Great Wi-Fi system for a beginner

A novice could easily get this Wi-Fi system up and running in very little time. It is extremely fast and has great coverage. The problem with this system is that there is absolutely no way to access the advanced features that come with every other router I have worked with. With my network, I need the ability to change the IP range and turn off DHCP service. This is impossible (right now) to control. The customer service rep informed me that she would forward my call information to the proper people so that they may include these features in future firmware/app updates, but honestly, I do not understand why they would have left any of these features out.

Great for basic users, not for networking experts

Good -Connectivity speeds -Great coverage ( more than most need ) -Relatively easy to set up ( had more problems using Android app than iOS due to system permissions ) -Looks nice Bad -EXPENSIVE -Lack of connectivity ( no USB, only 2 network ports per module ) -Lack of expert features found on cheaper routers -Requires iOS or Android device for installation and maintenance -Requires external Linksys account -Huge wall wart -Small cable routing holes and recesses Overview The Velop is aimed at networking novices who want a plug-n-play system to cover their whole house without requiring advanced networking know-how to pull it off. In that function alone, the Velop system is quite good. Setup is pretty easy using the Android or iOS app. While it's annoying that you have to use a mobile device rather than a direct web connection to the nodes, the point of a mesh wireless system like this is to provide coverage over a larger space for multiple devices. So it's extremely unlikely the target market won't have at least one device available to install a Velop system. That said, it's ridiculous there no Windows or Mac application that allows someone to do this with a laptop instead of a phone or tablet Actual network performance is great. The dedicated back-talk channel means you don't lose half your theoretical bandwidth for every jump from one repeater to the system manages a single SSID that automatically transfers your devices from one node to the other. Moving from one zone to another is practically unnoticeable. However, for anyone wanting more advanced features, the Velop is lacking. First, no USB ports at all. That means no network attached USB storage and no USB printer sharing. Second, each node only has two network jacks. One jack on the base node is already used for your modem, leaving only one for another device ( a desktop computer for most people ). But are two jacks enough if you want to place a node at your entertainment center ( gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, and cable boxes )? Yes, you can get around this by moving some devices to the wireless bands. Again, for basic home use the Velop is fine. But for power users that might have multiple desktops, perhaps a home server, multiple gaming consoles, and a network printer, it's not enough. The management software is also hit and miss. All management is handled by the mobile app ( again, no desktop or laptop support ). Depending on firmware version, you can find workarounds to get to the nodes via web pages for configuration, but Linksys doesn't support this method at all and recommends against it ( and you still need a mobile device for initial setup ). While you get most basic features, like parental controls and traffic prioritization for some devices, many advanced routing features will be limited, or completely missing. You can't separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into separate SSIDs, and the system itself determines which device goes on which band. The mobile app also requires you to create a Linksys user account, which allows you to monitor you home network from anywhere ( Velop stays in constant contact with Linksys by default for error checking and reporting ). However this also introduces an additional vulnerability, potentially allowing someone to compromise your home network by cracking your Linksys account or login ( compared to other routers that allow you to fully disable any outside access ). The power adapters are quite large ( 2.5" x 2.5" x 1.25" ), even for power-strips that have extra spacing specifically for power adapters. the underside of the units is recessed about 2" for cables to pug in. While this gives a clean look with no jacks on the exterior, it also makes it difficult to unplug the cables or reach the power and reset button when both network jacks are used. Final Word In some ways, Velop ( and most mesh networking products ) are solutions in search of a problem. While repeaters and range extenders do technically diminish wireless throughput, the resulting bandwidth is still higher than most people's ISP service, meaning you don't experience actual slow-down. The only place most people would notice the bottlenecking are those transferring massive data within their own network ( typically a separate work station accessing or editing data on a high-performance home file server ) or those that have very high ISP requirements. And most people in these catagories would rather configure their own mesh network rather than buying something like a Velop or Orbi. For the $500 Linksys wants for the 3-node Velop pack, I could get just as much coverage and performance using other routers and some premium antennas, and I'd likely have better network control and other connectivity features. Smart usage of routers in bridge mode can put most devices like gaming consoles and TiVos on wired connections, meaning the only home devices left on wireless are laptops, tablets, and phones. However, I'm not Linksys' target audience for this. I repeat myself, but the Velop is a great system for those who just want great wireless coverage with the least amount of effort. I would recommend it to family and friends that aren't tech savvy and complain about poor reception in their homes. However, the 3-node pack is overkill, even detrimental to performance for most users. The nodes need a minimum distance between each of them to work best without interfering with each other. Linksys is not overestimating the coverage on these. A single node can cover most homes under 1500 sq-ft and most two story homes will be serviced well by two nodes. Unless you have a very large home, tricky HVAC vents that block wireless signals, or need your network in a detached garage or guest house, save some money and get the 2-node package instead.

Worth the invest for connection quality and speed

I was very excited to see my Linksys Velop in the mail and even more once it was installed. The signals are strong and the speed of file transfers between my computers is ultra-fast. If you have a big home or live in a place with a lot of signal interference, you need a meshed Wi-Fi system like this. With Alexa integration you can give the router commands such as change password, setup guest password, turn off the router. In addition, having multiple Smart TVs and Roku in the house, I don’t experience any speed degradation because of the new technology compared to my old routers. My connection to my work VPN seems a lot faster as well and so far, I haven’t experience any dropped connections. For the longest time, I was questioning the connection quality from my work rather than from my home because I always have the latest and greatest techs here. Definitely worth the investment.

I have FIOS coming into my house, set at one of the highest speed I also set-up a roaming network with 2 base stations and several extenders. We get 5 bars anywhere inside my house, and often well outside My network was handled by another fast brand, and we could stream movies (NetFlixs) onto multiple devices usually without delay. There were times when buffering would take place, especially onto the mobile devices (phones & tablets) Reading the tech specs on this, I decided to step up and simplify. The set-up was just as easy as they say, and whew, did we notice a difference The same 5 bars are there, but speeds on all devices increased immeasurably. No more buffering on mobile devices, and downloads are almost instantaneous. Everything that they are saying about this is true Could not be happier with what my network has become

I have been using the Linksys Velop system for almost a year. Considering the time of purchase, I had a few complications with the initial setup due to the Linksys smartphone application. Since then, Linksys has provided several updates to the application and resolved many of the issues I was having. This system is by far the best routing system I have used to date. I am currently running three units off of another Linksys router using "Bridge Mode". Since upgrading, my entire house is capable of delivering the FULL bandwidth of my chosen internet service provider's plan (30mbps). I have absolutely no dead spots or fluctuations in speed. Mesh routing is definitely the way to go and I highly recommend mesh systems to anyone who has a larger home or who wants full utilization of the speed in which they pay for.

      Hi, alex,

If the slow internet speed is only happening to the wireless network of your Linksys WHW0303B, then you may try running its channel finder feature. You may also try power cycling your whole Velop system and observe how it goes. Send us an email then at [email protected] so we can have this checked with our Escalation Engineers. I purchased the tri-band Velop system. Set up was extraordinarily easy, which is s huge compliment considering I used to have trouble programming my VCR. My home is 4,400 sqft and the coverage is amazing. I have two of the routers downstairs and one upstairs. I currently have 14 devices on the network (laptops/phones/iPads/Apple TV, printers, window covering, thermostats, etc). Prior to Velop, I could not get more than 100 Mbps on any device even though I have 1 gig coming into the house. Now I am hitting 700 Mbps. Extremely satisfied.

I have this installed in my parents house because the WiFi that is built in to their modem/router is, well, garbage. They live in a 1600 sq. ft. ranch with a fairly open layout. However, even with the router centralized in the house, the WiFi speeds degraded immensely at the corners of the house, and using it on the patio or at the fire pit in the back yard was clearly too much to ask for. By placing these nodes throughout the house, the speeds have increased...a lot! We are now able to use all of our devices throughout the house, in the backyard, and in the basement, which works well for when my toddler wants to FaceTime his nana and she is in the basement "crafting". I like that the nodes are slim, modern-looking, and effectively blend away on a side table. Linksys has once again, crafted another superb product.

I replaced an older AC1900 router that had many dead spots throughout our apartment. Although it did take more than the five minutes to set up that the box claims, after the Velop system was set up it worked phenomenally! Most of the dead spots in our apartment are gone and the speeds have increased throughout the network itself! I would definitely recommend this for larger homes (not necessarily a 1000 SqFt apartment like mine) as the separate nodes will allow you to dedicate a portion of the network to a certain dead spot area and even hard wire certain devices that are further away from where your router/modem originally were! I do wish this system could be set up and configured from a computer versus just the mobile app from a smartphone but setup was still very easy and straight forward!

    Simple Setup and Great Performance

Linksys Velop contains three nodes, three power supplies, a Ethernet cable, a sticker and a very simple startup guide. Nodes are white, square about 7x3x3 with a single LED indicator light on top.Two sides are solid, top is vented along with the two other sides. Two Ethernet ports, a power port, a reset button and power switch on the bottom. Cable management is a small cutout on the bottom corner that allows everything to sit flat. No USB ports on any of the nodes. Tri band WiFi, AC2200, MuMiMo with a dedicated backhaul channel that most mesh systems lack. Setup is done through the Linksys Smart WiFi app, either iOS or Android. Just download the app, setup a Linksys account if you don't have one and the app guides you through the initial setup on the main node attached to your modem. Takes about ten minutes or so to setup the main node, pick a SSID and a password and another ten minutes or so to add the additional two nodes to the system. The app will tell you if you need to move the mesh nodes closer or not but it wasn't an issue and everything setup perfectly. You can add a Guest Network easily later. Any changes are done through the app and you can monitor your system remotely from anywhere. I've had a chance to use a few WiFi mesh systems and so far the Velop has outperformed all of them and some by a significant margin with way faster speed and range than anything I've used in the past. I can include a system that looks like a couple of air fresheners and a 3 unit system that looks like hockey pucks from a large tech company that begins with a G. I usually have 15-20 devices hooked up at a time including TV's, Roku boxes, tablets, wireless security cameras, phones, you name it and the Velop has handled everything without a buffer or hitch. Easily covers 3000 sq. ft. 2 story house with no dead spots and strong signal all over. Also Velop does a great job of seamless handoff, you can walk all over your house on a phone call or streaming something and the stream or call is solid everywhere, no buffering or stutters. A couple of things to note. Since each node has only two Ethernet ports if you have a number of wired devices you use you can buy a plug n play gigabit Ethernet switch to fix that. The Linksys app doesn't provide a bunch of router settings to change things around the way you want, so if you're a power user who likes to fiddle with your network you'll be disappointed on what it provides. Also the Velop only sends a single SSID, no single networks. The Linksys app is a bit buggy and lacks features but I'm pretty sure they'll fix that shortly with a few updates. While the Linksys Velop is priced a bit higher than some other mesh systems available it's much faster performance and range compared to the others justifies spending a few dollars more. Latest WiFi tech installed makes this a state of the art mesh system that performs like you expect it to. If you're looking for a dead simple to setup and maintain mesh system with unparalleled speed and range then the Linksys Velop system should top your list.
