A: Yes.
A: I just had a similar problem. I went back to Best Buy and was told that as long as the computer is connected to the internet, one does not need the software CD at all. I tested this theory when I got home by inserting a music CD when I connected the device. Presto! the iMac now recognized the device and I transferred the music to my computer with no problem or difficulty. I haven't tried to burn a CD, or anything else, so I don't know if there will be a problem controlling that without the software CD, but my computer came with an application called "iDVD" so I'll have to investigate what that does.

Small and Compact
Easy installation, works well, but software needs to be upgraded to make it fully functional as a R/W drive. I bought this for that feature, as my home computer had a dvd player, but not capable of making a mirror image of my hard drive. Well this units software said I couldn't do this without buying the upgraded version of the software. I was disappointed to learn this, as this was the purpose of making this purchase in the first place, now having to purchase the next level of software to make it fully functional. It's small and compact and easy to use, just limited in what it can do. This should be included with product description.
