Finally, the best laptop for the yoga series

Ever since I laid my eyes on the original lenovo yoga, I was sold. Unfortunately, it's taken Lenovo a while to get to the right design. The original yoga had wifi issues, the yoga 2 was heavy while the yoga 2 pro had coloration issues. The yoga 3 pro looked like it was going to finally be perfect but the extremely high price point, subpar battery life, weird keyboard and hinge left more to be desired. Finally - enter the yoga 3 11. I just picked mine up from Best Buy and I'm already loving it. Here's a summary of why it's better than all the other ones: - Light: at 2.4 lbs its the lightest in the lenovo lineup - 11" screen: the 13" models can't practically be used as tablets - AC wifi: the original 2 yoga's only had bgn - Fanless core m: the yoga 3 pro promised m, but it's not fanless - Normal keyboard: the yoga 3 pro took away the function key row which is kind of weird, luckily its back on the yoga 3 - 1080p screen / battery life: the QHD in the yoga 2/3 pro is cool to look at initially, but programs are not built for QHD and it drains battery - the yoga 3 gets us the 1080p with 6 hrs battery life - Sleek design: The yoga 3 pro hinge looks kind of tacky - the two hinge model used on the yoga 3 is just fine with me - Price: at 8gbRAM, 256SSD for $849 this is one of the best deals in the market If you're still not convinced - go try it out at the store cuz this one's a winner.

    Poor Laptop for the Value

I'll be quite honest here with you. This laptop overall is not a bad laptop if your just blowing your money and you want something that is light. I purchased the laptop and sent it back packing after using it for five days. I'll make some points here. The point of the review is not to bash the laptop, but to give you a different view from what others provided. 1. No Back Light Keyboard: Not a major problem, but for the amount of money, there is no back light. 2. Slow: The laptop utilizes the M core i series. It is very slow and compares close to the performance of an atom processor. It has the ability to load webpages fine and play light games, but handled poorly when multitasking. The 8GB of ram helps, but since the processor was slow.. the 8GB of RAM could not make up for it. 3. Touchpad: The touchpad is finicky. It moves fine when you touch it in the store, but becomes non-responsive at times when the laptop is under duress. Sometimes, I used the touch screen to move the webpage. The area of the trackpad is small, but that is expected for a small laptop. 4. Screen Quality: The screen quality is ok. It is not bad, but not great. For watching movies and etc, it's not a problem being a 1080p... but the colors are not that vibrant. For someone who is not big on the screen, this should not be an issue. 5. Weight & Mobility: The weight of the laptop is great. I had no problem carrying it around and is a major selling factor. 6. Bloatware: Yes, it is on the laptop. Not too much, but is enough to annoy someone for the amount of money paid. You can easily remove it. 7. Battery Life: Battery life is poor. I had a problem with this because the point of the m core processor is to provide value in extending the battery life the device. It's not lenovo's fault, but i would get 2.5 hours under heavy -heavy use and about 5:30 under light use. For going to work or studying, you should be fine, but make sure you charge it. I was impressed with the ultra power saving mode that kicks in at 20%. 8. Versatility: This laptop is great for turing into a tablet or used as a touch screen device. The laptop felt quite sturdy and I had no problem transforming it for different uses. 9. Touchscreen: No issues here. No matter where you touched the screen, it worked fine and was very responsive. 10. Charger: I was really... really annoyed by this. The length of the charger is extremely short. I had to sit next to the wall in my house in order to charge the device while in use. I have many other devices with extremely long or decent length chargers. Be prepared to sit next to an outlet if charging. 11. Wireless: I never had a problem with the wireless connection. It was able to take advantage of the AC connection and was able to connect to both the 2.4 and 5 GHz band. 12. Spyware Incident: Part of the reason I took it back. Lenovo had adware installed on the laptop that could be taken advantage of. Look it up if you haven't heard about it. An MS update is suppose to nuke the problem and Lenovo apologized... but you never know about security these days. 13. Windows 10 Tech Preview 2: Do not install this. The keyboard will not work no matter what. This is not the fault of Lenovo and the Tech Preview 2 is not official. Just be warned if your wandering about this. Also, the screen will not rotate correctly since Lenovo has to update this. It's somewhat a concern when Windows 10 officially comes out. I hope they have an update for this. 14. Overall Thoughts: I am a geek and I like things to work smoothly. For an overpriced laptop, I would not recommend it. For the poor speeds, poor battery life, and standard feel... your better of buying a Lenovo 2 and saving a few extra bucks. Honestly, I would purchase many other devices over this. I am writing this review because it's very new and I could not find anything on this. I hope this review helps. Please understand I write this honestly and from my frustrations I had. If money is no object and you like to show it off, it's maybe for you.

    Lenova Yoga 3 epic fail

This is NOT Best Buy's problem, but a manufacturer issue. The motherboard on my Lenovo Yoga 3 is failing after less than two years. That's a major fail for such a short time. A one year warranty essentially says that you get a year, and if there is serious problem with the machine's hardware, you just spent a LOT of money for short term use. Even the Geek Squad representative who tried to fix it said that was way too soon for a motherboard to be going out and that I should call Lenovo. That was a waste of my time, unfortunately. So I'll be going back to Best Buy, after doing some research, to purchase another laptop and it WON'T be Lenovo.

Let me preface this by saying I have the original Yoga 13, core i5 3rd gen, upgraded to 8/128+240, and it's been great. I travel alot though, and wanted a smaller footprint, with similar capabilities. I bought the Yoga 3 11, Core M, 8/256. I really wanted to love it, and I tried for a month, but in the end, the processor is just a dog. I'm not sure it's the Core M itself, but I've read enough online to believe that Lenovo is throttling the performance to keep the heat down, in lieu of adding a fan. I respect that, sort of, except when it crushes the performance of the machine. (Note that this Core M is the newest one, and theoretically the fastest.) I did find that keeping it on a cooling pad extended the time it lasted before throttling itself. I'm in IT, I understand thermodynamics, and I used to be certified to repair Compaq, IBM and Dell laptops, so I do know what these things do from the inside out. Here's the deal: If you are a casual user that doesn't do anything CPU intensive, you are probably ok. The disk screams, the display is great, the battery lasted through a 5 hour flight from the east coast to California. If it was $500, I might have kept it, but not at $900 including tax. That is approaching Surface Pro 3 territory, and perhaps with Surface Pro 4 on the horizon? Perhaps with a bit more cooling and unthrottling the CPU, but not as it is today.

I am a software engineer and purchased this laptop because I needed a windows based system and a tablet. At first I was somewhat happy with the laptop. It has a sturdy design, and is somewhat resilient. I noticed the performance was, to put it bluntly, was terrible. This left me angry with both Microsoft, and Lenovo, for essentially not telling the truth about there product. I researched ways to overclock the processor, to do anything I could to get the laptop faster. A couple months went by and apparently a few people had the same bug I did. What we found is that a service called "ymc" aggressively throttles the laptop. After finding this out I simply turned off the service (window key, type "services", open as admin, scroll to bottom, right click on "ymc", click properties, and disable) and prest-o change-o, super laptop. I have a $3k mac and an i7 pc and laptop, now the yoga 3 11 hangs with the best of them. Processing as smooth as silk. I do not understand why Lenovo feels the need to throttle so aggressively, especially when the hardware is designed to protect itself. I quite honestly feel that someone made a mistake in how the throttling works, but I won't hold it against lenovo, they make good products and humans are imperfect. In short, this system feels like a solid i5 contender now, and can even handle gaming! The other thing too, I do not like Microsoft & Windows. I only use it because my clients need support for it. But now that the ymc service is off, I don't mind windows so much. It is fast, light, and lean. I'm giving 5 stars because I did not expect this system to be this fast even with overclocking or throttling turned off. Rock on Lenovo.

Quality machine with a patience requiring CPU

Wanting to work on the go, but also have a silent machine, the Yoga caught my eye. The Core M CPU can be - tempermental, but after a few days it seemed to calm itself down, not throttling itself down severely and keeping up with tasks. The 8GBs of memory helps keep app snappy, and the 256GB SSD gives me plenty of space since I kept Windows 8.1 on the machine, using placeholders with OneDrive to only bring the files I needed down to the device. My model has some odd pressure issues on the screen, but they seem to have cleared up over time. Would recommend for someone wanting a highly portable machine with needs that exceed what an Atom chip can power, but not needing the full power of a i5 or i7 CPU.

Just got this for my daughter. I would not mind using it for myself buty my current laptop works fine. Great size and weight overall for lugging around. Excellent screen and overall performance. Minor gripes: 1. keyboard not backlit. Some people mind that, some don't. It is what it is and you don't have to test the unit to see. Either it's a problem for you or it isn't. 2. battery life about 5 hrs to 6 hrs only. Not bad unless you're a true road warrior who does not have charging access for at least one part of the day. 3. the drive is partitioned in two. Not a big deal perhaps, but I do mind it. Pros: 1. weight, size and performance combination. there are few laptops out there that can match it in this regard. 2. fanless. It does tend to run a bit hot with gaming, but no big deal. They all do. Just put a fan under it if it bothers you. 3. great screen. I do not expect to see any more detail at any higher resolution for this screen size. it probably keeps the cost and power use down a bit and to me that matters more. 4. overall build quality. the keyboard could have more travel when you press it but that's a minor gripe.

This laptop is neigher a laptop nor a tablet. It fails at both categories. Sure, it's compact and light. And that's the ONLY good thing about it. Battery life? 4-5 hours MAX. While with Core-M processor it should be 8+. Processor itself? Total waste of time (nomen omen). It constantly down-clocks itself (to save electricity), meaning everything is soooo slloooooooow. Try playing any (any!) computer game and you'll see. Even Civilization V (game from 2010) barely works, only on minimal settings. Playing movies? Barely, 720p is max (1080p is a slide-show). Upgrade to Win10? Graphics drivers (Intel HD 5300) don't work, "error 43", meaning you'll immediately downgrade to Win8.1. Not enough USB ports (but that's to be semi-expected in ultrabook). Irritating keyboard (but you can get used to it). But touchpad? Try using right-key. Hint: it won't work. If you want to right-click anything you'll end up connecting your mouse. I so wish I had returned this garbage within 15 days of purchase. But I had to go overseas and didn't have time. Do not make my mistake. Stay away. But Dell XPS or similar.

    Good laptop BUT...bubbling/mouse issue?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

So this is an awesome laptop. I love love the fact that it loads up fast, has a good processor, looks beautiful. Feels good when you hold it, is super light and portable, and it has touchscreen. Well, one of the problems that I have run into and when I was looking it up on online was the mouse issue/bubbling issue on the laptop. I'm not even sure why its doing that and why the issue is there when the item is brand new. I was thinking about getting a new one and replacing it and all that good stuff that best buy offers before the 15th day or whatever, but its the 16th day and it just got worse after the 16th day... I did a reset or whatever. I didn't restore back to default settings but just a reset and the mouse moving erratically with the bubbling became even worse. So I decided to uninstall synaptics drive and reinstall it via whatever drive there was on the lenovo website. I couldn't really find my drive per say but I went with the one that look the closest on the lenovo website (lenovo yoga 3 1470 drivers). Anyway I installed touchpad driver from the website which I noticed was a downgrade from the one that is installed on my laptop. (Version 19.0.14.71) Anyway, my mouse bubbling issue/mouse moving erratically has been fixed thus far. So just in case anyone is having mouse/bubbling issues try this version. May help. Its not a permanet fix but a temp fix I'd say? Otherwise...when I first got it the Wifi was extremely slow for some reason and connection was not that good but I did the same thing did a reinstall of the drivers and it seem to working good now. So overall its a great computer if you can fix the bugs/issues on the laptop. Otherwise you should look into something else.
