Disappointed
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I will start out by saying that I've used the first 4k player by Samsung and also more recently, the Xbox 1s for 4K UHD viewing. The physical size of the unit is surprisingly rather long, but has a very cool looking finish. Does not get too hot, which is very nice. Unfortunately, this LG player only has 2 apps to stream: YouTube & Netflix. For the amount LG is asking for this player, that seems a bit underwhelming. The picture quality seemed ok, but nothing more than anyone else is producing in 4K BD players. Again, for the price (around $300), this lowered the overall score. Lastly, the main reason of my score was the noise this player makes. This LG player is plain LOUD when compared to an Xbox 1s. My headphones drowned out the noise, but really hurt the experience. Seems the drive LG used should be replaced asap.

LG UP970 4k UHD blu-ray
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Let me start by saying I don't have a 4k tv. That being said, I rented Fast & Furious on Blu-ray and it played flawlessly and the picture was fantastic. It is supposed to upscale - how can you ever know if it does? Remote is easy to use and very basic. The player itself is very simple. No bells and whistles here. If you're looking for apps, there is Netflix and You Tube only but if you have a smart TV, you don't need those on your Blu ray anyway. There is no front display on this player. It doesn't REALLY matter but I do miss it if at least for the time watched or remaining. The hook up was simple enough. There are 2 HDMI outputs (1-sound, 1-video), which confuses me since the idea of HDMI is to combine sound and video. I hooked it up to my sound bar via the video HDMI which is connected to my TV via HDMI. It worked fine. The unit didn't automatically update the software during setup. I had to search through the menu to find where the update can be requested. Overall, I think it is a fine Blu ray player but for the price I'm not able to really push it due to not having a 4k tv. Personally, I don't know what makes it worth the expensive price tag. LG is a good brand, but I'm sure there are also better less expensive options out there.

Well positioned by price, average in performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The LG - UP970 4K Blu-Ray player is fairly pedestrian in its presentation and construction. I've had the pleasure of testing this unit out connected to a LG OLED panel and can report that picture & audio quality overall is about average compared to other unit I've demo'd. For it's price-point most people should find it suitable for their needs. A few of the things that did notice - not expecting a 'flag ship' experience - do dampen my enthusiasm about this model. The unit does power up & initialize fairly quickly but disc loading was about average. The basic set up screens are easy to read and are logically arranged but controls overall were still basic. One of my biggest pet peeves with Blu-Ray players is their ability to sync up the audio stream and I'm disappointed to report that LG has missed the mark on getting consistent the audio decoder hardware in this device to work smoothly. Across many different movie discs I noticed significant lag in the audio kicking in after the actual movie has started - sometimes in the realm of 2 or more seconds of delay. Once the movie was going though, there were no noticeable drops in the audio stream. I also didn't encounter any picture freezes or need to power cycle the player due to things locking up - which is a good thing. The up-scaling of 1080p movies to 4K left a bit to be desired. I noticed quite a bit of flicker and frame jump on a few movies but it wasn't consistent and is probably something that can be resolved with a future firmware update. True 4K performance was clearly better. The physical construction of this player is on the weak side. We found that the disc tray button wasn't always responsive to the first touch and the remote control feels little cheap - and designed like an afterthought. The unit is overall quiet in operation considering it's light weight construction but it certainly lacks that solidly built heft one might expect when taking it out of it's box and setting it up. Considering the price point for this unit - especially when it's on sale - one really can't complain though. I would recommend the LG - UP970 Blu-Ray player to anyone looking for a good, 'middle of the road' unit at a decent price.

Loud on some disks
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First: So far Planet Earth II, The Martian, and IMAX: Journey to Space all produce a loud vibration that can be heard 12 feet away. The unit was sent back to LG for repair but the problem was not resolved (Build date was March 2017). Took it back to BB and exchanged for another unit (Build date June 2017). Same issue. 2nd: For those complaining about a lack of apps for me I have multiple devices that have plenty of apps (Nvidia Shield TV, LG E6 and others). That being said LG E6 OLED Youtube app does not support HDR were as the UP970 does. I am disappointed in this device for the loud noise. As for the reset of the device it works. The image is great and setup is quick and easy. Enough options for most people.

Great 4k player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If this is supposed to be a budget player, it works just fine. It may not have all the components that the Oppo or the new Panasonic's have, but for 4k movie watching it's great. The app selection is nothing, but it does show 4k hdr hlg YouTube videos. If you can't get this on sale, I'd pick it up!

Best (1st) 4k player I've ever owned
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had recently upgraded to a LG 3D 4k TV but was advised by the BB clerk to wait until the UP970 came out so I wouldn't have to buy a 2nd 4k-player when Dolby Vision compatible discs become the new thing. So I waited over a month before being able to watch 4k on the TV. I purchased the Up970 4 days ago. I knew ahead of time that a firmware update will be needed down the road. I haven't tried any of the apps yet. For my 1st 4k experience, used the Grand Canyon disc that is on sale. I was thoroughly impressed with the additional detail to scenic views. I'm happy with the purchase other than paying full price when it is 1st released. I was antsy to just see 4k at home on the new TV and it did not disappoint. 2.0 cable. Only reason for 4 stars is releasing before all features ready but will enjoy it more when new features are available. Had no issues with noise or video quality. Only problem was when it goes to screensaver mode after being on Pause for too long, you can't just hit Play. I have to go back to main menu, click Play Movie and then it resumes where it left off.

Fast and easy to use
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There isn't much to say about this 4K player. If you have a 4K TV and are willing to invest in Ultra Blu-rays, this is the model to get. I was an early adopter in 4K so I don't have the fancy HDR. But Ultra Blu-rays still look fantastic. While I don't purchase Blu-rays as much as I used to, I still like owning physical copies and adding them to my library. Anyways, back to the task at hand, this player is incredible light and easy to use. It's about 18 inches wide, which is the standard width for home theater equipment, but it's not very deep. That's not a problem as long as you stack your player on top of something (assuming you have enough AV equipment to stack), but you won't be able to put say, a cable box, on top of the player. It has two HDMI ports, although one is for audio only and then a power plug (and optical audio). So it's easy to set up. I thought the menus of the player look kind of dated, and having WiFi is nice for any firmware updates. The WiFi also allows you to watch Netflix etc., but if you're getting this player, you are likely the person to have already established your streaming services and how you play them, so that feature is probably moot. (It is for me, I still use Apple TV for my streaming video services). Performance wise, this thing is great. I recall the first Blu-ray players taking minutes, sometimes 10, to load a disc. This player boots up in no time. The picture quality speaks for itself. It's 4K. If you get an Ultra Blu-ray and play it on your 4K TV through this player, it is going to look fantastic. I have had zero issues loading discs. And again, the picture quality has been phenomenal. (Get Planet Earth II!!!)

Not bad!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Simple review: Yes, for the cost which compared to competitors out there this is a great value for the quality you get. I'd buy this! Long Review: Let's start with the unpacking. I'm a fan of manufacturers taking that extra cushion here and wrap there. This product does not disappoint it looks like its got a little bed made of Styrofoam. One thing I was surprised about was the remote control only needs one AAA battery. It of course does not provide an HDMI cable which I'm not a fan of but lucky this replaced an old Blu-ray player that broke so not a deal breaker. Once you plug it in and play a movie is where this unit shines. Keep in mind though that three out of 5 of my HDMI's would not work on it. Can't say why as some were brand new and others were a couple years old which a mix of both worked. The picture that it pushed to my 4K TV that I bought last year was fantastic. Which I did not have any 4K movies only regular Blu-ray's. I felt the picture was better on this unit than my last Blu-ray player. It did end up convincing me to buy a 4K movie to try it on which you won't be surprised....it was amazing!!! The only negative I have for this player is it's Smart apps. I tend not to use them on players like this as I use smart boxes designed specifically for that but the app selection was small and some app were just junk. If that's important to you I'd look a little longer to make sure this is the right one for you. After it's all said and done. I like It! Yes I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a quality player at a price that I think is competitive. Hope my review helped you in your decision. Thanks

Great Video and Audio Quality, WIP on Features
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It seems as though LG is pulling ahead of the game in picture and sound quality for audiophiles. They go out of their way to work with premiere labs to make products that reproduce the artists' intended outcome as closely as possible. Like Pioneer and Pannasonic did in the Plasma TV era. This product is the same. Great at producing quality image and sound, however lacking on features. A device at this level and price point should rival Roku Premiere and Amazon Fire TV in streaming features. Sony Bluray players do this. This device right now only has Netflix and Youtube - not nearly enough. One thing I really like - I hooked this up to my LG OLED657C and SIMPLINK worked really well. There is a button on my magic remote that pulls up functions on screen that you can find on a standard media player remote to allow you to control the player. I can turn the player On and Off using the TV remote too. One pain point - no 'next chapter' button on SIMPLINK. Overall I am really happy. I would buy it again despite the shortcomings.

A Very Good Player with Added Features
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Note: This player does not come with an HDMI cable. Installation was straight forward after locating an HDMI cable. I used a hard wired network cable but there is the option of a wireless connection. There are installation instructions provided for ease of set up. I found the play output of the blu-ray disk (latest "Star Trek") to be very good quality with no delay in response from remote to the player - no stammering or pauses noted (which I've seen in others). Overall, a very responsive unit. Sound is good as well. I had a chance to try the addons - youtube and netflix and they worked as expected - if you've seen the apps on firestick, this is pretty much the same way here - again no lag with this unit - faster than the firestick 2 that I have. This rating reflects lack of hdmi cable which seems odd for the cost of the unit and the cost of the cable that could have been provided. There are no significant performance issues here so if you have a spare hdmi cable, this unit should be highly considered.

Good media player, not for streaming though
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're in the market for a 4k Blu-ray player, you could get this if need be. For the most part, this is primarily/mainly a media player. There are a couple streaming apps, literally a couple, and that's about it. You can stream YouTube or Netflix on this thing. In addition to the apps, you can attach devices to the player and view/play photos, movies and music. Basically, you have to add to the "functionality" of this unit. There are other 4k players out there that can do BOTH streaming and play 4k/blu-ray discs. Considering the price point for this, I would've expected a little more in the streaming department and functionality. Assuming this comes down in price, it might be a good bet for playing media but that's about it. The 4k player is nice and quality is good.

Slick Actual 4k playback
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Finally a choice besides Sony. I love the look of the of the player. it's a muted finish and not a finger print magnet. Mostly I love that it has actual buttons!. The player works great and as expected, It's very easy to set up and has just enough ports. LG also includes DOLBY vision ( even though there are no DVD's yet) But always being future proofed is a good thing.

Way too much noise for a high priced player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well, I read the reviews and I thought, all those reviews that complained about noise were probably just unique cases. Not so. I don't know what the deal is with this unit playing Sony 4K discs, but it can't do it without making all kinds of noise. I don't mean a small whirring noise, I mean this thing sounds like it's going to take off. It doesn't get better as the movie plays on, and it's definitely not a noise you can just get used to because in any of the softer or all dialogue parts of a movie, you hear it. It pretty much leaves you with two choices, don't buy Sony 4K discs, or just put up with the racket. I should say that it will play regular Sony Blue-Ray discs just fine. No extra noise. But that's really not a comfort unless 4K is not what you're buying this player for (even though it's loudly advertised all over the box that it plays 4K discs). What it does well is play Blue-Ray discs and most 4K discs just fine. The picture is clear and crisp. But really, most any 'ol Blue-Ray player on the market will do the same thing, and for less money. It has Netflix and YouTube... pretty standard also these days. It has WiFi which was very smooth to set up. And it also has a LAN port. Now that's at least something. Ports like this are getting harder to find because it's easy to just cram a wireless chip inside and call the network, “done”. I like to use LAN ports because that means it will be one less device on my already overused wireless network. That being said, it's not DLNA compatible, so forget about streaming any music, pictures or video from your network drive. Unless the drive is directly connected to the players' USB port, it will not be able to find any media on your network. To me, this is a basic 4K, Blue-Ray player which functions adequately for a basic player (unless you want to play a Sony 4K disc). It is certainly not worth the price tag it carries, even at 50 bucks off the price (which is what it's going for). For this price I would expect full network DLNA compatibility at the very least, especially when they've gone through the trouble of adding an Ethernet port, and I would without a doubt, expect it to play ANY 4K disc I put into it without making so much noise you have to turn your receiver up to 11!

Happy with this blu-ray player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. On the outside this blu-ray player looks nice but a tad bit simple. It has a black brushed metal look with no digital display and your normal open, play/pause, stop buttons and nothing more. I guess you technically don't need a digital display because you can access everything onscreen. You'll need a 4K television with HDR to get the full effect of this Bluetooth-ray player which I may say is awesome. It has 2 HDMI outputs, an Ethernet port also built in WiFi. It does not include any HDMI cables though. It does also have Netflix and YouTube apps installed. Comes with a small remote that takes only 1 battery. Overall it is a solid performer that I would recommend.

Where is the Dolby Vision?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ok I am giving this 3 stars for 2 reasons. First off I purchased an LG OLED 65C7P because Dolby Vision with the oled is clearly the best format/tv combo out there for 4k content. The player was a pain to connect to the internet the first player i hooked up connected fine and then somehow dropped the connection after watching Netflix just the night before and was great. Did the reset and tried to re connect several different ways (auto and manual) had to take the unit back. The first player had (August 2017 mfg date) little to none for being noisy and the player #2 (July 2017 mfg date) is already getting loud. So I may have to go for # 3 before the return/exchange period ends. (Lame!!!) And lastly WHERE is the Dolby VISION? This (Dolby Vision) is ultimately why I dropped the cash I did on the OLED65C7P tv and now the player. I would only recommend this player if the next one is not noisy and Dolby Vision is available.

Sound recognition needs work
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This unit works well for me as far as picture quality but I have trouble when it comes to HD movies audio. I will get audio during previews but when it comes to the movie I loose audio. Or I can have audio and pause my movie and when I resume play I will not have audio. It does not happen on all HD movies nor does it happen all the time. I can play a movie one day and it works fine but the next day I will try to play the movie and the problem happens. I usually can solve the problem by restarting the movie or turning everything off, ejecting the movie and starting over.

Great Upscaling!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As long as your TV can handle it, this Player will upscale your content to perfection, complete with its own set of visual settings! Its hard to tell which is truly performing when playing hi-end DVDs, but when it comes to playing older, lower-format materials, this DVD player is clearly in control! Have not tested the 3-D features since my current TV does not have that feature (my new one probably will), but everything else seems to work great. Would definitely recommend, even if just for the upscaling alone!

Great For Me!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm not as much an audiophile and videophile as I used to be, but for me this unit (LG UP970) is perfect for my needs. I don't yet have a 4K TV, but on my 1080P Plasma, this thing had impeccable picture. The setup was a breeze and the wireless speeds are excellent. I think the use of AC over N wireless network makes all the difference. I was able to stream Netflix without issue, but the only other app this has is YouTube. I didn't see a way to add another app, but it would have been great if Hulu and Amazon were options here. My guess is, because they don't offer 4K streaming, they're not included. Overall, this is an excellent entry level unit in the UltraHD 4K Blu-ray market and I would recommend to anyone.

Fast loading and excellent picture quality
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Time to load movie is very fast, example from closing the tray to first interactive screen: Wreck it Ralph blu-ray 10 seconds Ghost Buster 4k 25 seconds Ghost Buster blu-ray hd 20 seconds Picture quality is also excellent. It also does upsacling blu-ray to 4k. Very easy initial setup. Connect to 5GHz wifi with no problem. Also tested youtube in 4k and it is very fast and has easy to use interface. It could be better if it has the following 1. front panel display 2. manual indicate where is the IR receiver 3. backlit remote control
