I tried a range extender but after more research I decided a router upgrade was needed. My router is in the basement and my PC is on the 3rd floor. Signal strength went from 3 bars to 5 and speed went from 15-20 Mbps to over 90 Mbps without the range extender. Very easy setup and the network map is cool.

I have had issues with 2 major releases, Openwrt and DD-WRT. With OpenWRT there was issues with setting channels, and the router needed rebooting after 5 or 6 days of use. DD-WRT is more user friendly, but required a reboot every 2 days because the 2.4 Ghz side would no longer be able to access the WAN. I did go back to the OE Linksys firmware, while it is lacking some of the features of the other platforms at least it has been stable for now.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've dealt with quite a few routers in my time and ALL of them had a good signal up to a certain radius that gradually dropped down to 0 as you got out of range of it. But with this router, you get to it's max range and it just drops altogether, no signal at all. Just know about that ahead of time. If someone is in a spot that had weak signal with your old router, they may have no signal at all with this one.

The location where your wireless router and computer are placed affects the performance of your wireless network. To boost the wireless signal, it is ideal to place the wireless router either in the central part of your house or in a location free from any obstructions that may block its range. Adjusting the wireless channel is also a good move to avoid possible interference on your network.

Adjusting the wireless channel of the router and positioning the side antennas vertically could help improve the wireless range. Aside from interference, which is normally causing this challenge, the adapter of the wireless devices could also be a factor especially if they are not running on the same wireless standard as the routers. Although the bandwidth is stronger, the 5GHz signal has a limited range, since it was designed for short range high bandwidth transmission. If you have a device that you want to connect to the 5 GHz, it is recommended that it is on the same room for optimal usage. You can also try to use a range extender to improve the 5GHz range. Great router for home network
