I purchased this product simply to read the occasional disc since my newer laptop did not come with a disc drive. I purchased it in my local Best Buy store, there was not a large selection to choose from. So, the product looks nice and it is small. But mine doesn't seem to work. Right out of the box, following the instructions, I began the setup process. The drive kept making an annoying skipping noise, the setup would not start. So I popped the disc back out and checked it. There was a tiny little smudge on the brand new disc so I carefully cleaned it and placed it back in the drive. This time the startup screen began, but it just hung there. I don't have the patience for a product like this. Another reviewer mentioned a compatibility issue with Windows 8, but it states on the box that it is Windows 8 compatible. I will be returning this and looking for something else.

I went to best buy and bought a macbook pro with a retina display, knowing that this laptop did not come with a disk drive I asked the guy selling it to me how much a disk drive would run me. He told me that this disk drive would do everything the apple disk drive would do, and it was cheaper. I just plugged it in to find out it doesn't read any of my disks properly and it won't connect to my laptop for more than a few seconds at a time, making it imposible to put my music on iTunes. I am very unsatisfied with this purchase and after my laptop is payed off I don't plan on shopping at best buy anymore.

I bought this to add functionality to my windows 8 ultra book and maybe burn some cds and watch an occasional dvd on my laptop. Like confused monkey said...there was no simple play button after inserting a dvd...a software flaw. I mean W T F!! This is the most basic feature...after reading his review I decided to skip dealing with Cyberlink's customer service and just returned it since the 15 day window to return stuff to best buy was about to end. So what a complete waste of time, effort, and gas both to buy and then to return this item. It probably will be fine if you don't need to watch a dvd on your computer but It seems kind of stupid to have to have yet another device just for this single purpose...so back it went. Oh well, at least i didnt have to ship it back and got my refund almost immediately...but now i have to find another external cd-dvd reader-writer that doesnt come with junk software.

I bought this for my husband to use on his iMac and he loves it. I can't give any specifics, however, if he gives me some feedback, I'll post an updated review.

So, I had to ditch the internal DVD because I wanted the SATA cable for an SSD. This is the replacement and it does what a DVD drive does.

This burner/player is bundled with CyberLink Media Center 10, including burning and media software. Great deal.

This LG cd/ cdrw/ dvd writer does just the trick at minimal cost, since I opted for a thinner lighter laptop for more mobility.

Very nice design and compact. But sometimes it has trouble reading disc

This comes in handy for the MacBook Air because there is no CD holder in the laptop.

Good for the price, not a fast one though will recommend.

The packaging makes it look like an aluminum casing, it is indeed a textured plastic case. the one i bought doesnt read the disc that it came with or any other i have tried, all it does is move the read write head and then click, then repeats. returning for refund

Portable and easy to use. ..BUT I haven't had this even a month and it just quit working if you are going to buy definitely get the geeksquad protection. ..will be returning to see what other options I have

Bought to use with hybrid computer. Worked fine, though seemed a bit flimsy from the thin design. Returned after deciding to just map a drive to my desktop DVD.

I usually am very satisfied with the products I get at BB, so this was really disappointing. I was planning on using this product in conjunction with my business and I wasted over 2 hours trying to get it to work. After I installed the "CyberLink" software that came with the product, I found that there was no way to actually play a DVD. Hmm, seems like the description of the product said I could do this! There was actually nowhere on the "CyberLink" menu to actually do ANYTHING with a DVD! It looks like you have to purchase an upgrade (?) to use the DVD functionality. The LG and CyberLink websites were confusing and unhelpful. I guess I'm just used to products that you can actually "plug 'n' play" without alot of nonsense. This one's going right back to bestbuy.

The only way to install the driver software is with a CD/DVD drive? I bought an external drive because my computer didn't come with one! I can't install it! LG's website doesn't have the software to download and install, so the unit is useless and going back to the store. It should say on the box that a working CD/DVD drive is required to install the software, but it doesn't. COMPLETELY USELESS.

Out of box experience was really poor. Device not found until plugged into a USB 2.0 hub. The Surface 2 Pro, only has USB 3.0. ports. After plugging in to USB 2.0 hub, drive was found, drivers installed, drive would not reliably function. Drive keeps starting and stopping, and keeps appearing and dis-appearing from the Devices and drives list. If anyone knows of a solution, please reply.

Worked good for the first two months, then broke, had to return

I asked for a dvd/cd read write usb drive for a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 i7 and purchased this unit because of sales persons specific recommendation. It is not compatible. When I returned it, the return person indicated she had handled several returns for the same reason.

This doesn't have have drivers for mac and good luck finding one even though it claims being mac compatible ..Ive been waiting for online support for over an hour and still nothing...Don't waste your money on a product that has zero customer support....
