Now this is how you do Wifi. Having one router often just doesn't do the trick unless you're right next to it. And then what's the point of having a wireless connection? By having three separate access points that you can set up throughout the house, your Wifi capability and reliability go up drastically. No more complaints about a bad signal in certain rooms. I felt like the Linksys Velop vastly improved my home's Wifi. Set-up was simple and straight forward. I was a little surprised by the complaints about having to have a smartphone running Android or iOS to set-up. Who doesn't have that these days (especially if you're setting up this kind of system)? My one "complaint", I wish they were black. I feel like they'd blend in a bit better in my house. That said, if color is the only problem, I can definitely live with that!

The app allowed me to set up without confusion and it updated itself in no time. What I enjoy most about the app is the control factor. Although I cannot appoint others to be co-managers of the network, I love the idea of restricting certain websites from the kids for example, instead of blocking the access to the internet altogether. Also, there is an option to prioritize up to 3 devices without a time restriction. This WiFi system is much stronger that I expected. It extended the strength of my router to beyond the walls of my house. I was able to get stable WiFi at the end of my driveway. Since this is a triband router, I sense the extra bandwidth makes for less traffic for connected devices, giving them the opportunity to experience a full connection. (One 2.4 GHz bandwidth for low maintenance use like web surfing and printer sharing and two 5 GHz bandwidths for high maintenance use like streaming and gaming). I plan on using this device in the foreseeable future as it meets all the expectations of an upcoming solution to WiFi dead spots.

Velop Provides Primary Router and Access Points

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Setting up the Velop system is not easy if one has a legacy system and wanted to use the existing router. What I have learned. The Velop has to be the primary router, so legacy router connections can best be continued with a switch. When connecting the nodes sequentially, the device with the setup app has to be next to the unit. You can't start the node setup and go back to the base. Apparently the system uses the nodes and app device at the node location to setup the network. Once the nodes were all working, they can be moved by switching off a node and moving it. Following moving the node, best to run Channel finder to optimize. The system is working and it delivers the full ISP bandwidth (100mbs down, 10mbs up) throughout my three story wood frame house. I originally had one node on each floor. The node Ethernet ports make the Velop Towers convenient but expensive access points. Now that it is working I improved the wifi and wired networking in my house and added two more nodes for a total of 5

The Velop... Overall, it has left me with a "Meh" feeling. If you're the kind of person that likes to set it and forget it, then this is the product for you. If you also dream of going wireless, reliable wireless at that, then this is definitely the product for you. But for everyone else, the Velop falls just short of satisfactory. To begin, I'd like to list off all the positives. What is its strong point? Well, it's simple. Very simple. And that's great for all those who wish to never touch a router or networking stuff again. Their provided application allows users to do all the typical things, such as guest access, parental controls, and more without having to go through the traditional maze of a browser router page. You are also able to monitor activity within the app, as well as get notifications of any downtime that occurs. In addition to the app, the router itself provides excellent signal. One node was surprisingly powerful enough for me to get full speeds wirelessly throughout my entire house (tested with about 4-5 walls between the router and my phone). The router also looks quite modern, and has a small footprint in terms of space. These are all great things, so lets move on to the negatives. Well, lets start from the beginning - the setup phase. This was FUSTRATING, to say the least. I had to reset the modem and Velop at least twice, thinking the process was bugged out because it took so long. The first time through, I believeI waited at least half an hour for it to "connect to the internet" before I decided to retry. I have set up many routers before, and this is the first where the process did not just stop and tell you to retry. I probably could have let the App drain my phone's battery before it told me to try again. During the setup process, it asks for two things: network name and password. Ok, that's great. Very simple and I like that. But when I get into the app, I find out that it did not even use the network name and password I provided. The next thing I tried was device prioritization. Well, you can forget about that because inorder for it to work, they had to run their built in speed test which kept failing. You can also ignore parental controls, since it did not seem to work. I added youtube.com as a blocked site only to find out that I could still go to youtube. So, in conclusion, I fully endorse the router. It is a very decent router, but the app is basically digging the graves for both of them. This wouldn't be a huge deal if there was an alternative, But there's not, you HAVE to use the app to configure anything for your network. A word to Linksys: please, fix your app. It is hindering what could been a great product that strongly competes against the other mesh network devices available. At its current state, I cannot recommend because of lacking features. But these are all things that can be fixed in their next patch.

Mostly OK, but I will never again buy Linksys

I bought this mesh router because of Linksys's reputation, and I have had it for over a year. I spent a LOT of money on it. I was happy in general. Setup was easy, if slow. and coverage was mostly good. But there are some problems. Several times - 3 or 4 - I have lost a connection to a remote node and had to reinstall it. The system recently got so screwed up that I had to go back to factory settings to completely reinstall it. Here's what led me to write this review. Although I had 200 Mbps service I never got more than 120 Mbps throughput vis an ethernet connection. I just chose to live with the problem My ISP recently upgraded me to 400 Mbps, and I don't get more than 150 Mbps throughput. (The router's built-in speed test shows 400+ Mbps to the ISP.) I figured it was time to contact Linksys for help. This was a complete and utter waste of time. Their chat function (which they recommend) is not functional. Over several days I got the same message to try again in the future. When I tried calling the message said they had "an unusually high call volume" and there might be a long wait. The support website says that there is a callback option, but I was not offered it. After 1/2 hour I gave up. I don't care how good a product they make. If they can't offer me ANY support this is a brand that I will never buy again.

I was accustomed to lag-time and range limitations using my home WiFi, and decided VELOP would help. It definitely improved both. The downside was the realization my incoming signal strength is low! I must accommodate a service call from them to correct that X*/cable problem I wasn't previously aware of. With VELOP I now have excellent reception out in my garage, previously spotty at best. I expect to no longer wait or ask someone else to disconnect -- or limit my own device(s) -- from WiFi so I can get some work done! Setup using the Linksys app on my iPhone 7+ was a snap... once I realized I must unplug my other Linksys router to allow the new device to be configured. Their appearance is more sleek (almost attractive) than other routers, prompting open-air placement rather than trying to find a useful hidden spot. I am anxiously awaiting my incoming/provider signal to be fixed AND warmer weather allowing me to spend more time in the garage/outside to take full advantage of my upgraded WiFi!

Upon unboxing, the first impression of the Linksys Velop system is more of speakers instead of routers. The many small holes in the case only reinforce that impression. The units are tall and elegant, encouraging users to leave them out in the open where they will perform best. Depending on the size of the building that the system is intended for, units are available as a single router or packs of two or three. Each seven inch tall unit has two Ethernet ports on the bottom and a power button. Noticeably absent is a USB port, a potential showstopper for households that share non-network ready devices like printers or hard drives across their network. Setup is easy and is done entirely from within Linksys’ free app. Linksys has gone out of their way to ensure that someone with no network experience can set up their home network without feeling overwhelmed. Once the modem is connected to one unit, the app directs you to place an additional unit and helps in placement by telling the user the signal strength relative to the first unit, ensuring that the unit is not placed too far too close to the original unit. The LED light on the top of each unit shines different colors for different issues: blue when connected, red if the internet connection fails, yellow when it is out of range of the original unit, and purple during setup. While the app is a great tool for network setup, there were frequent tiresome pauses while information was exchanged between the app and the system. The app’s dependence on Bluetooth to detect unused units nearby also slows the process down. The app’s dashboard page shows what devices are connected, and has easy to see buttons to control the Guest network, Parental Controls, and Device Prioritization. In the Parental Controls menu, parents will appreciate the ability to select a device to control and block access to specific sites, or completely block access to the Internet. Blocked devices are listed on the Dashboard page. The Device Prioritization menu lets you select up to three devices like streaming boxes or gaming consoles for priority Internet access, and these devices also appear on the Dashboard page. One disappointing feature of the Guest network is that users connected to the Guest network are blocked from connecting to devices connected to the network, such a printers or NAS drives. Once the system is set up, signal strength is outstanding, with a 2,900 square foot home having no spots where signal strength fell off. The Velop supports Multi-User Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) data streaming, which transmits data to devices at the same time instead of sequentially, a feature that will be appreciated in a household where multiple people are streaming video at the same time. One big disappointment will only be an issue with power users. Linksys has gone a step further in making this system easy to setup and maintain. They have not hidden many common advanced settings that knowledgeable users would want to adjust. They have not included the options at all. This means that users will not be able to do things like change the range of assigned IP addresses, use a custom DNS or even use the separate 2.4 and 5 Mhz ranges as separate networks. A popular practice of using MAC address restrictions to further ensure there are no Wi-Fi snoopers would be impossible with this system. Linksys says the Velop will work with Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant to perform tasks such as turning on the Guest network and helping remember passwords, but Amazon has not turned on that skill yet so it was unable to be tested. Is a mesh system right for you? Range extenders are good for boosting signal, but at the expense of bandwidth, which is cut in half because the extenders use the same wireless channel to communicate with both the main router and devices. Mesh routers use a dedicated channel for communication back to the router, thus avoiding the bandwidth problem. Is this the system you need in your home? That all depends on how to you access the internet and how your family consumes media within your home. If your family uses the network solely to surf the internet and stream media, then they will be extremely happy with this system’s performance no matter where they find themselves in the home. However, if your family has printers that they want to share or a hard drive with movies or pictures that needs to be shared, this system Is not the correct system for you, unless you already have network ready devices such a printer with Ethernet ports and NAS drives.
