So far the best router I ever used

I've purchased multiple routers and extenders in the last year, which were ok and for the most part provided good signal around the house. Then I heard about this new Velop mesh wireless router system that gives you full bandwidth around the entire house so, Needless to say, I was excited to give it a try. When I opened the box I found 3 identical nodes, with 3 power plugs, a network cable and instructions. I started to setup the first node and I was immediately greeted with a few minor issues. The first was the power plug was too wide and it took up 2 to 3 slots on my power strip. The next issue was, there were only two ethernet ports and neither one was labeled. I took my chances and plugged my modem in the one on the left(which was correct) and began to configure the network using the app. The configuration app did have a bug which caused me to make 3 attempts to configure the node before it worked. Aside from that it was super easy to configure. The other nodes connected without issue. I configured my nodes with the same network name and password as my old router, in order to avoid reconfiguring all my devices. then I checked the app to see if all my devices connected, they all did with no issues. Now to talk about performance. Its been a few days and I've verified that When they said it will provide whole home coverage and allow for use of your full bandwidth, they were not exaggerating. Whether I'm in the basement or 2nd level, I get great signal and full speed from all three nodes. I probably only needed two. I've noticed absolutely no lag or connection issues at all! This is by far is the best router I ever used.

Set it up, started the painful process of changing the network in all my devices. Got about 20 of them done, when two of the nodes stopped working. Within minutes the third and hard wired one stopped. Could not get these back online for the life of me. Called help desk. They had me delete the system and reinstall them. Took a couple hours to erase/reboot the three and reinstall them. All that is after a hour plus of troubleshooting. While still on the line with the help desk all three nodes went out again. They asked me to start the process of reinstalling them again. Hung up, packed them up and returned them. Went back with my trusty Airports. Absolute garbage

Set up app is extremely difficult. I called customer service and after spending 10 minutes giving them my personal information, their only advice is to use the app. Not helpful in any way. As I cannot get any of the 3 nodes to connect to my internet, and I live in a small 1500 square foot house, I have to go with one star. I literally have spent 4 hours on this so far. Painful.

I will start by I first bought Google Wifi 3 pack. This did not work well for me as each router emits its own signal and signal strength would start our strong and then fade over time. Could not wait to try to trouble shoot collision etc. I then switched to Orbi AC3000 2 pack...Satellite would lose connection and drop off all devices attached. Tried this system and to date no drop offs. Setting up easy just need to make sure you do firmware update before attaching node or may give you trouble. App is decent however I would like to be able to see what devices are attached to what node in an easy straight forward manner. Speeds are ok and coverage is good. I believe are all good products but I had issues with Google and Orbi. If you need multiple ethernet ports and USB see if Orbi works well if you can tolerate the size of the units as they are big.

Doesn’t get anywhere near the advertised speeds, but to be fair I tried three brands and none of them get anywhere near advertised. I get 170Mbps tops right next to the main router, and I have a 1Gbps fiber line. Running speed tests at my computer hardline I get the 1gig, Velop WiFi right next to the computer 170Mbps. The rest of the house is 100-130Mbps with the other nodes. Not happy for the price they charge. Also, the nodes always disconnect. Once a week I get a notification on my phone that one of the nodes is offline and needs to be reset. First time I’ve tried Linksys, and it’ll be the last.

      Hello, Rusty,

The more networks that use the same channel, the worse the performance will be for each of the networking devices. Try running the channel finder feature of your Velop as it selects the channel with the least amount of traffic for each node in your system. Allow us then to have our Escalation Engineers assist you further by sending it through email at [email protected]. Please send along with your contact details too and the link of this review, for reference.

Purchased Jan. 2018. Started having problems July 2020. Had Geek squad come out Oct. 2020 to fix. Could not fix and was told others are having same problem and Linksys has no answer and will not replace or discount a replacement. Even though it was 2 yrs. and 8 mos. old I expected better. The units lost all forwarding power off and on. In other words it worked sporadically and Linksys had no explanation why it failed. I switched to eero product.

Blazing Fast WiFi, Quick and Easy Setup

I have a fairly high end modem/router combo that I use with my Xfinity Service. I was getting fantastic throughput too - usually above the service level I was paying for (even via WiFi). But when I setup the Velop system, it was like night and day. My internet connection is significantly faster on all of my wireless devices. The setup process was quick and easy too, probably about 15 minutes for the whole system. I am a fairly advanced networking user, however this could be setup by someone with very little technology experience - all you need is a smartphone and be able to plug an ethernet cable from a Velop node into your existing modem. I fully expected to have to turn my very expensive modem/router combo into a bridge, but the setup is configured to ask if it was a modem or a modem/router combo. So far no issues running the two networks from my existing setup and a new one through the Velop. This also allows me to keep the wired connections on the existing modem/router. I also have a lot of network interference in my home and I expected to have to dig into the administration settings to start changing Wifi channels - but I have had zero issues (likely due to the multi-node system and the mesh network). The only drawback with the Velop is the number is the number of ethernet ports (2 per node), however it is advertised as a Wifi system, not a wired system - and this isn't enough to drop the review a star. An inexpensive switch could solve that issue if needed. All in all, I highly recommend the Velop system as a replacement or supplement to an existing WiFi setup.

    Excellent whole home WiFi System

I initially balked at the price of the 3 node Linksys Velop and went for the Google Wi-Fi 3 node system instead. That worked very well in a basic configuration but my home network includes wired printers and a desktop iTunes server. Because Google Wi-Fi doesn't properly support a bridge mode none of these devices were accessible to wireless devices connected to the Wi-Fi. I returned the Google Wi-Fi and splashed out the extra for the Linksys Velop. This was slower to configure and honestly isn't as pretty as the Google units but it works very well. It was easy to switch to bridge mode so everything was visible to everything else. The Google Wi-Fi gave me good coverage throughout my home but the Velop was even better. Sitting next to a node I was getting better than 100Mbps with both systems but where the Google Wi-Fi dropped to 50Mbps on my patio I still got 100Mbps connected to the Velop (units in identical places). Roaming between units appears seamless. I make voice calls using WhatsApp Voice and I can now roam the house and yard and not have to wait while the phone roams to another access point. Brilliant. I'm very pleased.

I have a somewhat large home with a lot of devices on my networ. Previously I already had an AC router with an extender however I found there still to be places in my home that didn't seem bogged down. With the Velop system all those spotty places have gone away. No matter where I am the speed of my network seems consistent now. This is a fantastic product. They are well made, easy to set up and manage and get the job done.

The Best Mesh Solution So Far

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I'm graduating from another mesh solution to the Velop and so far I'm highly impressed. My home is set up with a basement and two above-ground levels. I've tried routers with a bunch of antennas and then another mesh solution. Of the three types, the Velop has been the best by far. I have one station on each floor, enveloping the house (hey, I get the name now!) with strong WiFi. I was sure to put them where I used to have dead spots in coverage in the past. Now that each floor has coverage there are no more dead spots! The units themselves look nice, which is also, in a way, key to good coverage. Since they look unassuming and hide cables so well I was able to put them out in plain sight where they do the most good, instead of hiding them. There are a couple of things I wish I could change. Each has only two Ethernet ports. This means the station that plugs into the WAN only has one port open. My past routers have had at least four ports open, and I've used them for wired connections in the basement. Now I have to use a hub, requiring a more complex setup. Also, the AC adaptors are oddly shaped, so they take up more than one spot on the power strip. Considering the fact I have to add a hub on the base I'm struggling to find outlet space for everything. These are minor issues compared to having dead spots around the house. I'll take better coverage any day!

    Best Mesh System Available

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Mesh wifi systems are all the rage now. And it makes sense. A mesh system promises ease of use, high-speed connections, and broad coverage. The Linksys Velop Whole Home Wi-Fi System delivers on these promises better than any other mesh system on the market as of January 2017. When you first open up the Velop system, you'll notice that even the packaging is impressive. That's not especially relevant to a review of the function of the system, but it's worth pointing out. The packaging was high-end and shows the level of attention Linksys has given the details of presentation. The positive impression continues when you unbox the system. The nodes are attractive and easily blend into most decors. A quick scan after the initial impression begins to reveal some of the few flaws in the system. First, there are no USB ports. That's not a big deal for 99% of users, but for the other 1%, it's a needless deal-breaker. Power systems include a number of USB ports. Second, there are only two ethernet ports per node. This means your "primary" node (the one connected to your router) will have only one ethernet port open. Again, for most users, that is not an issue. For others (here's looking at you, fellow gamers), that could be a significant problem. And the power plug is bizarrely huge. If you're plugging this into a surge protector (and you should be), then the plug may create a problem. I really can't fathom what Linksys was thinking with this plug. Initiating setup reveals the few other flaws. For one, there is no web interface. Setup is available via app from iTunes or the Android Play Store. Sorry, Windows Phone fans (I know there are still a few of you out there). But even with my Android, I'd like to have the option of a web interface. Linksys has a great web interface but chose to not use with the Velop. And, as might be expected with an app-based setup, options are limited. Linksys takes the position that you don't need to disable your SSID broadcast on the theory that hackers can still find your network, even when hidden. True, but it takes just that much more effort to find when you're "cloaked," and mobile hackers tend to go for low-lying fruit. I'd like to have the option to disable my SSID, please. That's mostly it for complaints, and most people won't care at all about those complaints. As for positives, there is a lot to like. When you open the app, it guides you through an easy setup process. I may gripe about the lack of a web interface, but the Linksys app is also excellent in and of itself. I've used another high-end mesh system, and the Linksys Velop was far faster at setup and did everything right the first time. The app walks you through each step. The app also does offer more detail and options than other router band apps I've tested. Each "node" is exactly the same. Technically, the box with three nodes contains three separate routers. Each node covers roughly 2000 square feet with a strong signal. So, if you had any reason to, you could use each one in a separate home with a separate modem. But then you'd miss out on the value of the mesh system. I have a 2600 square foot home. With one Velop, I had coverage throughout that was as good or better than most decent routers. But connection speed dropped to about 60% at the furthermost points of the house. I ended up putting one node upstairs connected to the modem and another downstairs in our primary family room. Connection speed improved to 100%, even in the most remote parts of the house when I added the second node. The third node seemed entirely unnecessary for me at this time, but I'm sure it would be very handy in a larger home or a home with concrete walls, I appreciate the fact the Velop includes MU-MIMO functionality. This basically allows the system to create a special channel for each connected device, so that each device gets the full benefit of your top connection speed. The default security is WPA2. So, even if you don't know anything about how to secure your network, the Velop will take care of that for you. Again, you can't turn off SSID broadcast, but your network would at least be secure. FWIW, the Velop also automatically updates over the air. This should mean it will stay current and adapt to any necessary changes. Linksys obviously is confident in the Velop, given that they include a 3-year warranty (very strong by industry standards), so it seems they wanted to also make it as future-proof as possible via automatic updates. The beauty of the mesh system is that each node communicates with the others on the network to ensure your device gets the optimal connection at all times. This will work beautifully with your newer wireless devices, but I've seen some talk of older devices struggling a little with it. The only device I had that struggled at all was one of my Nest thermostats, which seemed to have a hard time holding onto the best signal. But the other 10,000 wireless devices we have in the home (that's a slight exaggeration) worked perfectly with the Velop. At the end of the day, if you want a simple-to-use system that offers excellent speed and throughput and don't mind spending a bit of money, I can strongly recommend the Velop - especially for large homes that need extended range. If ports and power-user features are more important to you, then I recommend you skip the Velop and stick with something more like the Linksys EA9500 (my primary router of choice). Mesh systems are the new wave, and I really think the Velop is the best in class. If the features of a mesh system are helpful in your household, get a Velop.

This MESH style networking, is the end of wireless extenders as we have known it for a while. Almost Endlessly extensible... Options so you don't have to cut out holes in your walls to have GREAT coverage. This unit delivers on that that, right out of the box. Cover most homes with just a single kit... but the option is there to expand even more. Pro's: Great Speed, Great Coverage, Overall Solid System. Con's: I have three: - The Hardware is a GREAT design, but the adapter is bulky. For most people you are going to need a short "power strip saver", short 6"-1' extension cord, so the adapter can easily then plug into a strip. - Setup... Took about 20 minute to get fully setup... granted you only have to do it once, but it did take a while. - iOS Software (maybe different on Android)... the iOS App to use to configure and setup, needs to be tweeked a bit. Some of the long steps, my phone would go to background (I use touch, so I can't extend the length of time much)... and the app at times didn't like that, so had to start over... adding to the setup time. But then using it after setup, just a bit too many quirks. This is easily addressed in software updates, so should not be much of a long term issue. If you want to have an expanded wireless network at home, and tired of the extenders and multiple routers, this is the way to go.
