    A great, home Wi-Fi system

I received the Linksys Velop system and was very excited about getting this setup in my house. In the box, you receive three nodes all with power supplies, an Ethernet cable (that is thinner), and a sticker. The quick setup instructions tell you to download the Linksys app to get it setup, so you don't necessarily need your PC to set this up. I would recommend that if you are going to setup the entire system with all 3 nodes, at least give yourself about 30-45 minutes to do so. The app walks you through every step and even has pictures for those that aren't tech savvy. The three nodes were setup in our office, basement, and master bedroom. With our house being older, we've had some spotty connections in the past with older Wi-Fi routers. The app was already downloaded and you also have to enable BlueTooth on your phone to get this setup. That's not a complaint or drawback, just more of an FYI. The nodes all have two Ethernet ports, a reset button, and a holder for your cables so the nodes can stand up. One thing I was a bit surprised about was that none of the nodes have a USB port. I hooked up an external hard drive on my older routers and used them as a media server, but this isn't too big of a deal to me. It's not a necessity. The signal strength is consistent and seems to have helped in our home. My original setup included a Wi-Fi extender but this had to be placed in a spot that I didn't want, but provided the best signal strength. With these nodes, I don't have to worry about that. The Linksys app is great for most of the administration. You can see all the devices that are connected, reboot the system, change information on it without going to your computer. If you need a consistent Wi-Fi home system, I really can't recommend this enough. The mesh network is an awesome setup in my older home and gives me the consistency that I needed.

Great coverage for a mesh network

This system was slightly difficult to set up although the basic setup was easy. It was when you run into a snag that there's some tricks you have to follow. But technical support is available 24/7 and very helpful and knowledgeable. Setup is not quick, but it's a great system with about the best rated coverage. Each tower can act as a stand alone unit as well. They are fairly interchangeable. You can move them around your house after the setup until you feel you have the best coverage. Set them up all close together at first and then split them up. The app is outstanding and allows you to check all your devices including the towers. You can do a speed-test of your system from the app, You can access the system while away from home. You can name the units by the location they're in and change that as often as you need to. Overall I highly recommend any of the Velop mesh network systems.

The Linksys Velop mesh system - once I had it set up - seems all it's reputed to be. Fast throughput, large area coverage, easy to administer via the app, and efficient band steering are hallmarks of a good mesh network and with two of these nodes set up so far I was provided the best-looking (the off-white mini-towers look great on my shelves) and powerful wifi network I've ever had. However, getting it set up with the Android app was not stress-free. I don't know if the app is buggy or what, but I had to back up and redo the first node 3 times before it took - including using the power switch twice - and even then the "configuring" step seemed to hang. All in all, it took about 40 minutes to finish the first node. And, the power plug is wider than all of my other gadgets' plugs so I needed to adjust everything in that respect. These are the only things that aren't "practically perfect in every way" about the Velop. Other than great wifi coverage, this system offers basic functionality - 2 ethernet ports per node, no usb ports, and only a few advanced settings. It does offer a guest network, device prioritization, MU-MIMO, and parental controls. I'm not sure this is a good value for the price but it is not overhyped - as I mentioned, I think this is a powerful and efficient mesh network that covers a large area, perhaps larger than some other mesh systems. One last thing to note: Linksys does consumer level network appliances in a big way and I've had good experiences with its tech assistance in the past. I hope that fixes to firmware and the app happen quickly.

      Hi, Jules,

Your feedback is well appreciated and we're glad to hear that you consider the Velop system a powerful and efficient mesh network. What you have encountered during the setup process might be due to an outdated Linksys App. In case you already tried the latest app version, we would be more than happy if you could provide us further details on the setup issues like if there were any error messages and which part of the setup process did it occur. The information will help us continue to improve the app. Please feel free to contact us at 800-986-0518 or shoot us an email at [email protected] with the details and link to this review for our reference.

The First Mesh Network For Full Speed In My House

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Linksys Velop WiFi system is the first WiFi system to deliver a rock solid 300 Mbps down/20 Mbps up WiFi connection all around my house and into my backyard. I've been through Eero and other multiple single wireless AC router solutions that just simply did not have the range and speed to cover my house. I love the design aesthetics, nice and compact. Single LED on top to indicate the status of the device and network, and a cable management hole to ensure that the cables on the bottom don't tip over the node. It's super easy to setup the network, but as of now, it does take some time. Took me roughly half an hour to have the system find each node and do its updates. However, when it was finished, I was surprised to get full speeds all around my house! Having MU-MIMO also helps speed and latency on some of my devices. I will also note the max 5 GHz network speed is 867 Mbps, 2.4GHz max network speed is 400 Mbps. Their advertisement of AC6600 is the maximum total aggregate bandwidth of the entire system. Also, guest networking is no longer using an unsecured network + password in the web browser! It's a separate network that can be setup with a WPA2 password! That was my one annoyance with other Linksys routers and I am tremendously pleased that they changed this! Some limitations exist however. You will not be able to split the bands to two separate SSIDs (2.4 GHz, and 5 GHz) albeit the fact that Linksys band steering tech is actually quite good. All settings are controlled through the app with no web interface for any further fine control. I would like to also see which node each device was connected to as well. Two LAN ports per unit, would've liked more. Hopefully future software and firmware updates will alleviate some of those concerns. But this is the first mesh network to finally deliver on full speeds all over my house! I am very pleased with this purchase and for those of you out there deciding between this and other mesh solutions, STOP LOOKING! This is the solution you want for a full speed home WiFi network solution.

Linksys Velop Whole Home Wi-Fi System is stronger than any Wi-Fi extender that I have ever used. My apartment building was constructed in the 1970’s with thick concrete walls that are different from the present day sheet rock walls used in most new apartment buildings. I have always had a problem in trying to pick up my Wi-Fi signal in my living room, which is the furthest room from my bedroom where I have my modem and router installed. My Wi-Fi signal always goes to the two rooms adjacent to my bedroom, which is my kitchen and my bathroom, but I soon as I walk past my kitchen and into my living room the Wi-Fi signal will diminish from five bars to one or no bars and the video freezes. The installation process is simple and is done through the Linksys Wi-Fi app exclusively. Each node is configured individually and the app records the received data. During the setup process, I had to readjust the location of the second and third node in order to connect to the network. The app gives all the details of the possible problems of why the first attempt failed to connect to the network. Watching for different color lights (blue, purple and red) tells you the status of your connection. The Linksys Velop Whole Home Wi-Fi System can be used when you have a separate modem and router setup or when you have a combination modem router setup. Most combination modem routers produce problems with setting up, but the Linksys Velop Whole Home Wi-Fi System setup was easy breezy and signal strength holds up in all rooms.

I was very impressed with the packaging. Very professional looking and the nodes are pleasing to the eye. Be sure you have a smartphone for setup because you have to load the free software on your phone. The software was easy to find and load. From there you begin the setup of the nodes. I had some issues getting the setup done. For some reason, my software hung up on the setup of the first one. I called support and they were very helpful and willing to walk me through the complete setup. Please understand that the setup is very easy. I think my units needed a update to the software. After that was done, the setup was done without a hitch. It does take a little time though so be patient. Now for how it works. I have FIOS in my home and use one of the more current Modem/Routers from Verizon. I haven't had any problems connecting in my home before, but the signal is noticeably slower in my office because of the distance from the router. After the setup of the Velops, all I can say is "WOW!" I did a speedtest using both connections and with the Velops my download speed is 2.5 times faster and upload is 4 times faster than my Verizon router. I ran the test twice just to be sure. In fact, there is very little degradation from the wired speed. I am very impressed. So from my opinion the time spent setting this system up was well worth it. My 4 Stars is because of the trouble I had getting it up and running. I would rather give it 4.5 Stars. 5 Stars for performance and 4 for setup/installation.

Setup is an exercise in patients. I had to go through the process three times before I had success. I have a Wi-Fi router already setup in my home. Twice the setup icon would spin endlessly after I selected the node location. I had to force close the app. Also, I was trying to add these nodes to my existing Linksys account. Finally, I decided to try “forget this network” for my current router, setup a new account and ran through the setup. No issues that time. Clearly they designed the setup thinking you were going to be installing this in a Wi-Fi-free home. Very annoying considering how long I patiently tried to wait for the app to finish setup. After things got going smoothly the 3rd attempt, running through all three nodes was easy. I have good coverage across my home. The nodes look like too and I like that they have two Ethernet ports each. I haven’t used them yet but I assume this means I can plug in an Ethernet device. I’ll probably try my printer first. It may sound silly given the intent of this product, but it would be nice if I could use my existing router and add the nodes to it to extend coverage. Yes, it’s a pricey way to go, but since I’m not that savvy with how to tie multiple routers together, it would be one of those tradeoff decisions. I wish there was a web interface at least for maintenance and further refinement, even if still required to setup via the app. Overall I’m happy with the nodes, which keeps me from rating it 3-stars for the inflexible setup.

Purchased today and decided to write a review of the set up of the nodes. The first two nodes was easy to set up and link. However, the third one had a lot of issues. Would start to connect then would drop. Tried it several times to no avail. I decided to call Support. Reading other posts was dreading this prospect. I called the number and received the famous “we are experiencing abnormally amount of calls please hold”. First thought of course, great a two hour wait. Not so within 5 minutes got a representative. Wow what great service she was able to “walk” through resolving the issue for node that kept failing. Within 10 minutes problem solved. I don’t know if I just lucked out or not. Ended up the firmware needed updating. You have to use their app to set up the nodes. Works relatively well, which was another surprise. I got confused because when having my problem, I didn’t know that you can override and go to the actual dashboard. One important thing I learned is after you set up your first node and you are ready to link your other ones, place the node within 4 to 5 inches from node can next to the one connected to your modem. It is much faster. It is very helpful if you have the same issues. I did this node linked quickly. Once all is linked, you can place the others anywhere you want. A word of advice, don’t in a hurry, it does take a minute or two for it to link back up. Wait for the solid blue led you will be all set. I am very impress that, now throughout my hair me, the condo nnections afe strong and the speeds are high and very stable.

I have used the Google WiFi 3 node kit which Linksys seems to be duplicating here... And Linksys does a great job of mirroring the experience Google created which I greatly admire! The Linksys offers a great app experience which walks you through the system setup. I did run into one glitch during setup but this was easily fixed by pressing the reset button at the bottom of the second node I setup. The reset button is actually something the Google nodes do not have so its a welcome addition. The other difference is the physical style of each node, Linksys went with a narrow tower design which places the LED indicator light at the top of the tower facing upward. Between the Linksys and Google systems I think you can't go wrong either way. Both systems have great WiFi performance, both are simple to setup, and both are small is size and designed to be hidden in plain sight. If you prefer having a physical reset switch and a rectangular tower design then the Linksys in an easy choice. However with all that goodness there is one limitation I hope is changed latter through software or firmware update: You cannot control the LAN IP settings. This is not a big deal since most people will not care or notice this missing feature, but if you have older WiFi devices or a special need to manually configure your LAN and DHCP IP settings then you won't want to get this or the Google system...yet. Hopefully they'll add this feature in the future assuming it only requires a software update.
