Great value, but just fair otherwise
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At $499, the same price as a 16GB iPad Air, you can have a full-featured Windows 8 Laptop and a Windows 8 tablet. Of course, its a lot heavier than an iPad air, but you do get a full keyboard and a whole lot of ports you won't find on the iPad. If you want to know the bottom line, its this: the IdeaPad Yoga 2 11 is absolutely worth $500. Just don't think you are getting an $800 machine for $500. Honestly, it seems like finding fault with a machine that costs $499 is like criticizing the local Burger King for not offering caviar. But I'm going to do it anyway! For starters, lets talk about the good stuff: It looks really, really nice. In fact, it reminds me a lot of the very first MacBooks - the same black outer shell with a chicklet keyboard inside. The outer shell is black plastic that looks - and feels - premium. It has an elegant, expensive appearance. Around the outer edges is a black rubber strip that also feels great. Opening the lid reveals a silver-colored inside that looks very much like the aluminum on a much more expensive computer. Nothing about the look says "cheap." The screen is also very good. Its not the absolute brightest or clearest but its very useable and has wide viewing angles. In fact, if you download the updated Intel Graphics Drivers from the Lenovo site, you can tweak the gamma settings to make the colors richer. It doesn't take much tweaking to make the panel look a lot better. Touch response has been very good, and for me, very accurate. I have no complaints about the screen at all. The use of a Pentium (actually a 4-core "Bay Trail" CPU based on the Intel Atom "silvermont" architecture) is a nice touch, especially for business and travel users. Its a reasonably fast low-end CPU that is very power frugal. One unexpected bonus is that this CPU does not need a fan and air ducting to vent heat, so its quiet all the time and doesn't get unpleasantly hot. If you want to play CPU intensive games, this is not the machine for you. But if you want to run typical apps like web browsers and e-mail and Facebook and Microsoft Office, it is more than enough. Frankly, I applaud Lenovo's choice of CPU here. Most people have said this CPU is about the same speed as last year's Core i3 and I have no doubt that's true. 500GB of drive space is appreciated. You'll be left with about 400gb free after you install all the updates, which is still a lot. The Lenovo site says its a hybrid drive with 16GB of flash cache to help speedup operations. It is very quiet, nearly impossible to hear. Audio quality is surprisingly good. The charger is also pretty small and will fit nicely in a travel bag. The Yoga feature works well and makes this like having 2 machines in 1 - a laptop and a tablet. Tablet mode is surprisingly useable. This device has a micro-dvi video out. The more expensive Yoga 2 11s has a full size DVI. If you use this machine for business, the micro-dvi is far more useful. If you are plugging into your TV at home, you will need an adapter. The keyboard, while not backlit, feels very good. There is just a bit of flex in the center, but its not bad at all. The IdeaPad was not preloaded with a lot of crapware (Lenovo's own crapware being the exception). The Bad: It aint fast. The Pentium processor is on the low end of today's laptops, but its the slow hard drive that chokes the system. 5200 RPM only. And that's before the installed McAfee bloatware takes its toll. This is supposed to be a hybrid drive, but I don't think it is. According to the device manager, the model number of the hard drive reveals a non-hybrid Seagate. Either way, its slow, and with McAfee enabled, its glacial. Right away, be warned that you will spend hours and - hours and hours- updating Windows. The IdeaPad Yoga 2 11 does not come with Windows 8.1, and you are at least 75 updates away from even being in a position to start downloading Windows 8.1. 400mb of Windows 8 updates, then 3.2GB of Windows 8.1 update, then another 200MBs just in the built-in apps. And this is BEFORE you load your own software. I did not expect that. It probably took 5-7 total hours of update/installs to get the machine current. If you don't disable McAfee first, double or triple this time. Lenovo should have preloaded this with Windows 8.1, because immediately having to spend this kind of time updating a brand new system is pretty lame. There were also a lot of updated drivers on the Lenovo site that have to be downloaded and manually installed. I think Lenovo rushed this machine out with an old software build. Once the updates are done, you will find speed is just OK. The hard drive lets the machine down. I compared this speed-wise to a dual core Clover Trail Intel Atom based 2-in-1 machine from a year ago. The older ATOM CPU should be about 75% slower than the Pentium CPU in the IdeaPad, but the older machine usually launched apps faster and that difference is all down to hard drive speed (the older machine has an SSD). Closing the app and relaunching, when the app is still cached in RAM, showed the IdeaPad being 2x-3x faster. Which just shows how much the HDD impacts performance. In fairness to Lenovo, this is true of all inexpensive laptops in the $500 price range, none of which have the cool yoga hinge. But compared to tablets with flash storage, its pretty bad. I'm also a bit skeptical that the HDD will last in a tablet that's moved around a lot. HDDs and device motion were not made for each other.... WiFi range seems to be just adequate, and quite a bit less than my MacBooks, iPads, or Android devices. Its also only 2.4ghz. All the power you save with the Pentium CPU is sucked up by the spinny hard drive. Expect about 6 hours. Lenovo's built in apps are pretty useless. The keyboard is not backlit. At this price point, few are. Overall: Most affordable door to the Yoga family. Premium look and feel. Adequate performance for productivity, social media, and simple games. Good for travelers and business people who need the versatility of the Yoga form-factor without spending $800 on the Yoga 2 11s. Beats an iPad or Android tablet for productivity at the same price (and includes a keyboard). Way more useful than a Microsoft Surface RT. Just don't expect the performance of an $800 machine.

broke within a week
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My twins each purchased one for the start of high school. None were in stock at any Best Buy within driving distance, so they mailed them to us. They arrived within a week, so that was nice. Unfortunately, one of them stopped working within 4 days. We brought it back to Best Buy and they ordered us a new one. While waiting for that one to arrive, the other one stopped working. Brought them both back and ordered a different brand. No worries so far.
