, though, I decided to take a leap of faith as I have the extended return policy. Pros: The laptop handles any game I throw at it with ease. Granted, I'm not playing the newest of the new, this also isn't the bleeding edge of hardware. I can play Diablo 3 at a respectable 98 frames per second on full max settings, and it easily tackles anything in my current steam library. With a GTX graphics card inside, it also supports streaming to the nvidia shield as well has hardware assisted streaming. Cons: The keyboard does flex a bit when I open and close the laptop. This is mildly concerning, buy I have full confidence in Geek Squad and the extended warranties to cover this in the event of a failure.

I bought this for my daughter for college, one day after day last day to return product we had to be re-image the software. After an additional 50 days of using the top of the computer started to become detached from the base of the computer. Currently waiting to see if this would be covered under warranty. A little disappointed in the computer at this point. I hope best buy makes it right. .

    The specs are great, but..

I almost purchase this laptop online today. First tip to buy the laptop is do some homework and then look at it in person. I went to the store this morning, and look at this model. Next to his laptop are Asus G751 gaming laptop and Lenovo Y70, which I used to compare the screen color and brightness. Everything seems great, specs wise and performance are good for Y50 for its price. Then comes to the screen. The touch screen is good, but when it comes to screen color and brightness its totally lost to Asus G751 gaming laptop and Lenovo Y70. These two models have much vibrant color and higher brightness setting. The brightness in Y50 model is not high enough and the color look wash-out compare to the other two laptops. If these does not bother you, then please by all means.

Poor Build Quality, Bad Cooling Design

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

At first, i thought that this was a decent laptop for the price: decent screen, although there was a lot of backlight bleeding through the screen, (i wish that had been the only problem), but even though I've only had this laptop for about 4-5 months or so, the poor build quality has reared it's head. The first problem i noted was that the hinge of the screen seemed tight, as though the hinge was tightened too far, but before i could make any attempts to solve that problem, the bezel covering the top of the hinge popped out, exposing that the screws connecting the screen to it's casing had completely broken away, and since they had taken their mounting holes with them it was impossible to even think of repairing. I am now holding this thing together with duct tape, and cannot close it for risk of shattering the screen, long enough to get some sort of alternate computer, after which i will attempt to either get this thing fixed, replaced, or refunded, depending on what's possible for it. I simply cannot believe that Lenovo would charge so much for a laptop that had decent specs, but very poor build quality, and with the heat vents located where they are (in the well of the hinge) the laptop heats up very quickly, even on a flat non carpeted surface. I hope that someone with either Lenovo or Best Buy can help me out with this, but i cannot help but be very disappointed with this product.

Great graphics and overall appearance. Fast computer as well. After 3 weeks the computer fails to turn on. Forums say the motherboard failed. Pretty frustrating. This is why I get the warranty. You can't count on anything electronic these days.

Within a year, I went through two of these laptops and i regret buying it. each of them had the same issue with the casing that started way too quickly from regular wear and tear. When I would open my laptop the plastic cover on the hinge would come part way off, and the second time in particular, when I tried to close it, it broke the screen. everything in the laptop runs well, that is why I gave it a second star. But as far as the casing goes, it is fragile and I have not enjoyed the six weeks i have spent waiting for the geek squad to say they cannot fix the laptop,.

    Hinge Problems- Poorly made

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this laptop for use in my first year college, specifically for engineering in August of 2014. It held up well for a little more than a month, and without any incidents, two screws popped out of the bottom of the laptop. I was able to screw one back in, but the other would not stay put. Because of the one screw being loose, the hinge casing also became loose and eventually fell off with normal use. During winter break in late December 2014, I submitted the device to Geek Squad to be repaired under their third party warantee, and they ended up giving me credit for a new device after letting the y50 sit in their warehouse for over a month. I decided to get another y50 a few weeks into the spring semester 2015, and the exact same problem happened again. I returned the laptop and credit was given to me, and this time instead of the Geek Squad protection plan being the reason why, the manufacturer's warranty kicked in, demonstrating the acceptance of guilt in the situation. The computer worked fine for engineering (CAD Programs) and gaming, but the battery was weak, and the hinge casing was weaker. I do not reccommend to anyone.

battery life is very VERY poor and within a couple of months of using the screen on the bottom left corner started to go out and the plastic covering the hinges started to come off. Now im not tough on my laptops. Each computer has its own back and gets wiped down with a microfiber towel every few days. Never will by another lenovo again

I purchased this laptop less than a week ago and just not thrilled with it for the money spent. I agree with the previous posting, brightness and clarity is very low, worse than any other computer i have ever had. I have to enlarge websites to 175% just to see them on a normal basis. All text on this laptop is tiny not your typical default. Its also slower than my 4 year old HP laptop. Not impressed for the money.

Hybrid drive sounds like a great idea but only using 5k rpm...seriously?! You wont even get the full power of the 8Gb and i7 processor until that's upgraded to 7k rpm. Remember, your computer is only as fast as it's slowest component and a 5k rpm hdd shouldnt be used anymore in computers,, even with an ssd as a cache.

Before I purchased this computer, which I intended to use for gaming and school, I used a mac. I bought this computer, took it home and set it up. I downloaded my favorite MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) and to my surprise, it lagged an unbelievable amount. I tried everything to fix this problem. I got support from lenovo, I called microsoft, and the couldn't fix my problem. For a second I thought it may be my wifi, not my computer, so I played the same game on my old laptop, and it ran just fine. The computer looked like it had amazing components on the reviews, but when I actually unboxed the laptop, it was a disaster.
