I never thought I would be able to see the difference between a bluray player and a full 4K player. The difference is easily seen just looking at the outside edges and the colors. The player itself was nicely packed in and is easily setup within minutes. I would have liked to see a HDMI cable included for the cost of the player. Pros: Easy Setup Great Colors Sound is great through sound bar and 7.1 tests Multiple viewing modes Easy to navigate remote Up-scaling traditional BluRay works great Cons: Size I highly recommend this 4K player to anyone. I was unable to test the 3D.

Picked this up because it was supposed to have support for Dolby vision only to find out that it does not and has been promised in a firmware update since it's release. If you are looking for Dolby vision check and see if it has been added before you purchase this.

Solud all around unit but weak audio

First it currently has only two apps with Netfilx gone but now back. But really who uses a bluray player for that reason? The LG UP970 player is the entry-level model in LG’s range of Ultra HD Blu-ray players, so with that in mind... This is a well built and solid all around unit that does a great job on upscaling and displaying native 4K video discs. Playback was flawless and the response times for the different commands were short, as were the loading and disc initialization times. But I took off a full star for lack of support for DLNA streaming: impossible to play videos shared on a home network or directly from a smartphone. As well as for a motor that makes a very loud constant buzzing noise that you can hear while the movie is playing. The LG UP970 Ultra HD Blu-ray player is equipped with two HDMI outputs, the second of which is dedicated exclusively to audio signal transmission–practical when using a home theater receiver unable to handle UHD content. In such a scenario, the Blu-ray player may be connected directly to the display device without passing through a receiver. A stereo amplifier equipped with a DAC or an external DAC may then be connected to the player’s optical output in order to play PCM signals in stereo format. Lastly, a 10/100 RJ45 Ethernet port and a USB 2.0 front panel port round out connectivity.

Junk - Video issues with LG OLED TV

I was excited to receive a matching LG UHD 4K player capable of showcasing my LG 55" OLED TV. Received the pre-ordered unit today and as soon as I turned it on the video would drop in and out. I was using the same HDMI cable and TV input that I was using a Philips 4K BD player (BDP7501) so I know it has to be the LG UP970 causing the issue. So disappointing. This is going back after just 10 minutes of attempted use.

Many 4K HD Bluray disc freeze up in the same spot during play back. These are new discs. I thought it was a dirty or damaged disc. I was wrong. It is too bad that I did not figure this out earlier. It is out of warranty now.

The player case has the quality of the $40.00 dvd player bought for the kids room. I was hoping they spent some money on the inside. I was wrong. The transport system is so bad that most DVD's sound like a dentist drill as they play. You literally have to put this in another room to enjoy the movie.

Outstanding Video Quality and Color Accuracy

Videos played by the LG UP970 look stunningly clear, rich and detailed. I'm not saying that there are no other good Blu-Ray players out there but this is the first in the somewhat low price range that I have tried and was impressed. You almost feel - not just see - the colors as if things were in front of you, not just on the screen. To see what I am talking about, I would recommend playing Planet Earth II 4K. But before buying this player, you need to make sure your TV is not only 4K compatible but also supports High Dynamic Range capability. The images will probably look great on any 4K TV but the wow effect can only be experienced fully with HDR. Otherwise, you can go with a cheaper player. Planning on upgrading your TV some time in the near future is also a good reason to purchase it. Both Wi-Fi and wired connectivity worked as expected and setup was very easy. It has an option to change frame rates but be sure to only change to 60 fps if your TV has a fast response rate and runs at 120Hz or higher; otherwise, you may see some undesirable artifacts. The default 24 fps worked very well in all my tests. If you don't have a 4K streaming device like Roku or Amazon fire, you can use this player to stream Netflix or YouTube for instance with maximum resolution and rich colors. Both Netflix and LG UP970 support Dolby Vision which is another format of HDR with even more color enhancement. Again, a compatible TV is a must to take advantages of the technology. Before getting excited about the 2 HDMI ports, be sure to read the guide: it's a good addition but one of them is dedicated to audio for some legacy systems. The only cons in my opinion are: 1) the remote that feels somewhat cheap; 2)no DLNA support which makes it not a good replacement for streaming players if you host your own movies on your home network; 3) sometimes if makes a loud noise when playing some movies but it does not happen with all. Planet Earth and a couple of others played silently.

The packaging was easy to open, hook up was easy and the remote came with a battery (no HDMI cable though). Set up was very quick with an easy to use menu structure. The profile is slim and not too deep, it fit well in the shelf of my TV stand. I hooked up to my Epson Home Cinema 4000 3LCD Projector with 4K Enhancement and HDR and tried it with both the UHD disc and the Blu-ray of 'Ghost in the Shell' and then streamed a movie from Netflix and a couple of 4K videos from YouTube. Loading times were quick, the 4k disc looked awesome and the BR disc up-scaled nicely and I could not tell a difference between the two. The streaming from both sites was good, about the quality the Blu-ray had been The only downside was that the unit only provided me options for streaming Netflix and YouTube - I am a prime member and also have a collection of Ultraviolet films, so this was a bit of a downer. All in all, it was a good experience and I will get some good use out of this unit. No complaints other than the limited options for streaming - so you may want to consider this before buying. Hopefully a future software upgrade will expand the options.

It is not any better than my old opponent which only did 4k up scaling. It made mechanical noise which I did not like for music. Returned to store and bought the UB 900 Panasonic player, sometimes you can not save money and get what you want.

I just recently shipped to LG since Best buy did not take it back after only 30 days! Every 4k movie I played either skipped or froze about half way into the movie. I watched about 5 total in 30 days. I would not buy this unit or even brand again.

I had been looking for a new Blu-Ray player now that I got a 4K TV. I wanted to take advantage of being able to play 4K discs as well as regular Blu-Ray's and also older DVD''s. This thing does it all! It was very easy to set up and get going with it. I had it out of the box and was up and running and connected to my wireless network in probably 5 minutes. This is now my go-to box because not only can it play all the different disc formats. It also has Netflix and YouTube as well, both of which I can stream 4K content to my TV. I started out with some older DVD's/ . I was amazed at how good they looked. I don't know what this box does to upscale them...but they look fantastic. Then I tried a regular Blu-Ray disc and it was just as expected. Great picture and sound quality. Then finally I put in a 4K Blu-Ray disc and was amazed at how crisp and clear it looked. The sound was also amazing too. I know some people have said there was not a lot of bass...I say...crank up the bass on your sound bar or stereo system and you wont even notice it. It had my Bose system rumbling like crazy...so there was definitely no lack of bass. If there was one thing I might change about this player was the design. Its basically just a black box. There is no display or anything on it at all. So it isn't much to look at...but if you want a way to be able to watch lots of great content from many different sources...this is all you need!

First off the LG UP970 is a solid attempt at making an ultra HD Blu-ray player. While its clearly not the best on the market it does a great job at for what it does, The HDR playback is flawless and amazing, the 4K is breathtaking. I used this LG UP970 player on a LG 4K OLED TV (65EF9500 / HDR 10 only.) and it is a sight to behold. I normally streamed 4K with YouTube and Netflix without buying physical media...but I think all this charges today seeing how the quality. 4K disc playback for all the disc media that's important of today. CDs/DVDs/Blu-Rays all work here but what you are paying for is the superb quality of Blu-ray in 4K and HDR. There is nothing like seeing something like this with all the right equipment, I finally have a decided 4K which is something my PlayStation 4 Pro CANNOT DO. (for the life of me , I can't understand why didn't Sony put one in there?) and my home feels like a real cinema. HDR is the very thing you should be buying this player for because it is simply breathtaking to see all these colors pop right in front of your eyes. Bolder contrast and more vibrant colors strikes the screen but none of this matters if you don't have a TV that support HDR. Honestly nothing should be left to say about a player that supports the format, HDR isn't something that should be talked about it should be seen! I swear to you the movie "The Revenant" made me feel like I was in the heart of the forest, Deadpool have such mindblowning colors, and if you want to really showcase your TV just pop in the movie "Ghost in a shell" which IMO pushes HDR colors to your pupils like due to its visually striking shots! Color Accuracy is spot on! It all works fine and well and the audio does it the sweet spot. ARC is also here in this player which is much needed if you want a easy setup sound experience. There is a USB on the player as well and plays the video formats MPEG-1, MPEG2 PS/TS, MPEG4 AVC (H.264), SMPTE VC1 (VC-9), MKV, AVC, AVCHD, M4V, WMV, 3GP, MP4, MOV, FLV, VOB, TS, DAT, DivX, DivX HD, RMVB, and K3G. So I'm sure whatever movies you have saved on an HDD will play on the UP970. There are some cons to this player. Software is bad, its slow and clunky. It take ages to navigate to an area such as settings. Come on LG or anyone that is an OEM make better software for these 4k Blu-ray players. LG, please listen you have Web OS, Stick it on this thing. This player does not come with an HDMI cable at all so if you thought you came prepared..no. You need to buy the HDMI cables or already own 4K HDMI cables. There is no front LED to display time, The box also gets loud when playing Blu-ray 4K HDR and that is troubling. is it as bad as everyone say? No its not but its maybe be distracting to some people. The remote feels cheap, DLNA streaming is gone and not here which seems like a step backwards, and perhaps worst of all there are only two...yes TWO streaming apps. About the two streaming apps Netflix and YouTube are the only ones here when you use Wifi or Ethernet. One would argue why need more? all of your devices can stream everything else? My question why even add these at all if you not going to go all out? This had to be a passing attempt for LG to keep up with others on the market but I would have rather have had more killer features then just Netflix and YouTube apps if you can't have more. Hulu needs to be here, Crunchyroll, HBO... Or you know atlease just add Chromecast and let google handle this thing. While I'm impressed with what the LG UP970 can do its hard to be impressed with the device itself. If you getting this for a cinema experience like no other with 4K/HDR Blurays and don't care about anything else then by all means get this product. Besides I'm sure that's the main reason why anyone would get this player but it doesn't do anything else great and certainly there are better players out there with Netflix, Youtube and a whole lot more. As it stands I would still recommend LG UP970 4K Ultra HD Bluray. It does what it suppose to do and does it fantastic, even if its ugly while doing these task. I'm happy I added this to my OLED LG HDTV because nothing else showcase movies better right now.

I have this paired with my LG OLED E6 series. First thing after plugging it in, I updated the firmware, this allowed YouTube to work. Future updates will enable Dolby Vision according to LG. After the firmware update completed, first thing we watched was Planet Earth II 4K. TV recognized the HDR signal automatically and it was absolutely stunning! It was like the sloth and other animals were right in front of us. I have never experienced TV this lifelike. I noticed no issues with banding or anything else, picture was perfect. I am sending the video through my Yamaha 4K receiver which should just be passing through the video to the TV. We have also watched Deadpool and it looked great as well, but Planet Earth II really shows off 4K HDR's true potential. Compared to the other options out there, this is the only reasonably priced player that has committed to Dolby Vision, this is why I chose it over the other 4K players available.
