Good 4K Player But Not the Best
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The LG UP970 4K UHD player is not what I expected and fell far short of my expectations, especially compared to the competition at this price range. The Player worked fine when it came to playing movies, though it did have some issues with some movies especially some early Sony Titles of making a humming which then went away as the movie went on, but it was noticeable. The picture quality was just as good as other players on the market the only issue again was the hum with certain discs. Yet I had two big issues with the player that really soured me on it that are things LG could fix with a firmware update. The first is every time the player tries to reconnect to my network or loses connection to my network it display a pretty decent size picture of a globe with an airplane on it. It is incredibly distracting when you are watching a movie, with any of my other devices or players I never had anything like happen so often when watching movies. I even went into the menu to see if i could turn off the connection to my network as I did not need while watching movies and there is no option in the system to turn off the Wifi My second Issue is the app selection is almost non existent, especially if someone is looking to buy a player that will play their movies but also stream for them they are limited to Netflix and youtube. Both apps work well on the system but it is disappointing that they do not have any other options. Hopefully LG adds more apps to the system. This Player is the only one from the big 3 companies that will support Dolby Vision so if you have a tv that supports Dolby Vision this might be the player for you, but at the time of this writing the firmware update to add support has not come out yet. If you do not need Dolby Vision I would probably pass on this player until LG can fix some the issues it has.

Great Dedicated 4K Blu Ray Player - Lacking Apps
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great player and the first 4K Blu Ray player that I've encountered that made me think it could be a better 4K Blu Ray player than the Xbox One S. The device itself is quite wide - about 17 inches, so be prepared for that. On the back you get an optical audio output and 2 HDMI ports; one for the TV and one for audio only. This is handy if you have an older receiver that can process 4K HDR and want to get the disc audio without losing the picture quality. There's also a USB port on the front for flash drives. It should be noted that this does NOT include an HDMI cable in the box, so make sure you have one handy or purchase one separately. After I hooked up the player up to my receiver and brought up the main menu it became clear that this is a 4K Blu Ray player first and everything else second. There are a few AV settings to mess with, 2 apps (just Netflix and YouTube), and the interface for watching stuff off the USB port. The Netflix and YouTube apps both work fine and both support 4K content (including HDR on Netflix). I was a little put off by this at first, but the simplicity of being able to watch 4K Blu Ray discs without having to deal with everything else on my Xbox One S was pretty refreshing. I'm still disappointed about the lack of apps and hope LG adds more in the future. We watched Arrival on 4K Blu Ray and it looked great playing through the LG player - there were no hiccups or glitches in the playback throughout the entire time we watched the movie. Overall I'm pretty impressed with this player. There's not a lot of us out there interested in buying movies on disc anymore, but if you're one of those people and you're not into the Xbox then this might be the one for you.

Very good player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this player along with a LG 65" OLED. Not much point in a 4k tv if you can't play some 4k Blu-Rays on it. As expected the player produces great picture and sound on 4k discs. I am thankful that LG provides two HDMI outputs so that I can watch the 4k discs and not have to upgrade my AV Receiver right now as it not pass through a 4k video signal. I just ran 1 HDMI to the TV and 1 to the stereo. What surprised me is how great my standard blu ray discs look when played on this machine. The picture is almost as good as the 4k discs! It is my understanding the player is upconverting the blu rays and this is why.

Awesome Blu-ray player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This new LG 4K Ultra HD bluray player is one of the best I've own so far. It was easy to set up , plug your HDMI cable to your tv and soround system and you good to go. You can connect this player with your Internet either wireless or wired. The set up was fast since my wifi router is in my room. Make sure you buy a 4K HDMI ultra HD cable to make the best experience with your movies. I haven't try yet the 3D discs but I'm sure it's going to look as awesome as my bluray and DVD collection. It also include premium content like YouTube and Netflix. My movies look awesome with this bluray.

Bring Out The Best In Your 4K TV!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been craving to match up my 4k TV which I've had for a little over a year now with the latest and greatest video format for quite some time. I must say that it is the first time since going from a VHS player to the DVD player in my Playstation 2, that I have noticed a dramatic difference in picture quality on whatever TV I had at the time. Now that doesn't mean that I haven't seen upgrades when moving up the ladder in TV quality or when moving from DVDs to BluRay but I also tended to do both at the same time, so perhaps I just took it for granted that the picture was going to be nicer. I've also gotten spoiled with all the retina displays and such on phones, tablets, and computers, that maybe I only notice differences when it is a dramatic drop in quality! That being said, I was truly impressed with this new LG 4k Ultra HD BluRay player. At the time I got the player I also purchased an Ultra HD copy of the documentary Planet Earth II so I could really see what everything was about and boy did my eyes enjoy the show. Colors are SOOOO rich and the detail is razor sharp. Now I actually feel like I have a 4k TV! When looking at what player to buy I watched some reviews on YouTube and read some others on different sites and the only thing that worried me about the LG was that a couple of people mentioned 'artifacts' or 'banding' on the screen but I have not seen this at all using either the new HD BluRays or regular BluRays. I'm wondering if they have their TV set to upscale the signal which I know my TV said specifically not to set it to do if there is a 4k signal coming in because the upscaling will actually make things look worse. I don't know but that is all I can think of for why others may have seen that. I really only have one complaint with the LG UP970 and that is its size. It isn't really any heavier than the BlueRay player it replaces but is several inches wider to the point that I used to have the player and my cable box next to each other on the media center shelf but now I have to have the cable box on top and it doesn't look as nice. I can't see why LG would have to make it that much wider but it does seem to be the style for these new systems because the others I looked at were also wider. Oh well, it is more than made up for with the quality of the picture. Oh, and the price of the HD BlueRays too, that is a bit of a grumble but new media sources have always cost more when they first roll out. I'm hoping that soon the HD disks will become standard and they will pack in regular BluRays they way they pack in DVDs with many of the latest disks.

Plain on the outside but blu rays look great
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This looks very plain & cheap on the outside, only a few buttons on the front & its small which that isn't a bad thing. We connected it to our LG 4K tv & set up was very easy , probably the easiest I've ever done, select language, network, password & you're set up. I put different blu rays in , including a ultra 4K , that movie is very dark so it was hard to tell how good it looked. When I played Toy Story, it looked amazing, all the textures & patterns felt like I was in the movie. Tried a few older movies & they looked pretty good too. This has a nice size remote with some cool features, like a home button & scene selection which plays from that point or you can keep searching. You can view pictures , Netflix, you tube, screen share, regular dvds, 3D blu rays & photos . For the price I think the features & looks are a bit basic but the quality of the playback makes it worth it.

Tons of features and great picture quality.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.LG now has an Ultra HD player that is an affordable option for those who have a 4K TV. My first impression was that the build quality seemed a bit on the plastic side. The player doesn’t come with much in the way of instructions but really you just set it up like most modern AV devices, that is, plug in the HDMI cable to your AV receiver or TV. Going through the setup wizard was quick and easy if not a bit bland. That is about it as the only other thing in the box is the remote. Missing is the HDMI cable. I don’t agree with any manufacturer's decision to leave out the HDMI cables. It is always a plus when the manufacturer supplies the correct cable so that was a disappointment. If you are using a 4K TV you need an HDMI cable rated for 18 GBs. And keep in mind that this player will work with non 4K TVs just fine. Clearly that’s not what this player is for but if you are in the market for a disk player this one is very close to future proof. The only disks formats it doesn’t support is DVD Audio and SACD. These are music only audio formats and if you're using those disk types you probably already have a player for them. This is a feature rich player that supports HDR (High Dynamic Range), 4K streaming, DVD, Blu-Rays, USB and External HDD playback with both Ethernet and WiFi connections. For HDR and Dolby Vision you will need a newer 4K TV that supports these formats. Don’t worry though as the picture quality here is among the best you can get from any player on any TV. For me I just plugged in the HDMI 1 connection to my receiver. There is an HDMI 2 connection on the back but it's labeled as audio only. For streaming Netflix with Dolby Vision and HDR support is the star here, again if your TV supports these formats and finally 4K YouTube is here as well. I felt like the remote was well done. I don’t have an LG TV so I used it to control the player and it felt very good in my hands. I think this is a very competitive offering in the Ultra HD player space. It compares well with the competition and for those that are lucky enough to have a high end 4K TV this is a very nice addition. For those that don’t it is still a very nice player and as prices for the high end TVs with HDR and maybe Dolby Vision come down this is probably the most future proof player currently available.

Good Blu-Ray Player, But Lacks Many Features
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup was a breeze, with easy-to-follow menus. You can connect via Ethernet or WiFi. There are two HDMI outputs: one for newer receivers and TVs and one for older receivers to connect audio only. For an entry-level Blu-Ray player, this does a great job of making movies look better, compared to my previous players. It was also quiet and loaded discs quickly. I was disappointed in the lack of apps and ability to stream from other sources. Since I already have a TV that includes these features, this was not an issue for me, but I wanted to note this just in case you expect this Blu-Ray player to upgrade your entertainment center. Pros Improved picture quality compared to my older players Cons Only two apps: Netflix and YouTube Remote has too many buttons compared to competitors I would recommend this player to someone who already owns a newer TV and was looking for a no-frills Blu-Ray player. Hopefully LG will update this player to include more apps and support for streaming.

Simple but great quality
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There are plenty of reviews out there that mention the lack of settings and apps but what it lacks isn't really needed if you have an audio receiver that can decode the digital audio signal through HDMI and a Smart TV that has good streaming capabilities. It's a simple player with high end performance. Dolby Vision support came back in a mid February 2018 firmware update. Even though it only has Netflix and YouTube the apps work great. Netflix has Dolby Vision and I've also seen HDR work in YouTube. As of now the only other UHD Blu-ray player with HDR10 and Dolby Vision costs over twice as much. I was blown away by the PQ and lossless audio in the HDR version of Dunkirk. I forgot how much is missed when just streaming. I have this hooked up to an LG B7 and connected to a Denon receiver through ARC. My only criticism is I would like to see this a bit more WebOS like. I had thought it would integrate well with the LG TV's "Magic Remote" but it looks and feels like it was made by a completely different company. The remote does work, just not the on screen pointer.

Solid Basic Player Ready to Expand Capabilities
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The LG - UP970 - 4K Ultra HD 3D Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-Ray Player is a capable unit that does it's job very well. A promised update will bring Dolby Vision capabilities to it soon, which will round out it's basic feature list. This player is the start of my move towards 4K, Ultra HiDef, Dolby Vision, etc. Therefore, I can't comment on the Hi Res quality. However, it has already done a great job of making my standard Blu-rays look even better on my existing TV. As has been mentioned by others, there's only Netflix and YouTube 4k wifi streaming options and we can only hope that list will be expanded by future updates (as when Dolby Vision is added). For now, I just can't wait to get my Ultra HD TV!

Nice blue ray player.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The picture quality is pretty good. A lot of details show and it does a great job contrasting. I like that it has the ability to stream as well. But that said, for now it lacks where you can stream from. If going to have wifi, why not have a way to use internet and allow to stream from any source. This is limited to Netflix and YouTube. Overall I am happy with this blue ray player. The limited streaming ability is a downside. Would love to see more options. Or like I said, just the freedom to use internet and go to streaming sites. Surprised that they only had 2 options and not even Hulu as an option. And I am sure there are plenty more.

A nice choice
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup and connecting to wireless was pain free. I have an AC router and this has AC compatibility which works great. I was able to stop using the hard wired ethernet connection I had to use with prior blu-ray player due to dropping signal using N wireless connection. Really surprised that it has only Netflix and Youtube for apps and seemingly no way to add others at this time. Granted I think these are the only ones that have 4K content - but really, I want my Amazon at least! Picture (streaming or blu-ray) is great. Remote is easy to use once you get used to it, as is tad different functionality from what I was used to. Also it didnt come with the user guide included but going out to LG site provided it. I needed to know how to set the remote to work with my TV. I didnt check out the 3D capabilities as I dont have any 3D blu-rays/content and lets face it 3D is slowly and painfully fading away anyway. For bd-live you will need to connect a usb drive formatted using fat32. Since there is only 1 usb connector you can do either bd-live or connect an external HDD to view saved movies/pics/videos - not both. Makes no sense to me but does seem to be the "standard" in looking at other players. I never use bd-live so no issue for me - but could be an irritation to others. Good news is it recognizes HDD larger than 2TB that use GPT rather than MBR partitioning- and NTFS format. I attached a 4TB external drive and it picked it up - no -problem. Just 2 months ago I purchased a (competitors) 1080P blu-ray player and it did not recognize the same drive. Also twice as fast in HDD recognition as unit it is replacing. The other thing I am happy to report is it recognizes the closed caption(s) I have embedded in my videos using m2ts format. However you cant just press the caption button - you must use info/menu then go to options and its about the 4th option down to turn on/off. This is important to us with "old" ears. All of the options/menus are pretty easily navigated Playing blu-rays it is very quiet and easily navigated. One disc was Avatar - and it immediately came up with a message that it needed additional storage using USB - I chose continue (ignored it) and it seemed to play fine. I connected it to my receiver using the digital fiber optic option. It does have an audio only HDMI which I didnt try. It sounds good to me all hooked up. Its big. Same size as an old blu-ray player I still have from 2008 and twice as big as most current 1080P blu-ray players. Overall a very nice unit but hope they add more apps quickly!!!!

It's just ok, nothing really special
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This DVD player has all of the bells and whistles to match today's technology. 3D, 4K, Blu-ray, wireless streaming, etc, etc. I connected this to an Epson projector through my Yamaha receiver and also to my Hitachi 4K TV. Both were impressive, although the Hitachi provided an overall better quality picture. With that being said, I'm just not sure that I really have a need for a DVD player anymore. I can stream just about any movie I want to watch through my DirecTv, my PC, Apple TV or whatever. 4K DVD's cost upwards of $25-$30 and most of the time, I may only watch a movie once or twice. It will get to a point when I have to ask, how much better or a picture do I need? How much more space am I going to take up storing DVD's and CD's when I can get digital versions at any time? To get back to the review, the DVD player itself works well and was easy to setup and has some ability to improve the viewing experience within settings. I played a few Blu-ray actions movies and found them pretty good, but that will also depend on the TV you are using and not just the DVD player. Not sure this is worth $300, but if you must have a device that plays and streams 4K content, this isn't a bad choice. I cant say that I would recommend it unless you have a preference for hard copies of your media versus streaming options. If you do, then this may work for you, but for me, I'll pass.

4K UHD with HDR10 and Dolby Vision capability
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased the LG UP970 UHD Blu-Ray player at Best Buy (Hixson--Gunbarrel didn't have the right one) for $229 on sale. I have the following to report: 1) Hookup was a simple breeze. Easy to switch out the old with the new. The UP970 has two HDMI-outs--one for Video and one for Audio (1.4); however, the one for Video supports 4K HDR Video/Audio (2.0a per Google), so if you want to run video and audio through a receiver, use this one only. 2) The settings to output 2160, Audio, etc, were simple--just set to AUTO. 3) I tested several discs, and I can report: a) It loads quite fast. I tested ALIEN 1080p Blu-Ray as the Alien discs in the Anthology on my LG BD370 took almost a whole minute from closing the door to even registering a picture on the screen. The UP970 had the disc playing in about 23 seconds, which is a much-needed improvement. b) 4K discs loaded quickly, and my TV (Vizio P65-C1) immediately flashed "2160 HDR10" on the screen identifying the signal. Blade Runner Final Cut 4K loaded in about 15 seconds. c) Some of the reviews on Best Buy talked about sound being low. I don't understand this because Blu-Ray players aren't receivers that send sound to speakers. I had to turn Blade Runner down because the Dolby Atmos w/TrueHD Soundtrack was just beyond amazing and loud. As of right now, the UP970 is marketed as supporting HDR10 and "will" support Dolby Vision with a firmware update. The update was released, but there were some issues so it is being reworked. I spoke via chat window with LG, and they stated that the updated release could possibly be as soon as 2017-Q4, which means this year. For me, that's fine as I do not have any DV discs (all of my 4K UHD DV is DigitalHD through VUDU that I can stream through TV). Last, but not least, I bought a unit that was manufactured in August 2017, per the label on the box. The March 2017 batch did have issues with making loud sounds during playback. I can report the August 2017 version I have is whisper quiet when playing both 1080p BDs and 2160p 4K UHDs. So, if you've been holding off on buying a 4K UHD BD because of exorbitant cost, I recommend the LG UP970 from a batch that is NOT from March 2017. I think you'll be quite pleased!!

Blu-Ray players have come a long way
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is probably my 5th Bluray player, now stepping up to 4k (I have 5 4k TV's). My first observation was how much faster the processing os the disk was; in under 2s thes display was ready to go, compared to early BluRays that too way over 10s to get ready this was a pleasant start. The remote is nearly identical to the remote's LG has been using for years, which it was back lit, but it's not, learned to live with it. Initially watched the Std version of King Kong (Jack Black and cast) and this player delivered a better, more crisp image, darker blacks, cleaner shadows than my existing DB670, did from the same disk, this player not only handles 4K material well it also improves conventional BluRay disks another plus, I was not sure I'd be able to see. I also think the sound was cleaner, but this is pretty subjective. Then on to The Ultra Disk version of King Kong (Jack Black and new Skull Island). At first it was a little underwhelming, what I'd just seen looked great, I'd maybe expected the 4K version to be so much better (on a 65" Sony X900e), well initially is was just better, but as the action got more intense the quality of fast moving images the picture improved, they we more three dimensional, the shadows had more content to them, the wide angle shots were gorgeous. With really no way to compare side by side images, the original blu ray, seemed flatter, the 4K version was voluptuous (in a good way) just more ripe with detail, Maybe when I eventually get a 4K projector it will be that much better on a 100" or 150" screen (I can certainly see where larger screens would benefit the most. Still the picture was engulfing, with some of the overhead shots feeling like you were there flying along. The New King Kong Skull Island definitely benefited from improved animation and special effects, but not necessarily a better plot or characters, the Extended Edition of the jack a Black version was my favorite. I then viewed the 4K version of Ghost in a Shell, again the colors and cinematography were out standing, and with the mvis have many "dark" scenes, this player and it's picture were outstanding. I'm officially a fan of 4K films. When I first thought about paying about ten dollars more per film, (about a 25% increase), I had to think twice; I'd hope this premium drops as the format gains wider acceptance, and as older films are re-released it looks like it will. Do I like the LG-UP970, heck yes. It improves my existing collection of DVD's and BluRays (over 500), It's faster than previous BluRays, the built in WiFi and LG Smart app's are nice, but nothing new. The quality of the output from 4K disk, is new, and much more rich in color and texture than what was previously available. Put your 4K TV investment to work, give it some quality images in, and I;m sure you'll be please with what you see from the growing list of 4K films out there.

Not wowed
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So out of the box I am not impressed at all. The unit is very plastic and feels cheap, along with the remote. That metal looking top is just plastic and loves finger prints. The remote isn't a huge deal if you have a harmony or universal remote. Boots up quickly which is a huge plus. Once fired up the settings are very basic and the menu is pretty boring. The only apps you will get to enjoy is YouTube and Netflix. After watching two movies and a few hours of online content here is my verdict. The picture is very nice on my 4K tv and I had no complaints, the audio however lacked bass and that pop. My Klipsch RF7II's have never let me down before but with this 4K player I was back in my receiver settings trying to figure out what went wrong. I wasn't able to get it sounding much better. If you are more of an audiophileist then I can't recommend this player but if you are a visualist and the audio is just coming from your tv speakers or a sound bar then go for it. If I could I would give this unit 3.5 stars and say maybe I would recommend to a friend but I don't have either of those options. If the price point was lower I would adjust my rating to compensate, I just don't feel like it competes with other units in this range.
