Very Easy Set Up, Works Like A Charm
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was excited to receive this product and give it a test drive. Set up was relatively easy, however it has to be done through a smart phone. (This may be a draw back for a few, but most that would purchase this product have a smart phone. Now there are 2 Linksys apps in the Apple app store. The one you need is the newer one which has a symbol identical to the one on the card in the box.) One the app was downloaded and a new account created, the app walked me through the set up process. It took about 35 minutes to set up all 3 nodes. The app is great so far. I have already had to use it to change the password because I typed in wrong the first time when setting up so I could not connect to the network. Wireless speeds are comparable to what I was receiving with the previous equipment that I was using. The app functionality allows you to control what devices connect to the network and supports guest network functionality.

Excellent WIFI & Easy Setup
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Linksys VELOP appears to be a new entrant into the mesh wifi products. I did much research on the VELOP as well as other brands. I visited the Best Buy store in Crystal Lake, IL and the sales associate was able to explain the system in detail to me because he had just purchased the VELOP for himself. Based on the detailed information as well as the Linksys brand and a very competitive price. I purchased the VELOP duel system. The install was easy and flawless. One unit was placed in the basement and another on the main floor of my home. Wifi delivery on the main floor was substantially improved and with the mesh system I can move to any location within my home and the unit with the best signal automatically provides me with the best signal. I love it.

It really DOES do what they say!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a pretty tech-savvy individual, having built my first computer from a Heathkit back in 1980. I'm comfortable with a lot of messing around with hardware and software, but I'm getting tired of doing it just to get what I need. It can be fun, but I have better things to do now. I have managed my own wifi system for several years, but have almost always had recurring issues with the fact that my traditional routers had trouble pushing a reasonably strong, stable, signal to the far reaches of our large (5000+ sq ft.) house, on 2 floors plus a basement, and very substantial construction, with plaster walls containing a lot of minerals. A really good building to shield OUT radio signals, I'm afraid. This was a continuing battle, with me trying 3 different highly reviewed routers over the past few years, none of which were acceptable by themselves. I had added several repeater/extenders in different parts of the house, trying to push the signal out to where we needed it, with some success, but each lowered the speed, and I still had NO stability over time. I was always having to reboot a router, or unplug/replug/reprogram a repeater, every time there was a small power glitch, or just for no reason at all. My wife complained all the time about how often she couldn't get online without me being there to reboot/reconfigure/re-whatever some piece of "tech stuff". I'd tried every inexpensive method, and even some more expensive ones, to get things to settle in for us, mostly to no avail. I was finally fed up, and decided to try one more thing. Basically, I decided to throw money at the problem. I'd been avoiding the "WiFi Mesh Network" possibility, due to the high cost, and the fact that I already had so much invested in other hardware, which would then be useless. But I knew it just MIGHT solve my problem if I could get past that. We had a huge (32 people) multi-day family reunion at our house last weekend, with everyone having at least one phone/tablet/computer, and some of them several. Last year when we did this, I was constantly messing around trying to ensure everyone could do at least part of what they wanted, and this year, I decided to see if I could get it fixed once and for all. I purchased the Linksys VELOP system, with 3 nodes. It was expensive, yes, but I bought it from my local Best Buy, knowing that I could return it if it didn't do what they said. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to install it until people were already arriving, but I decided, "What the heck, they say it's easy. Let's find out", and told everyone "WiFi will be off for a while, I'll let you know when it's back on.", fully expecting it to be hours before I gave up and put the old system back up. I carefully unhooked the old router, unplugged all the paraphernalia that went with it, and started setting the VELOP system up per the well-written instructions in the Android App. In literally about 45 minutes from unhooking the old, unboxing the new and installing it, I kid you not, I had smooth, full-speed WiFi covering the whole of my house, with everyone back online and working. I fully expected to be packing the thing up and taking it back (I mean, I'm not going to eat a $500 system that doesn't work!) But it DOES! It's been up for a week now, with NO outages, NO reboots, NO fiddling, and NO problems connecting to WiFi in any of the areas of our big house! I keep checking the app to see if there are any errors reported, though I'll supposedly receive notifications if any occur, but it just keeps on humming along. At one point, I had 37 "guest" devices logged onto the system at once, but things just kept humming along. As I said, I was VERY skeptical that this would work like they say it will, and was fully prepared to be hugely disappointed, but I have to say, I'd recommend this for anyone who has similar issues to what I had, if they can afford to pony up for the best. No pulling of new wires, no moving of furniture, nothing but literally "plug-and-play", with the setup handled smoothly by the app on the phone. If you're having similar issues, give it a try. This system really is incredible. I hate how people say everything (yes, everything!) is "Awesome", but this is as close to using that term as I can get. GET IT NOW!

Easy set up, works out of the box!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is far better than what I had before. Easy set up. I didn't give it a 5th star because when I was setting up the extra 2 nubs, I couldn't verify the speed and it kept recommending me to move the nub to a different place...after a while I gave up because I got tired of moving them. I wasn't able to verify the connection and speed. But don't get me wrong, I receive a signal in every corner of the house and so far, it has been 3 days and my download speed is 352bpm and upload 24bpm!!! Super fast compared to my previous" time warner cable" wifi/router! P.S. if you return the wifi/router to your internet provider, they should remove the "$10/month equipment rental fee".

Definite upgrade
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased the velop three pack a couple days ago to replace our aging ASUS DarkNight Router and an extender. Took about an hour total to setup and configure all three nodes, after one reboot, setup overall was fairly straightforward, just followed the prompts on the linksys app. Results were immediate. We have a 100mb cable connection and we are now seeing 50-60mb avg download speeds, EVERYWHERE in the house! This is a huge improvement over our previous wifi setup. Streaming to our Samsung tv is smooth and no buffering. Hope they continue to give us the same performance for the foreseeable future. I would rate it 5 Stars if there were more user/advanced options.

Good signal, poor setup, buggy software.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'll start off by saying that I've owned far more routers than the average person. I've owned cheap routers and expensive routers. Generally, in my house, I run 1 primary router and 2 other routers as wireless access points (think range extender, except wired directly to my primary router for better speeds). So I came into this with a lot of experience dealing with routers. The Velop's setup is easy, yet unfortunately time-consuming. Setting up 3 nodes takes what seems like forever compared to the traditional "router & access point" methodology that I've been using with some routers that are over 3 years old now. I would say it took me over an hour to setup—simply because the app has you do a lot of waiting. I should first mention that the only way to set up the Velop is through the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi app on iOS or Android. Those are your only options, as there is no web-based client. This choice indicates to me that this system is meant for the average user with a smartphone—not for someone who does a lot of tinkering to their network. So first, you set up the main node router to your modem. What I found unintuitive was that *either* of the two gigabit ethernet ports on the bottom of the unit could act as the WAN port—then the other port would act as a LAN port for a device that you'd like to add to your home network. For someone like myself who knows how traditional routers work, this was quite confusing. Once you do a bunch of waiting while the router connects to your modem, you can set up additional nodes one by one. During each phase of setting up a node, you do a bunch of waiting. In the case of the main node, you wait while it connects to your modem and does speed tests. In the case of setting up an additional node, you wait for it to connect to a nearby node in your mesh network and run speed tests to check for optimal performance. In my case, I chose to set up the additional two nodes wirelessly. This resulted in worse performance compared to my usual wired setup (which I expected). Whereas I'd normally only lose at most 10% of my throughput, I was starting to lose 40% of my throughput.. When I wired up the additional nodes, I experience minor improvements, but I can't be sure that the system is working under a bridge mode, as the app indicates nothing. So while I get less throughput, I do get better a better reception in my home. I will have to experiment more as updates are released. That being said, if you're looking for advanced router features, this router doesn't have many. And the ones that it does have? It is a nightmare to change/modify features in the app. I can't say if this is an issue with the app or the hardware itself, but the device prioritization feature fails to work, the in-app speed test fails, and the list goes on. I constantly receive error messages. Once you've got the Velop set up, you may not want to change settings, later on—otherwise, you may experience these same problems. And if the software wasn't enough, one of the nodes I received has a loose piece inside of the unit that you can hear bounce around. Talk about quality control. At this price, I cannot recommend the Velop, as Linksys provides more affordable solutions with more features that actually work. The Velop feels like a product in early beta testing.

Solved all our internet woes
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We absolutely love this product. We didn't have internet coverage throughout our house and now we have a strong signal everywhere. It doesn't matter how many people are using the internet or how, everyone has sufficient service. Our computers hardly ever worked with the wireless printer and now it is not an issue. This has made for a happy household. It was also the easiest installation ever and I am not very technical. I am glad that I did my research before going to the Chapel Hill Best Buy store because the salesman did not show me this one. When I asked if they had the Velop he showed it to me but I knew more about it than he did. Guess the employee was a Christmas temp.

Outdoor Signal with Linksys Velop AC2200
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Linksys Velop AC2200 tower system solved our Wi-Fi communication problem. Our main modem/router with Wi-Fi capability and our computer are located in the Study, which is in the middle of the house. Tower #1 is plugged into the modem; Tower #2 is 30' to the East of Tower #1 & Tower #3 is 24' to the West of Tower #1. Our family often sits on either the Porch (south side of house) or the Patio (north side of house). We were not receiving a strong, consistent signal from the main modem when watching TV on our cell phones. The Linksys Velop towers solved that problem.

Very good product, Lifetime free vendor support
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It works well. I am getting the maximum speed my Internet service delivers, which is over 200gb. Coverage is very good. BUT, the most important thing I want when I buy a high tech product is the support after the sale. LinkSys support is excellent. Even though my devices are out of warranty, they still provide free unlimited, 24/7 support with people that really know the product. Highly recommended.

Great whole house mesh router
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I finally found a router that provides tremendous bandwidth. Setup was easy except I did make a mistake that cost me some time and a call to Linksys support which was terrific to work with. The technical support engineer knew exactly what my problem was and how to fix it. I was very impressed with his knowledge and troubleshooting skills. When signing up for your Linksys account when setting up the router you will receive an email from Linksys. If you don't see it check your junk mail. One thing you need to be aware of occasionally you need to optimize your channels to get the best bandwidth. I bought the two router package. These cover my 2800 square feet two story home.

Easy as pie!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Now that my ISP connection problems have been fixed, I finally set up my new Velop system...in less than 10 minutes. I live in a very long, skinny apartment, and our wireless router is at one end, so you can't always get a reliable connection at the other end. We tried just a basic plug-in range extender (also from Linksys) but it didn't work for what we wanted, because there wasn't a seamless transition between the main network and the extended network. With this set up, it is a whole house secondary network, so for things like our phones, we just stay connected to the Velop network all the time, and we can seamlessly and automatically move from node to node without losing our connection. Installation is a breeze - you download the Linksys app on your phone and it takes you step by step through the installation process of each node, though to be honest, really all you have to do is plug each node in and push "next" a few times on the app and it does everything for you! Disclaimer: I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review.

Best Router for Coverage and Speed
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used all the high end routers, and this is by far the best I've used. Speed and coverage are exceptional. I put a router in my basement, living room and bedroom. Coverage is excellent everywhere in the house and I have signal throughout all of my average side yard as well. Packaging is the best I've seen and the units are well protected. I was able to pair them easily, but had issues trying to change the default router, and WiFi, passwords. I contacted Customer Support and they were very helpful. It took about an hour on the phone and we had to reset the entire network. I don't believe it was the products fault. I started connecting wired devices before I had all the routers configured, and believe this caused the issue. Support was patient and very friendly. A drawback is there are only two wired ports per router. This is not a big issue if you multiple routers because only the first one has a port used, and all the others have two available. They are expensive, but you get what you pay for. Quality, speed, coverage and support are top notch.

Maybe not quite ready?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The new whole home WiFi system concept is a great idea, but I'm afraid the Velop implementation doesn't quite work for me. I had problems setting it up initially and continue to have glitches while it's working. I've tried two different Internet connections, one at home and one I have at the office, but the Velop had problems in both locations. The issues are probably all things that can be fixed in software, but for the price of this system I would expect it to be much easier to get working and also be more stable right out of the box. I currently use another tri-band whole home WiFi system that has been perfectly solid and took less than 15 minutes to install both the base and an extender. That's the experience I expected with the Velop in the same environment, but for some reason it had lots of trouble. During the initial setup I was always able to connect to the node via the app, but it would never discover my router/modem connection to the Internet. Eventually it took me into the "manual" setup where I entered the SSID and password from the base of the node to get connected to it and finish the setup. However, the Internet connection did not work even though it showed it had the correct IP address. I tried the other two nodes to see if it was just a hardware issue, but they all had similar problems. Eventually, I manually renewed the DHCP address via the app just to see if it would work (it did) and then I suddenly had Internet access from my device via the WiFi. However, even now in the Linksys app dashboard it says the node is "Offline" and the Internet icon has an 'x' on it, yet I'm able to connect to things on the Internet just fine. I can even do a speed test from within the app and it works perfectly. I know these are issues I can probably spend time on the phone with support to resolve, but it's disappointing that this is necessary. Beyond these problems, there are several missing features compared to other WiFi systems that make it a product I wouldn't recommend to my friends. First, it doesn't appear that you can configure a DHCP address reservation on the LAN which is something I've done on all my routers for a particular media server and occasionally things like a Raspberry PI that I need to connect to. Next, the Velop nodes do not have USB ports so they have no capability for adding a flash/external disk drive for network storage. This is a feature I've come to use over the years and definitely miss that capability. Finally, the nodes only have two wired Ethernet ports, so where I've always had at least 3 ports available on my router for a DVR, UPS, etc. now there is only one available. Yes, I could buy a switch for those connections but that's another miss in my book. I'd rather sacrifice the nice monolith form factor and have a few more network ports available. If you've got some areas of your house where the WiFi signal from your single router is weak or non-existent, a whole home WiFi system is a great solution. Unfortunately, I just think there are better solutions available today than this one.

Not for me
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Summary: This is probably the right system for someone, but it wasn't the right system for me. Disappointing routing performance, no apparent support for wired devices, and the security concerns related to forced use of the Linksys App and online service leave me unable to recommend it. Intro: I had high hopes for the Velop. I use a Linksys router on an everyday basis for my home network and it works really well - stable connection, excellent wireless performance, very good coverage for a single access point. Sadly, I found the Velop to be time-consuming to set up, with *lower* performance than my existing wireless access setup. I also have security and maintainability concerns about the forced use of Linksys' online service for router configuration. Setup experience: Unlike other mesh solutions I've used, the Velop does not have a "base station" and "extenders" - rather, it has what appear to be three identical white "pillars" that look like Bluetooth speakers. This was actually a little disorienting, because I spent some time trying to figure out which one was the "base station" when I first opened the box. The Velop does not have a web page that you connect to for configuration, rather, you download an app from the Google or Apple app Store (depending on your mobile phone platform) and configure with that. The Linksys app walks you through the steps for installing and configuring the three Velop units. (The Linksys app needs to have some usability testing done on it - on the iPad Mini I used for setup, the text for many of the prompts appeared to be tiny single-pixel wide grey letters on a dark blue background - EXTREMELY difficult to read, and unnecessary - for much of the installation process, this tiny text appeared on a nearly empty screen.) Aside from a curious requirement that I activate Bluetooth on the device I was using (do the Velop units have Bluetooth in them? If so, why? If not, why do I need to turn on the Bluetooth on my iPad to configure them?) the setup process was fairly straightforward. Configuration experience: Once the Velop stations are set up, you set an SSID, which is applied to all three stations on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. There are very few configuration options otherwise. All configuration must be done through the Linksys app. It appears that it is possible to connect the app directly to the Velop rather than going through the Linksys online service, but you *must* create a Linksys online account and use it for initial setup. Performance: Frankly, disappointing. I use a high-end Linksys WRT-series router for WiFi normally; the Velop provided no improvement in coverage in my house and resulted in a *degradation of performance*. Yes, you read that correctly. My WiFi throughput results were *lower* with the Velop than a single WiFi router. This does not mean the Velop is a failure necessarily, but it means that you need to have a fairly large area you're trying to cover to justify the purchase of the Velop over a high-end, well-placed single router. Worse, while my normal WRT-series router can handle *four* simultaneous Netflix streams, the Velop can't even keep *two* Netflix streams going smoothly. Technical Analysis: The Velop raises at great many questions. While using a wired backhaul is discussed in some of the reviews I've read, there are no instructions or indications in any of the documentation provided with the router that this can be done, or how to do it. There are no instructions or indications of how to integrate wired devices with the Velop's network - in my case, I have about a dozen wired devices (game consoles, desktop computers, etc.) that I had no way to connect. There's no indication of being able to switch the Velop into "access point" mode, where they integrate with an existing wired network; the Velop always seems to NAT and run its own DHCP server, etc. so any wireless devices will be on a different subnet from your wired network. (This may be part of the problem with performance, but there are almost no tweakable settings on the Velop to turn this off.) There's no way to deactivate the 2.4GHz network - my house is in a very congested area in 2.4GHz and I'd prefer not to use it at all; if it's available devices will occasionally "wander" onto 2.4GHz and then suffer atrocious performance. Other concerns: Finally, my biggest concern is with using the Linksys app + mandatory use of an online service for configuration. First of all, what happens when Linksys decides that it no longer "supports" the Velop - in two, three, five years? That's right, there will be no way to configure your fancy mesh network access points, because they've taken the online service down. (In fact, it's unclear whether the Velop will even *work* if the Linksys online service is unavailable.) What happens if Linksys gets hacked? Now someone will be able to download new firmware or settings to your Velop without your knowledge...firmware that could spy on you, or turn your Velop into a distributed denial-of-service device for criminals.

Very promising
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First I run a home based technical business. I've got a 150mb internet link from Cox. I had been using the Nighthawk X6 R8000, a most excellent router. I was hoping the linksys Velop would improve my household coverage and speed, as well as offer the same features I need/use on my existing router. I started by downloading the iOS Velop app, to do the installation; This and the complementary Android app are the only mechanisms available to set up the Velop Network (no web interface available). Seemed simple enough, I consider myself to be somewhat of a networking expert., I was sure their app would guide me through the process easily. Well I got the first node to talk to the app, to see my router and then promptly hang over and over when doing the "magic" network setup..... I called a help line and eventually talked a Velop networking expert.. I explained my situation and he suggested I tell my phone to "forget" the connections to to all of my existing home network connections (6, but I won't get in to why that is). Once this was done I was able to get first Velop node, connected to my cable modem, and to get it's wi-fi network up and operational (yea). The Velop tech help me get the other two nodes set up (each 60+ feet from the primary node and about that far from each other. Note, each Velop node has 2 Ethernet connections, which can allow the nodes to either communicate to each other via wi-fi meshing or via wired ethernet (obviously potentially faster). As I have wired ethernet connectivity through most of my house this sounded like a great Idea. I then set up the third node, where I ran across a bit of an issue, where I wanted to install it I had a powers strip with one available outlet, but the power brick on the Velop nodes are like 2.25"x2.25", it would not fit, no Idea why the "Velop wall wart" is so large, it's quite light and only supplies 2A output. I'm pointing this out as this is a potential stumbling block to any installer. I then told the Velop Tech that I wanted to set the network devices to live below #.#.#.100 on my network, as I had all wired hardware there and all DNS assigned addresses above .100; a long pause; this might not currently be possible, I was told. He help me change the IP address of the primary node, so that it would not conflict with my Nighthawk router; this was done through a currently, non-documented web interface to the primary node. when we tried to do the same to the secondary nodes the page that made this possible on the primary node did not exist to the secondary nodes. Oh well this was not a show stopper, after configuring the DNS address range I could work around this. I then asked about port forwarding, again on a non-documented web interface, I found what was needed, but my current set up required I forward about 32 ports (VNC & RDP access for my business); I was told I could only forward 16 ports (currently) - this was a show stopper, without creating new security concerns. Well at that point I decided to test the wi-fi throughput (btw: currently all Velop nodes/networks are required to used the same SSID; (it looks like this could be changed in the future from the hidden web interface - but it was recommended I not do so, at it was not "supported" (the whole web interface is not supported). Well on my Nighthawk network I ran speedtest on it's AC network and achieved 92mbps, on the Velop network from the same positions (distance) i achieved 95mbps. I tried the test more than once and it was consistently faster when I was closest to the primary node; when I moved to the hardwired second node, my results were the same 95mbps, when I moved to the third node, which could only communicate to the primary node via wi-fi, at a distance of 60'ish feet my speed dropped to about 20mbps, yet I showed a 5 bar connections to that node (not all that surprising). I asked the tech if there were any tools to determine the throughput from node to node or signal strength from node to node -NO not currently. I found this to be most dissapointing, as I thought the Velop network was supposed to help you choose the best locations for the nodes within your home...well not yet, but it's apparently planned. Well, the speeds achieved are as fast as I'd expect for AC networking today. The tools to set the system up are not yet complete, and the capabilities, compared to a high end router, are not yet fulfilled, and lacking in several areas. As this is nearly a $500 system, I think Linksys needs to offer all of the capabilities that they offer (and expose) on their high end routers (like their WRT3200ACM which is comparable to my Nighthawk). Maybe Linksys can find a happy medium between their app based setup and what an expert needs, and the tools to get the system optimized, but until they do the Velop network, in my opinion is not ready.
No, I would not recommend this to a friendBrand response from Linksys Staff
