Q: Can I download software to my computer with this?
A: I bought an LG silver DVDRW/CDRW external double layer super multi disc drive. I don't know what double layer means but it did what I wanted. If you have a desktop with a dvd drive that stopped working, I highly recommend this product. I just plugged it in with the usb wire that was included and downloaded the software. I had 2 programs that I needed to install, photo explosion and vhs to dvd. I was finally able to install them. One thing I did pick up when reading the reviews, you should plug the usb wire into one of the usb outlets directly on the computer. Hope this helps since I'm a newbie also.
Q: Other drives I've seen do not say "double-layer". What does this mean and is it important to have?
A: "Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW" is referring to the type of DVDs and CDs. Those are discs that provide twice the storage capacity of a standard DVD or CD recordable disc. The discs employ two recordable dye layers with each being capable of storing nearly the 4.7 GB capacity of a single layer disc, almost doubling the total disc capacity to 8.5 GB. The LG 8x Portable DVD Rewriter with M-DISC™ SuperMulti Blade Drive, Model # AP70NS50 can read such discs and the discs can only be created using DVD+R DL and Super Multi drives...^IFV

AGPTEK External CD/DVD Drive for Laptops - Many modern laptops no longer have built-in CD/DVD drives, making it impossible to insert CDs or DVDs to play music, watch movies, back up data or install systems. The AGPTEK external drive is the perfect solution, plug and play with no additional drivers required. Ensure the drive is recognized: Insert the external optical drive into the computer. After the Windows system recognizes the optical drive, the "DVD RW Drive" icon will be displayed. The Mac OS computer will not display the device icon until the disc is placed in the optical drive and the disc is read successfully. If the computer fails to recognize the optical drive, it may be that the computer's driver is missing or the output current is insufficient. About data cable & power cord: 1.The USB data cable is built into the bottom of the drive.(Note: The total length of the data cable is only about 10.24 inches / 26 cm.) 2.The charging cord is a separate USB cord that comes with the package. The charging cord cannot be used as a data cable alone, it must be used together with the USB data cable built into the back of the drive. 3.It's better to use the 5V charger/power bank to increase the power if your computer don't have enough power to support the external drive. (Note: For the Apple computers, you need to connect the external CD/DVD drive to the mac/macbook/imac through the USB A/C data cable first, and then connect the 5V charger/power bank to the external CD/DVD drive through the charging cord, otherwise the Apple computer will not recognize the external CD/DVD drive.) WINDOWS 11 Requirements: WINDOWS 11 needs a media player (such as VLC ) and a network connection. Reading and writing speed: 1.This CD/DVD drive supports USB 3.0 and can provide data transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps. Although it has up to 8x DVD read/write speed and 24x CD read/write speed, the drive reads and writes CD/DVD discs at speeds that increase from the inner circle to the outer circle, and the starting speed is usually lower, reaching the maximum speed when reaching the outermost circle. 2.Recommended speeds (CD: Reading Speed: 24x or lower/Writing Speed: 8x to 16x; DVD: Reading Speed: 8x or lower/Writing Speed: 4x to 8x). For DVDs, slower writing speeds like 4x or 8x are often ideal to ensure data integrity, particularly for high-capacity or dual-layer discs. These speeds allow for more precise data encoding, reducing the risk of read errors in the future.

12/30/2020 I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch with a thunderbolt port which requires an adapter to connect to the USB ports of any DVD players. It appears that not every DVD player can connect via this method, it seems there is some connection issue with some DVDs. I originally had ordered an LG DVD ultra slim portable writer SP80NB80 Which was not able to be identified by my MacBook Pro. After discussion with both LG and Apple, it sounds like it’s a hit and miss process to see what might work with this machine and the new port systems. I gave LG another try and this time ordered the super multi blade slim portable DVD writer AP70NS50. Success! Right out of the box, my laptop identified the disk Drive and I was able to trial three different DVD discs which all worked. I would highly recommend this to anyone with an Apple product that has thunderbolt Ports requiring an adapter to connect to the USB cable. I’m only 30 minutes into using this product, so I can’t recommend it based on longevity with continued use, but it is working on the front end and I am able to play DVDs, so for now I am very happy!

This is amazing. My current laptop has a built in Blu-ray burner, a 2010 Sony Vaio ( another great Best Buy purchase), only my burner needs replaced. This new LG external burner is surprisingly awesome. Really looks like the Blu-ray did! Sleek, compact design is perfect for any use! It is also Apple device compatible! I just bought it 03/26/2020, still very impressive, super value.

My new desktop computer didn’t have a DVD drive; so, I purchased this unit. I really like it’s small size. I’ve had it a few weeks and it installed and functions without issues, as one would expect. The only thing I didn’t like is the vibration noise that occurred when the DVD drive was running on top of my computer. This noise was very annoying. This problem was solved by moveing it to the top of my desk. Maybe all DVD drives would vibrate when placed on my computer. Just something to be aware of if you plan to place this unit on a surface that is not solid.
