My cable modem router combo is on the other side of the house and goes thought 5 walls and has better signal.

You can try to set a static wireless channel on the router to try and improve the signal, it could be possible that there are interferences that is conflicting with the router's signal. I work from home a lot and this has impacted my productivity. My old and slower wireless never dropped.
