"Smart" WiFi is reason alone to avoid Linksys

    Posted .

I am a longtime Linksys customer but will not be buying Linksys ever again since Linksys has gone downhill ever since Belkin acquired it. First I need to set up a Linksys "Smart" WiFi account just to access the settings to this router. This is a big turn-off since I want the freedom to use the device I paid for without having to register it. This should be my choice to register with Linksys or not. I also don't like the idea they have access to this router as I feel I should have the freedom to choose who has access to my house and not rely that Linksys will not abuse their access or fail to protect my information. Next big turn-off is the router keeps tabs on the browser I use and will refuse to allow me to connect if it deems my browser to be out-of-date. I should have the freedom to access my router settings without having the firmware check and see if my browser is up-to-date. I should have the right to use whatever browser I want to use to connect. Next big turn-off is that when I use my smartphone's Internet browser to attempt to connect, I am told that I need to download their stupid app in order to access my own router. Again, I should have the freedom to choose for myself if I want to use an app or a browser on my smart phone to connect. I'm sure even if I was able to access through my browser I will get a message that my browser isn't up-to-date and until I update it I cannot access my own browser. This is ridiculous and the software itself is my primary reason to dump this router. It was alright and problem free but the software alone made me hate this router with a passion.

    This router is horrible

After over 5 attempts and resetting it I gave up. None of the troubleshooting suggestions worked. It would start the process fine and loading up and doing everything it should, but then when you finally got near the end where you should start setting it up the router would lose connection. The light would start flashing and it would come up error connection lost on the computer screen. I gave up after the 5th attempt and wasted time.......unplugged it and plugged my other linksys router up and then it wanted to finish the process...so I think something was wrong with the router and really did not have the patience or the time after two hours to keep resetting. Maybe it is too smart for its own good? Anyway, my husband came into the store for a wifi extender and someone talked him into upgrading our router. He is returning this piece of junk today (keeping in mind our current connection and speed is fabulous) and will be getting the range extender that he came in for originally.

I am a firm believer that a product should be able to stand on its own merits; not suck less then its competitor. This is my 3rd Linksys router and I can honestly say, they get better and better

    Great Router for Price

The fact that you can access your router settings through an app. Give guest access to your router without giving them your password and prioritize what devices you want the router to focus on.

    No support, no connection

It claims an 'easy setu[' but nothing could be further from the truth. It does not open up to manage it until you sign up for an account. Then it requires some firmware update to even manage it. It won't connct to the 'Internet' port from a Comcast xFinity modem. It never reveals the management page for manual configuration. THis is minus five stars!!! GEEZZEES, Cisco, really? I'M A CISCO INSTRUCTOR for crying out loud! This is the worst product line I've ever seen for WiFi routing! DON'T GET THIS! Go to Netgear instead!

So far it is working well except I would have hoped for more coverage or more distance to be able to connect to wifi. 150 feet and it's gone.

    Linksys difficult to work with

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Bought this router and it went out after a year and a half. Call up Linksys and nothing that they can do. They admit that it is a factory default but will not stand behind their products or offer you a discounted one as a replacement. Needless to say you get what you pay for from these guys. The lid is solid plastic, doesnt allow for ventilation. It burns up just after their 1 year warranty period apparently. Go with any other company and save your moeny.

      Hi, Andy121212,

We feel sad to hear the inconvenience that you've encountered and we would like to offer a hand in diagnosing the cause why the router stopped working in short period of time. We look forward to assist you.

Total Garbage.... no range and slow

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Really bummed I bought this for my parents because the 5 year old Apple Airport extreme started randomly dropping. It appeared to be at the end of its life and they had new iPads, iMac and iPhones that all used AC wireless. I felt dumb buying them a $200 3-4 year old 6th gen Airport extreme so I cheaped out and bought this. Wasn't expecting anything crazy special but I did expect it to work. The range is laughable. They have a 1,200 square foot home, not brick walls. You walk 2 rooms away and you have almost no signal. They were getting 30mbs per second with the 5th Gen Apple Airport extreme and 1mbs on this thing !!! I fixed it by moving the location of the router but its max is still just 15-20 MBS. Sadly best buy doesn't let you return routers so they are stuck with this thing. 1 thing I can say positive for it is that it doesn't drop connection and it is pretty easy to add new things to your network & create your network. but the basic things like range and internet speed on this is total garbage.

      Hi Crzdcolombian,

Your neighbor’s wireless networks or any appliance that operates on the same frequency as your wireless device (e.g. 2.4 GHz) may cause interference affecting your wireless connection and signal. To resolve this, change the wireless channel on your router. The preferred wireless channels to use are 1, 6, and 11 since they’re considered non-overlapping channels.

Let us know if it does the trick at [email protected] with your contact details, location, review title, and the link to this post.

Used the 800 number to help with installation and glad I did. Only took about 30 minutes to get fully operational but would not have been able to do it on my own.

    Connectivity Issues

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This router was great when it stayed connected. It was not a wireless issue either as both wired and wireless connections would not work at times. Sometimes it worked for days and then all of a sudden have one day with sporadic connectivity until it just plain stopped working. Returned it within a week for the more expensive Asus AC68U. No connectivity issues there.

Might be okay if DNS worked properly

I use static DNS for OpenDNS for content filtering. Sad to say I couldn't get it working and it sounds like Linksys has no plans to fix the bug. I'm leaving a poor review and plan on trying the Netgear R6220 to see how it goes. See this link to other people with the same problem: https://community.linksys.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/WRT1900AC-s-DHCP-does-not-hand-out-the-specified-static-DNS/m-p/952861/highlight/false#M303709
