Logitech is definitely a leader in this niche market. I am a home theater enthusiast and have built multiple theaters. I finally decided on this Remote. I had been waiting long and deciding back and forth. If you don't want to pay for the higher end Harmony remotes, this is the best choice. This remote is simple and has limited function, but will take care of 90% of your needs. Anything else and you can use the App to take care of. The biggest con is the remote lacks a blacklight which is a huge downer-the buttons do not glow either. Yes there Is a learning curve to set up and it takes time, but it is highly customizable and videos online can help guide you. It will handle almost any device and you can customize each button if the full functionally is not already in place from Logitech (which is understandable considering the amount of devices out there) The app is great for controlling devices and will do everything the remote does and more. It also allows for setting up the hub if you don't want to connect to computer. By far it is best to set up using a computer. Do not buy a Harmony without the Hub or RF functionality. You will not be disappointed. Just take the time to learn to use it and set it up.

Great little remote... good for iphone users.

The remote itself is good... small and concise, with almost everything you need. However... for the amount of money that I spent... you'd think the thing would come with a backlight. but it doesn't. The smart interface is good, and it only took me 20-30 mins to get everything working perfectly. But what makes this model shine is the fact that it allows you to use your iphone/ipad to control the entertainment system... personally, I find it a bit gimmicky. I tried to use it a few times... but I ended up going back to the original remote. Honestly, Comcast's latest remote is better than this one. Great buy if you want a smart remote... but definitely not essential.

Great Remote, Solved Issues I had in Previous UR

Just want to premise this review with a caveat: though I had no trouble setting up this remote, I consider myself extremely savvy when it comes to setup. While this is the easiest experience I've had setting up a universal remote, I can see where it would be a problem for some folks. If you think you would have difficulty, Last time I checked, Geek Squad will come out to your house and do it for you for $150 or so. I'm upgrading from the Harmony 900. Probably most importantly, this system has nearly all of the same features for $200 less. I actually consider the features it lacks to be pluses. First, no touch screen. While this seems like a downgrade, I found the touchscreen to be a nuisance on the old remote because you could inadvertently switch activities when reaching for the remote. Also, the touch screen was the eventual demise of the remote. Secondly, the touchscreen necessitated a rechargeable battery in the 900 which is absent in the smart control. Again though, so far this has been a plus. The 900 had to charge every couple days, the battery had to be replaced every year or so (15 bucks on amazon), and the non touchscreen non rechargeable battery is purported to last months and the replacement batteries are less than a couple bucks. Now for the pluses over the 900. It works with the PS3 without any additional equipment. The iOS/Android apps are nice but unnecessary, though the favorite channel feature is really nice actually. There is little to no latency with any of my devices. I was blaming my DVR for the last two years for being difficult to fast forward when it looks like it was the 900 all along. And finally, the remote itself feels much sturdier, is much less clunky and should prove to be far more durable. As a whole, this should be a game changer for Harmony but it doesn't seem to be getting much press. The only reason I found out about it was because my 900 was getting to be on its last leg and I was looking to replace it. The price point is crazy low for such a powerful device and I really see no benefit to moving up to the Ultimate remote which includes a touch remote. I'd say if you can set up a router or printer yourself, you should have no problem setting this up. If you know you're the type that struggles with slightly complicated setups or don't know what a router is, hire a pro. Otherwise, don't complain when a device that has the potential to set up over a trillion AV configurations with activity based functionality is somewhat time consuming or challenging. And by the way, a trillion different configurations might actually be under-hyperbole. (300K different devices in the IR code library to the 8th power - do the math). One thing missing from this device which I actually think is unforgivable at this point - lack of homing/paging capability. Logitech actually had a press release/news article after a poll they conducted about where people lose their remote. This was to promote the sale of a unifying remote so people don't have to search for 5 remotes. Have they really not thought about adding this feature? Because I'd gladly pay for it.

Well at first I tried to set the hub up using my computer. I have a Windows 8.1 computer that I downloaded the software from Logitech.com. All went well until the software tried to update the hub with the newest firmware. It said that it would take 3-5 minutes to do this process. 15 minutes later my computer still is sitting there with a circle going around clockwise like it's trying to accomplish something. It did nothing. So, I got the manual and saw that I could do the same thing with my phone. So I downloaded the app for my iPhone and within 10 minutes I had it up and going, connected to my WiFi network at home, downloaded the firmware, transferred a previous remotes settings and had the hub working on three phones and the included Harmony remote. All in all, with the help of my iPhone it was easy to set up and it works!!!

    GREAT REMOTE FOR ADVANCED USERS

    Posted .

Logitech - Harmony Smart Control - Black MODEL: 915-000194 (after about 1 week of use) GREAT REMOTE FOR ADVANCED USERS Just like you should not complain that a stick shift (manual transmission) is harder to learn to drive than an automatic, reviews dinging this for the hard setup, should keep in mind what it is designed for. Once you master driving a manual transmission it is a much more enjoyable driving experience, in most, but not all cases. SUMMARY: If you are not an advanced user, very good at programming and logical thinking / planning, then maybe look at other models. It you want to have almost limitless control of every single button on the remote (up to 2 functions for 40 buttons), and have the patience to design a layout that is perfect for your use, then this gives you that capability. If I were designing an advanced entertainment device management system from scratch, this would be it. I have spent about 1 week programming this remote, and I think I am about 90% there towards having the perfect set up. I will probably never use the phone/tablet APP around which this system is designed, the thought of finding my phone, unlocking it, turning on Wifi, etc, seems too much work. The included “basic” remote is perfect for sending one button “launch” commands to the hub which blasts the actual button pushes to all the other devices. I only used the windows / online based configuration tool, which admittedly could be improved, but it still had 99% of the functionality I needed, it just could have been streamlined. Eg it would be nice to have a command “press right 9 times” instead of having to add 9 rows of commands one at time to “press right”. MY SETUP TV: SONY KDL55W900A DVR: TiVo Premier XL / Comcast Blu Ray: LG650 Audio: Yamaha HTR-5790 (older no HDMI inputs) GOAL: I finally mounted my TV on the wall, and I wanted to move the rack of devices away from the TV. So I moved all the gear to the other end of the room and mostly out of view. I needed a way to blast signals to all the devices, and I wanted a way to make a simple to use all in one remote for my family who hates to deal with 3 remotes in order to watch a move. I have all our movies and music stored on a media player (Synology), and we use Netflix, Amazon Instant, and Hulu Plus. It was very confusing for my family to stream a movie. Turn on TV Set input to Blu Ray, Turn on Blu Ray, Turn on Stereo Set Input to DVD, Set Audio to 7 Channel Stereo, Use Blu Ray remote to navigate to “home media button”, browse to the media player, navigate to the movie folder, etc etc etc etc. RESULT: There are 3 buttons on the remote that control up to 6 activities (scripts of button pushes). After my tweaking…… Button - Music (changes all the inputs as above and takes the user automatically to the media folder) Button - TV (changes the inputs and remote to watch TV from TiVo) Button - Movie (changes all the inputs to watch a Blu Ray) A long press vs. a short press, does all of the same, but includes the Stereo into the mix, since some people in the family prefer to listen to audio through the TV and others in surround sound. I also set up the color coded buttons on the remote as follows; RED = Netflix, YELLOW = Amazon, GREEN = Hulu, BLUE = Change input to the Wii. CONCLUSION: Yes, setup is complicated, and could use some improvement on the user interface. However, with patience and some planning you can get everything done. I would have liked one more row of buttons on the remote with miscellaneous names found on many devices “home”, “setup”, “input”, I’ve had to hide some of these functions as “long presses” on other buttons, but since I’m the only one that uses them it is fine. The remote control itself is slim, attractive and comfortable. It is not as intuitive as my TiVo remote, but it is close. I’ve also been using the TiVo remote for about 10 years, so there is muscle memory there. I’m about to pilot test this remote with the rest of the family now. Wish me luck !

This remote does what it's supposed to. Setup required a little patience, but I did not experience the problems some other reviewers have. I was able to import the settings from my old Harmony 650. The Smart Control operates all functions on all my devices. In particular, it controls my Apple TV perfectly, something the 650 would never do. The only minor issue I have is that it usually takes two attempts to connect my iPhone 6 app to the hub. Strangely, this issue does not occur with my iPad Air.

Just purchased this from Best Buy for a game room - TV, Receiver, U-verse, DVD, and Xbox setup - and spent about an hour getting it installed and configured. It dramatically surpassed my expectations on all fronts so far. My last experience with Harmony remote setup was a few years ago - I've generally gone to RF remotes from Universal that require professional installer support - and I was impressed with how things have improved. Device and Activity setup was extremely efficient and accurate, and no custom editing of macros was required on my part. I placed the Harmony hub in an open-faced cabinet with shelves between devices and the TV on top of the cabinet, and I have no idea how the IR signal is able to reach all those devices. I strung the separate supplemental IR flasher to the TV, but I'm not even sure it was necessary. Everything just seems to automagically work, which is what we all love products to do. All devices are consistently controlled as expected, the IOS app is fantastic, and I really like the hard button remote that is included as well. And zero cases so far of devices getting out of sync - i.e., when the remote becomes confused about what is actually "on" or "off." I'm sure I'll hit a kink or two with more use, but the early experience was amazingly good. I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but was so pleasantly surprised by this product I wanted to pass the word on. Connections between controllers and the hub are via WiFi, so make sure you have a reliable signal wherever the setup will be.
