This logitech Harmony universal remote is super east to use. I have only one remote to use TV, DVD, Bose amp, and DVR. LOVE IT !! I had Geek Squad come out and program it although if you are a techy you could probably do it yourself.

Great remote, but a bit fragile

This remote is great in so many ways. If you have a complex A/V setup and you want a remote that can pretty much run it all, this is a great choice. I recommend it highly, but don't expect the remote to last forever. First off, it is easy for a remote to be dropped or slide off the couch, etc., I've had several models of this remote over the years and after enough drops, the remotes will have power issues, so they reset on their own at times. This is not a deal breaker as you can cover the IR transmitter and pretend to turn everything back on, then you are back in business, but it is an annoyance. Also, over time, some buttons will stop working. My older version of this has a non-working 8 button. All my HD channels are in the 800s, so this is annoying. You can map a button you don't use to be an 8, which I did, and it will work, but another annoyance. So, great remote, but plan on replacing it every couple of years. Even so, at $50, it is worth it.

The most significant issue is getting the controller programmed through an app provided by Logitech. Once my wife’s son in law finally got it set up, it works pretty good. All devices can be controlled including the cable box, tv, sound bar and DVD player. If you don’t have someone very tech savvy to set it up, it is ridiculously expensive to have the geek squad do it for you—$145 I was quoted.

Programming the remote is relatively easy, using the Harmony desktop app on my computer. However, there are a few niggling issues: 1) The "watch TV" activity accurately turns on my Samsung TV and puts in on the input with my Roku. However, I have a Polk sound bar, and it invariably leaves that on the wrong input (not optical). I don't see a way to program that one separately from the TV input (HDMI). 2) Once you are in an activity like watch TV, the system doesn't allow for control of multiple components at once. In other words, if I want to turn up the volume, I need to go to the sound bar menu to do that, and then need to switch back to the Roku menu to change channels or fast forward through a movie. It is as if I don't have to fumble for different remotes any more, but I do have to bring up the right one on the menu each time I want to use that function.

Bottom line: Very good as long as you don't need it for non-IR devices Factoring in price, it's probably the best value among the Harmony line. It feels great in the hand and one-handed use is no problem. The screen is tiny and it's not touch-enabled like on the Elite but that's where some of the cost-saving comes from as it's literally a fraction of the Elite's price. It uses regular batteries so that should be factored into the overall TCO price but they last a while. At least a couple months of heavy use for me over a year plus of use. The functionality is good: plenty of programmable keys and it uses the same software as the top-of-the-line Elite which I only upgraded to because this remote is IR only and it doesn't work with the Fire TV Cube I recently purchased. If not for that, I'd be happily still using this one.

Excellent Remote IF You're Tech Savvy

This is an excellent remote that really can be your all-in-one. However, the programming for the remote can be a bit confusing and even using it can be complex. I would say the average person would have a hard time using it effectively especially if they have several different devices. But if you're somewhat tech savvy and/or have a lot of patience, it can become the one and only remote you'll ever need due to the large database of built in codes, ability to "teach" it any remote buttons/signals that aren't built in, and the ability to program it to record multiple items in one setting (play and pause can control your DVR, volume can control your receiver, input can control your TV all without switching to a different mode). I would recommend it but not for everyone.

This is my first universal remote. After getting an LG TV with the magic remote, I decided to try this for another TV. So far it is running a Spectrum cable box, an LG TV and Onkyo receiver. It does what it should. Though, it is time consuming and tedious to program. But once programmed, it does way more than expected. The learn commands by aiming another remote at it Feature is pretty cool and really works. The biggest negative is the software, which makes it impossible to add/remove commands in batches, especially for Onkyo receivers. The biggest plus is the “Volume Down 5” for Onkyo receivers. That feature is awesome for watching TV, because all you have to do is push one button to lower the volume when the loud commercials come on and one button when they’re over. All around a very good device, but it has its quirks and you have to really be willing to spend a lot of time programming and customizing it to get the most out of it.

I’ve had a couple of these remotes and they’re not bad. They aren’t over-the-top amazing either. Of course, for their price, they aren’t going to blow anyone away. I’ve had three of these, which you can probably guess that means that a couple of them have crapped out. The first one had an issue where the buttons around the display stopped working and the next one just stopped turning on one day. That being said, I still feel they are the best in the market in their price range. They are fairly easily programmable, and you can program some buttons to do things specific to your equipment also. So, even though a couple have stopped working, I’ll still keep buying them because there’s not really an equivalent in this price range and it’s way better than having a ton of individual remotes laying around.

    Harmony Remote

For the money it's a good home theater remote. I have purchased two of these to replace my two Universal Remotes which go for $300each and would be worth the money if you didn't have to pay someone from Best Buy $150 each time the remote loses its programming connection which happened to me at least 3 times. The problem with the Universal remotes is only Best Buy has the codes to unlock and enable reprogramming so the remotes end up costing much more than $300 over time. For that reason it makes more sense to pay $60 for the Harmony which may not be quite as good, but is much cheaper and has the ability to merge every component into one remote.

Smart TV, Smart Remote, Dumb user!

So I decided to leave my 60” Sony Bravia (several years old) at the house I sold in December and buy something new here in the new house. I decided on a Samsung QLED, somewhat smaller due to the wall size, and the Sonos Playbar/Subwoofer with a surround sound setup. It works great. However, the remote that comes with the TV does not control the volume of the Sonos speakers, so Best Buy recommended a Logitech universal remote. Well, I “programmed” it, I thought, successfully, but couldn’t get it to do anything. It wouldn’t turn on or off the TV or control volume or anything. So, I made arrangements to have my Geek Squad guy come and take a look at it and it turns out I missed the part where you have to peel off the label on the LCD display on the remote! Under that label was a menu waiting for me to say “YES! I would love it if you could take me through a tutorial on how to use the remote!” The guy felt badly for me and left without charging me for the visit! Gotta love Best Buy!

I like the fact I was able to consolidate remotes and set up activities however the consistency in various actions performed needs improvement. Specifically, sometimes the commands were not executed by the remote and there was inconsistencies when I tried to adjust the volume that would require me to select my reciever and adjust only to select the cable box to change the channel.

Great Upgrade from a Harmony 650

I have a Harmony 650 remote that this is replacing. Surprisingly, I have more than 8 devices in my Entertainment system and I'm grateful that the Harmony 665 is the same as the Harmony 650 but gives me support for up to 10 devices. There is nothing wrong with my Harmony 650, in fact it's a bit overkill for my basement TV and Blu Ray player. I really like the Harmony 650 and 665 line because they run on standard AA batteries. I don't like the idea of having a proprietary rechargeable battery. Eventually, the battery will wear out and then you spend a significant amount to replace it. Either Harmony 665 or 650 are great. Very easy to set up, they have IR receivers if you need to customize an undocumented command. And the Activity sequences are great (and wife friendly). Luckily, the 665 is nearly identical to the 650. Cosmetically, just a color change from silver to black. So transitioning between the two is effortless. (Very important when considering the Harmony 665 for my wife). Infrared performance is great. Infrared signal comes out the front, bottom and sides. I would easily recommend Harmony remotes over other universal remotes.

I bought this to replace a previous Harmony remote that wasn't working properly, possibly because it had been dropped a few times. The 665's strength is its ability to control multiple devices at once via sequences that you set up with Logitech's MyHarmony software, which accesses an online database of AV equipment. Basically, you specify the devices and functions that you want the remote to handle, and the commands are uploaded to the Harmony over a USB cable. Because it uses infrared signals to communicate, the remote won't work through AV furniture doors or around corners. Programming this remote was faster and easier than I recall for the previous version. It took me only a few minutes to program it to control a Sony TV and soundbar, DVR, and Apple TV. It's worked well so far, with the exception that I haven't been able to get it to switch the soundbar's output to Bluetooth. (To be fair, though, the soundbar's remote doesn't do this well, either.) I'm satisfied so far.

I really like these remotes, but I'm concerned about their longevity. I've owned the same TV for about 10 years, I'm on my 4th Harmony remote in that time. I have a 2nd Harmony remote that isn't used as often and it's lasted well over 5 years now. The convenience of being able to control all my devices (TV, Xbox, DVD, even a portable fan) has made up the $50 every 2-3 years. The software keeps track of everything, so when I need to replace the remote, I just plug the new one in and it asks if I want to copy an old remote to the new one. As mentioned above, they work pretty much everything, but I have encountered one item that they do not control: our PS4. It's a Sony thing - they won't allow any other devices to control the PS4. So, my remote controls the TV and goes to the correct HDMI input, but I still need my PS4 controller to turn on the PS4 & watch a movie.
