Most of the new ones don't have the drive or soft ware for these tasks. While those that do have the drive they don't have the software. This is an all in one package.

Works Great

I went a year with out a DVD reader/writer and I needed one for a weekend project. Worked like a champ, didn't need to install anything. I went for this one over the one Apple provides because it was half the cost. I'm glad I did. I'd be concerned using it for travel. The build quality seems a bit iffy - doesn't seem like much, but maybe that's a good thing.

Good for laptops but not desktop

The best features are the thin case that makes it easy to put in a bag and you don't need an external power source.
