Great for Developers, Suberb Anti-Glare Screen

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I searched high and low for a strong CPU laptop that would meet a developer's needs, which these days mean generally looking at gaming laptops. Major requirements for me were a decent high-end processor, back-light keyboard for evening programming, ANTI-GLARE screen for coding outside (a must for me), and a touchscreen to test coded touch enabled apps, FYI gamers: Lenovo makes a comparable version without the touchscreen for about $200 bucks less. The NVIDIA graphics was just an added bonus. Most of my apps don't make use of the discrete graphics, though Chrome and a few other browsers do (I don't use Edge, so don't know about that). The laptop does come loaded with Lenovo bloatware (and others), but can be un-installed via the control panel (and regedit if you know what you are doing). The bloatware was an irritation, especially since some of it is broken and HAS to be removed anyways). Battery life is OK, but I get a full charge from a drained battery in about 30 mins. THE anti-glare screen was a gamble, being a glossy touchscreen panel (i figured I would have to return it on the basis that it wasn't antiglare). I was quite honestly astonished I can use it outside in direct sun, even with the sun at my back, as long as it's about 15 degrees off from directly behind me (superb!!!). Just remember it's a touchscreen so need to clean the screen if you are going to use in the sun outside. Also, I have never used a mil-spec matte anti-glare screen to compare to and I would assume it is not as good as those but those machine lack strong processors and are twice the price. Lenovo Chat Support has been EXCELLENT.. Never had better support in 20 years. I repeat, support is amazing, they actually can address all my issues without research! The One MAJOR issue is the screen does not tilt back back as much as most laptops (i don't mean open to lay flat, it only opens about 115 degrees - a guess), so if you are laying back in a recliner and want to tilt the screen back to see it better you are out of luck. The DVD drive is external, but no issue for me and is included. Sound is best i have on a laptop, the sub-woofer really helps. For people having issue with crashing, etc, try to remove all the bloatware helps a lot, but it does take some knowledge. There could be issues if you can't get rid of the bloatware. PROS: Everything but the screen tilt-back and bloatware. CONS: the limited screen tilt can be a major irritation and the bloatware really needs to be removed. That said, I'm running Visual Studio, Internet Information Services, and a bunch of other developer tools on it all at the same time without a hickup. For a sale price of $999.99 I considered it a steal... Even at current list of $1149, I couldn't find anything comparable. Gamers, your mileage may vary.. Oh, the battery is built in (but accessible to replace). Not an issue for me anymore, but can't just buy an extra battery to pop in when the other runs low.

Bought for my son and he spent 2hrs or more on tech support trying to set it up finally they told him it was a hardware issue and we had to return it . he chose not to try it again. . it may have been an isolated incident. but when you pay $900 you expect not to have a problem the Minuit you get it home..try it if you want but this is our experience and my son will never try another brand with this name .

Right after my one year protection ran out, the laptop wouldn't power up. We took it to the local service folks and the motherboard is completely dead. During the first year we dealt with periodic freezing of the keyboard when playing games, but online reports all attributed this to graphics driver/Win 10 conflicts -- now I think the motherboard was always bad.

I had the worst experience with Lenovo computers. They had to replace my motherboard twice on both laptops I had. I got the newer model after my first one broke and that one had exactly the same issues. I would go with absolutely any other brand. I take care of my devices and they broke in under a year each time.

After the recent death of my former craptop, I set out in search of a new PC, one that would last a very long time. A relative of mine bought the Lenovo y50 about a year ago, and had nothing but good things to say about it. Now that I too own a Lenovo PC, I can confirm that this is one amazing machine. I don't use this for gaming, but it still displays its performance well. Pros: The screen looks great, and comes with an anti-glare protector installed. It can be removed if you prefer the more glossy look. The speakers are very loud, and considering their size, are very high quality. Even with the amount of hardware that has been packed into this thing, it has a rather thin body. The brushed finish has a very nice metallic appearance, however it's plastic. Temperature is kept very comfortable thanks to the dual exhaust fans. The external disk drive that is included in the purchase acts just like a normal drive; no need to install any extra software for it to work. _____ Cons: The battery life is okay, but I feel like its primary purpose is to keep a bit of backup power if you're somewhere you cant plug in, not to sustain for a long time. The body, both inside and out, is a fingerprint magnet, but a microfiber cloth does the job. _____ All in all, this is an excellent laptop and should not be overlooked. The combination of the new Intel i7 Skylake and the GTX 960 provide high performance under rigorous conditions, and the device's build creates a very sturdy feel.

I just bought this laptop 3 days ago and I have to say it is absolutely amazing. Games run without any lag and I get a good 60 FPS at Ultra-High settings with the 4GB Nvidia graphics without getting hot. Processor speed is also very fast along with lots of memory for multitasking. It almost boots up and runs as if there is an SSD installed instead of the hard drive. The laptop is also very easily upgradable as the whole bottom cover comes off and the memory, hard drive and cooling fans are accessible. I think this laptop has great overall performance at a great price.

I had nothing but trouble with the laptop, if it wasn't one driver, it was another. I felt like I was spending more time with Lenovo and Geek Squad than enjoying the computer. I ended up trading it for a HP.
